My husband has been on the hunt for spatzle for as long as we've been together, and we finally found an authentic German restaurant that has it! Very cozy interior with countless steins and Deutschland memorabilia, like a glimpse into your German grandparents' curio cabinets.
We were seated in less than 2 minutes, and our order was taken quickly by a lovely blonde waitress in a white and pastel pink dirndl dress. We ordered 2 hot tea, Bavarian cheese dip, 2 gulasch (1 with spatzle and side of cucumber salad, 1 with potato dumpling & mashed potato), then dessert (1 chocolate mousse & 1 black forest chocolate cake). Our appetizer was ready in about 7 minutes, which was expected since it was slightly busy with about 9 out of approximately 12 tables occupied with customers.
The live German music from Frank (Fred?), looking dashing in his lederhosen and alpine hat, was a great addition to the ambiance of the place and helped the time pass while waiting for early dinner. Even if it seemed like a small space, there was still enough room to have a private conversation with the live music. I could talk with my husband and still enjoy the singing in the background.
While waiting for the food, I went to use the ladies' room. It was single-occupancy, so I waited for a few minutes. The restroom was clean and well-stocked. My husband said the men's room was clean as well.
Back to the food, the appetizer of Bavarian cheese dip arrived about 7 minutes after ordering, and the pretzels were excellent. The dough was soft and fluffy enough to satisfy that hot pretzel craving. The cheese dip had fried onion or potato pieces, and it was excellent, not overwhelming at all. We each finished 1 pretzel in about 5 minutes!
The entrée of gulasches arrived 15 minutes after the appetizer. We did not know gulasch came with a pad of sour cream, and my husband gave me his since he isn't fond of that, but otherwise, it was delicious! The meat was soft, the potatoes were tasty, and the soup itself was filling. My husband enjoyed his gulasch with spatzle, and I liked how my potato du9mpling turned out.
We saved room for dessert, so we shared the chocolate mousse and black forest chocolate cake. Both were very good. I was expecting more chocolate than whipped cream - now I know to ask for no cream next time. During dessert, we even met Heidi, the owner, who warmly greeted us like we were long-time customers (this is our first visit 😀) which was nice.
Overall, the total order was about $108, excluding generous cash tip. We had a good foodie experience and might return when we're in...
Read moreWe had reservations for a party of six for 6:30 on a Tuesday evening. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were told we'd have to wait, "a few minutes." Twenty-five minutes later we were finally seated. Unsatisfactory! There are reasons people make reservations! Our waiter had the personality of a caterpillar, which ironically matched the speed of his service. After seating us he came around in a few minutes and took our drink order. After delivering the drinks and taking our entrée orders, we realized that everyone seemed to be getting bread except us so after we sat there for 20 minutes waiting for our meal, I finally asked the other waiter if we could get some. Our waiter was busy taking care of other tables, but not us. We got some rolls from the other waiter. When the waiter brought out our food we asked for more rolls and he said no problem. We didn't see him again until we received our check. To be fair, when we received our orders my Jager Schnitzel was very good. However, my wife ordered the Beef Rouladen and it was terrible. She said It tasted like a dry piece of rolled meat. It didn't have the usual Rouladen taste of pickles, mustard and onions that good Beef Rouladen is known for. Being big fans of German food, as both my wife and I spent years in Germany, we were both hugely disappointed in the service and her entrée. Customer service can make or break a restaurant's reputation and have a huge impact on the customer's experience. The fact that my entrée was good was a positive, but the fact that the service wasn't just sub-standard but non-existent were turnoffs. Put that together with my wife's dismal meal and our whole party decided that we would seek out a German restaurant that is far more customer friendly...
Read moreVery friendly staff and decent German atmosphere, but the food is not very good and really overpriced. Beware - the prices on the menu do not match the price on the bill. I will not be coming back here again.
We had just some classic German dishes and were disappointed with all of them - the only good part was the bottled German beer.
When we were seated the Waitress said she would warm up the bread which I was all excited about but what came out was a single slice of rye toast, toasted well done into a crouton! Not what I expected in any restaurant, especially German!.
Potato dumpling was bizarre, light but no potato flavor or much other flavor either. The red cabbage was so horribly sweet I couldn't eat it - just sugar. The Wiener schnitzel was NOT hand breaded and pan fried as stated in the menu but deep fried frozen cutlet with as much breading as veal. The jaeger sauce was okay but nothing special. This was listed as $27.95 on the menu but we were charged $28.75 - waitress never said anything about prices being higher. The dessert and chicken was also higher.
The chicken paprika was made with small pieces of overcooked chicken breast in a light sauce and Spätzle. Not bad but I've had real chicken Paprikasch in Hungarian restaurants and this is not it, and at $22.75 (menu was lower price), way too expensive for a few small pieces of dry chicken.
The strudel was just plain awful. It had no flavor and as bland an apple dish I have ever had with dry, tasteless, and mushy pastry for a whopping $11.50. (Menu said $11). The only good part was that the ice cream and whipped cream were good.
I suggest you keep looking for...
