UPDATE 1/15/23 (4.5 🌟): So the second visit happened sooner than expected as my wife wanted to try their soup on a chilly day. The second experience was better and this place was busy. I tried their Seafood soup while my wife tried the "Menudo", which is a Mexican style beef tripe soup. We had a soup brought to us by mistake (Mondongo - beef tripe soup with coconut milk) and it was good so we decided to take it home. Now, while the Mondongo was alittle different than what I'm used to making, the coconut milk gave it a nice twist from the traditional - it was really good. We also ordered the Steak Ranchero for the kids, which was cooked in a tomato sauce and was good as well. The refried beans were overcooked (almost burnt), which was replaced and was much better. Let me start by saying the Seafood soup was one of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. It was cooked with root vegetables such as yuca, yautia (taro root) and sweet plantains, and a whole blue crab in it. It was definitely 5 🌟. My wife really enjoyed the "Menudo", another 5 🌟. This experience was better and warrants 5 star review, which brings the overall visits average to 4.5 🌟. I would recommend this place for a no frills, good food dining experience. Predominantly Spanish speaking but don't let that deter you if you want to experience the multicultural (Spanish) environment - they DO speak English. Their menu covers different Latin cultures, which makes it quite unique. Our server was great and manager came by to make sure everything was OK. Buen Provecho!
There's movement here while not many seats were occupied, there were alot of carryout orders. The place could use better lighting since it felt dark. Tania our server (which we thought at first) was very nice; until someone else took our order. Starting off with the drinks, I did say no ice in mine, but the other server brought it with ice. I politely said I didn't want ice on mine which she replied the other "server" didn't tell her. So after trying to convince me the drink will be warm, I told her it was fine because I was feeling cold (I was just getting over being sick so my body temp wasn't 100% normal). Anyway, she threw the beverage tray on the other table so I said, I'm going to check her when she gets back. She came back and I asked if she was bothered by my no ice request because she threw the tray, which she laughed and responded no. Ok - so I eased whatever was starting to brew because she was nicer after that. Off to the food, it's got flavor. I ordered the pupusas with shrimp, and although it was cut up very small, they couldn't fool me on how they put very little. My wife liked her Honduran dish which had fried chicken, cut up fried green bananas with salad and other stuff. I'll come back and try something else but the 4 🌟 is alittle reaching for me - I'd say 3.8 to 3.9. But Tania (first server) was really nice, which warrants...
Read moreThe food here is always good... But I went in today and got disturbing sticker shock on our bill. Party of 2, each ordering 3 pupusas with a side of rice and beans. The 3 pupusas were $9.50 and $9.75 respectively. Each side of rice and beans was $7.00!! YES $7! EACH!! I could have ordered a whole kids meal, 2 beers, 3 sodas, or 3 tacos off their menu for comparably the same price as the 4 oz. of rice and 4oz. of beans respectively. My total check for 2 people was $46.06. The beans were literally in a 4 oz. disposable ramekin. Was good, but c'mon man. Raise the cost of the pupusas and other items that can be justified for the price increases. There is definitely not a shortage of rice and beans and it will never be justified to sell 4 oz. of rice or beans for $3.50. Simple food costing at publix pricing for the most expensive refried beans cost $.12/oz. Multiplied by 4 oz. equals $.48/serving of beans cost. Let's even say we double that and make it their cost, so $.96 a serving. At 3.50 that would be 27% cost which is an acceptable cost. But there is no way on God's green Earth that a restaurant can't make 4 oz. of refried beans for less than $.50 cost. I called Cantina Laredo, the most expensive Hispanic restaurant in the area, and their side of rice and beans was $5.52 with tax. The $7 was before tax.So $3 difference. The food is great, I won't deny it, but little things like that deter people that look at...
