We came here 3 1/2 years ago and this experience was way better than the last time! Apparently it's new owners! Well done!!! I do highly recommend this place, but why 4 stars? Let me break it down! Alcapurrias- A+ - taste very authentic Carne Frita with Fries- A Chicharron de Pollo- A+ Mofongo with Garlic Shrimp- A+ scrumptious Arroz con Gandules- A++ tasted like I was on the Island of P.R. Pernil - A+ DELICIOUS PASTELES- A- needs more meat but great flavor Chuleta Kan Kan- B (needs to be marinated more or more salt !)the chiccaron part was difficult to eat. I brought him home because anyone that can eat it all the way through must have the stomach of 5 men. Flan- A++ Tembleque- B- not bad needs more sugar Passion Fruit drink- A+ Coffee- B- The waiter was very good- although for a party of 6, it clearly says on the menu that an 18% tip would be included. So when the waiter approached us to charge our card- I asked again to double check the bill. His response was more like he ignored the question and basically said there are options for me to choose from which included if I wanted to give an additional tip. I found that to be SUS! but that's not a deal breaker. He was a great waiter but I just don't appreciate anyone trying to hussle me.

I went to this restaurant and wow! A hidden gem in Jacksonville. This restaurant transports your back home to Puerto Rico and the service is beyond amazing. You feel right at home. The portions, flavors, and different options on the menu give you a wide variety of Puerto Rican authentic dishes. The chef is a rockstar and you can tell his passion by the food and presentation. This is a must go to for the locals and a great tourist spot. This restaurant is absolutely 5 stars and deserves a couple of Michelin stars! My experience on Friday evening was magical and it gave me an opportunity to feel like I was back at home. If you get the chance, meet the chef. He is absolutely incredible and an amazing soul! Glad talented Puerto Ricans are sharing their gift with the world and his food is beyond everything you could eat! Amazing prices and the hospitality is top rated! I will drive all the way down from DC again to eat here!

Disappointed! Looking for a nearby restaurant to satisfy my craving for Bacalaitos (cod fritters), I decided to visit El Pegao. With much anticipation I placed an order for Bacalaitos. I was excited because I hadn’t had them in many years and remembered them being crispy and full of bits of cod fish. When I opened my order, immediately I was confused. They looked nothing like I was used too from where I’m from (NY). I took my first bit, and it was very salty with no bits of any type of fish, just flour and seasoning. I was disappointed! I was charged $6.40 with an addition of $0.26 for “Non-Cash Adjustment”, totaling $6.66. Please look out for being charged using credit cards with this restaurant, this extra charge should have been added. I make my own Bacalaitos at home and have also made them with Goya for a quick fix, this is how I know how El Pegao makes theirs. If I knew that I was paying for a box of Goya flavored flour with at least bits of cod fish, I would’ve gone to Publix and pick up a box of Goya Bacalaitos and make it myself. My recommendation is, don’t bother ordering Bacalaitos at El Pegao. ¡Desilusionado!

Wanted to eat some puertorrican food and decided to try this restaurant. When we got there the server was very prompt to let us know that it was under new management. I have no clue how it was before because it was my very first time. Wow...what a disappointment! I ordered the whole fish (red snapper) that comes with plantains and salad. My husband ordered the trifongo with shrimp. Although we were seated as soon as we walked in we had to wait and wait and wait and wait some more for the food to arrive. I've never waited so long at a restaurant for my food.

You would think they will bring a nice size fish for the price which was $34.99 and that it'll justify the long wait but when the waiter finally brings the food I had to laugh. This thing they gave me was barely 6 inches long and about 2 inches wide...you call that a red snapper??? You charge $35 bucks for that? Dried fish with no onions on the side, no sauce of any kind, nothing. I told her I didn't feel that was a $35 dollar dish not by any stretch of the imagination. She ended up giving us 15% discount. I wish I had the picture to show you. My husband's food was just OK, nothing memorable. The family that was next to us also complained that her food was bland and tasteless. The waitress apologized and told her that the chef is the owner...I'm sorry but there is nothing authentic about this place and the chef really need some serious cooking lessons!

Needless to say we will NOT be returning. I don't know how long they've been open under new management but my guess is it won't be for very long, not with that food and definitely not with...

Beyond dissatisfied went with my family to celebrate my birthday the atmosphere and service was amazing. Also loved the mango margarita and the piña coloda but the food was horrible had no taste and the portion that was giving was not worth it for $16.95 our mofongo was extremely small it was basically half of a regular size mofongo and the chicharrones look like pieces of scraps of chicken. It was bland and tasteless doesn’t seem authentic at all because us Puerto Ricans are known for our sazon & flavor. The pieces was extremely small did not look like chicharrones they didnt even put salad on our plate it definitely wasn’t worth the price. One of my sisters had carne frita and it waa bite size with 5 pieces of tostones barely any salad and a thin slice of tomato and her plate was $17.95. The alcapurrias had no meat inside. I was extremely disappointed our bill was $160 which doesn’t include my sisters bill and it wasn’t worth it at all. Honestly the only thing worth it was the tip charged for the waitress she was beyond amazing. The pictures that are posted on their Facebook & website is misleading I honestly wish i took pictures of our plates but I was extremely upset. Would not be returning nor would recommend this place. I'm sorry but there is nothing authentic...
