While waiting for our flight at the Fort Lauderdale airport, we took a stroll to see what dining options were available. We ended up choosing Torn Basil, which had an Italian twist—pizza, meatballs, and a few other classics. It’s seat-yourself style, and one of the servers was already wiping down a table as we walked in. She handed us menus and we quickly figured out our drinks—Wifey went with a lemonade, and I ordered a Pernicious IPA from Wicked Weed. Their beer list had a nice mix of usual suspects and some decent craft picks. For food, Wifey  ordered the Grandma pizza and I went with the Italian-style wings, which our server mentioned had a dry rub. Drinks arrived fast, and not long after, our food hit the table. I had stepped away to use the restroom, and by the time I got back, everything was already set. My plate came with about eight wings—perfect portion, full of flavor. The pizza looked great too, and she was happy with her choice. Overall, everything hit the spot.  If you're looking for a quick, quality bite while passing through the airport, Torn Basil is definitely worth a stop. I even grabbed another Pernicious while we hung out at the gate before boarding.

Fort Lauderdale airport. In spite of having a sign at the front that says wait to be seated, I ultimately had to have a seat at the bar. No one came to the front to seat me and another customer. I placed my order at the bar, Classic Cheese and regular coke. The lady next to me ordered a pepperoni pizza (both were personal pan pizzas). Although I ordered first, she received her pizza before I received mine. I inquired about the pizza and the female bartender seemed slightly annoyed by me asking about the pizza. Another couple comes in and sit right beside me and ordered a sandwich and pepperoni pizza. You guessed it….they received their order before I received my CHEESE pizza. How long does it take to make a cheese pizza??? Finally, the pizza arrived, oddly shaped and not hot. (See attached picture). I would certainly hate to think that I received poor service, and poor quality pizza in FLORIDA based on my race, African-American. I definitely will not patronize this establishment again. I gave it two stars because the coke was good. The restaurant is next to Terminal D1. Tip….one penny and they really didn’t earn that.

Horrible customer service—don’t let them bully you! My flight was delayed, and I received meal vouchers. With limited food options at Gate D, I decided to try Torn Basil. The Alfredo pasta was good, and despite the wait to be seated, everything seemed fine until I asked to use my meal voucher. The waiter got annoyed and claimed they needed paper vouchers, sending me to wonder around the terminal trying to figure out what to do. After confirming via the email from my airline that I just needed to show my boarding pass, I returned to the restaurant, but the waiter rudely refused again. I had to involve the manager, who instantly accepted the voucher. There was zero accountability, no apology… even the manager made it seem like I was the problem. I also had to insist they remove the 18% gratuity that was added to my bill. This was an unnecessarily frustrating experience—poor service like this is unacceptable. My vouchers was $30USD for 2 people, my bill was $46USD. I paid the remaining without the gratuity and walked out.

DO NOT EAT AT THIS RACIST ESTABLISHMENT. My relative and I sat at the bar to have a drink before our flight. We waited 15 minutes for a bartender to serve us and the restaurant was EMPTY. When the bartender, Jennifer, finally arrived, she had an immediate attitude. She did not greet us and demanded we present our IDs. We ignored her rude demeanor then proceeded to show her our identification. After she took approximately 60 seconds to read my date of birth, my relative handed her ID to Jennifer. As soon as my relative pulled her ID out of her purse, Jennifer exclaimed that she couldn’t serve us bc of her paper ID. We have traveled from Atlanta (where we drank at the bar in the airport) and been in Miami for five days without any issue and being served alcohol our entire trip. Jennifer stated it was AGAINST THE LAW for her to serve my relative alcohol bc it was a paper ID (although it had the state seal and barcode on it). We looked up the law in Florida and we had let Jennifer know that this in fact was not a law and paper IDs are completely acceptable as form of identification specifically for travel and being served alcohol. Jennifer still refused to serve us and exclaimed that she’s been bartending for 40 years and she “knows the law”. We asked to speak with the manager. Jennifer walked us to the manager who was across the airport, and informed us that it’s not the law, however, it’s against their restaurant’s policy to accept a paper ID. Jennifer proceeded to yell at us saying she knew the law then stated, “She’s JUST a manager and doesn’t know what she’s talking about.” We left the issue alone and thanked the manager for the proper information. We went to another bar in the airport since this was their policy at their restaurant. However, the manager went to the other bartenders and told them not to serve us and to adopt their restaurant’s “no paper ID policy”. I have never been so racially profiled in my life and will NOT be giving Torn Basil my business and do not suggest...

My husband and I were seated at the bar of this restaurant on 2/27/23. There was a Caucasian gentleman who was seated at the same time as my husband and I. The gentleman next to us received a menu promptly upon being seated, received food and a drink before Michelle even acknowledged that we were there. There was also a Caucasian woman who was seated about 5-10 minutes after we were seated and she received a menu and prompt service as well from Michelle. About 5 minutes after Michelle gave the gentleman next to us his food she then asked if we had been helped and when we said we hadn’t she finally gave us a menu. After receiving a menu we did not receive any further assistance. My husband and I decided to leave after being at this bad for about 45 minutes without water or anyone taking our order. I have never received such poor service. The bar was not busy and as I stated the Caucasian gentleman and woman that were seated at the same time as us and after us were well tended to, he finished his food and drink before we decided to finally leave. I hate to say but it seemed as if we were invisible and I have never felt so uncomfortable and experienced such racism as an African American couple. When we finally decided to leave the woman who seated us asked why we were in the waiting area again and we explained to her what happened and she was able to bring us to the on site supervisor who offered us...

We ate there on our way home from a vacation . We had been waiting for our 6pm flight since 10am after getting off a cruise . There were several delayed flights due to weather . The airport was packed , no seating anywhere . We sat to eat at torn basil . Service & food was extremely slow , close to 2 hours to get a few pizzas & an order of nachos . By the time we were done eating , the restaurant had cleared out . we stayed seated there another hour or so . The waitress waiting on us left and we gave her tip to her . As we sat there , this other waitress was clearly annoyed we were still seated there but literally the restaurant was over half empty with no new customers waiting . We finally left because this new RUDE waitress was making it clear we had overstayed our welcome . As we got up to leave , this RUDE waitress exclaimed “thank you Jesus “ that we were leaving . We were polite and quiet as we sat there . We had already had a long day of delays and waiting many hours for our flight . We had waited excessively long for service And food up until that point . I was highly offended by the rudeness and lack of understanding of this employee . We were not occupying a space wanted by anyone else , we were doing no harm being there . Very turned off by this experience . Would rather starve...
