I left a five star review three years ago. We have been here or gotten takeout many times. The food has always been good, but the service has always been spotty at best. Not enough water, too long to bring the check, the orders are frequently wrong, honestly it's always something. It got to where if we ordered take out, we would always check the bags before leaving. Once we waited in the lobby while it took two more tries for them to give us the spaghetti and meatballs we'd ordered. The first time it was missing completely. The second time they brought an order of chicken piccata instead. When it finally came, it was spaghetti in one container, and the meatballs in another. Who knows why. But the quality of the food and the ambiance if you eat inside made it worth these minor inconveniences. Last week we went in for dinner with another couple, and oh boy. They have started a new system where they change up the main menu every week. There is a printed menu on the table with some staples, like pizza, salad, desserts and other things. But the mains are written on a chalk board and brought to the table, and the server... believe it or not... stands there holding the chalkboard and reads the menu to the table. It takes forever and adds nothing to the experience, and it includes having them push certain items whether or not anyone at the table has indicated any interest in that item. If they want to change the menu every week, fine, just print them on inexpensive paper and let us read them and decide. What's worse, there are no prices on the chalkboard. None. Everything is usually reasonably priced but there is no reason to exclude this information. Based on the server's recommendation, "My last guest said it was the best they'd ever had" my husband and our friend both ordered the ribeye, which turned out to be $53, a hefty price that might have changed their minds if they'd known. When the steaks arrived - huge steaks, which is great - they were drowning in peppercorns and a sauce that he didn't particularly like. The excess peppercorns alone ruined the steak, which was, to be fair, cooked perfectly. I ordered a Caesar salad, which I'd had there before, but they've changed the dressing. It did not taste good at all, it was way too lemony. A favorite of mine, the salmon Genovese, is now missing from the menu. I limit the amount of carbs I eat, and usually this wasn't a problem. For instance, I don't eat pasta, and now every dish has pasta, or is breaded. No fresh salmon, no unbreaded chicken. They were happy to exchange 'mixed veggies' for the pasta that was supposed to come with my dish, but the mixed veggies were a wet pile of sautéed onions, spinach and mushrooms. Yes, they are technically veggies (or rather two veggies and a fungi), but I was expecting, like, steamed broccoli/carrots/squash. Eating sautéed onions is not really the usual experience when you've been offered mixed veggies. The thing is, I couldn't ask for anything specific, because there were no other cooked vegetables anywhere on the menu or listed as being served with other dishes. One of our friends is a vegetarian, and there was almost nothing on the menu that would work. In the past they usually ordered the eggplant parmesan, which is not an option now. They did a special order of eggplant parm for her, which was very nice, but this new system is only a week old and the eggplant might have been left over in stock, who knows. Probably can't happen again unless there's eggplant on the menu already. The service was, as usual, not great. We waited way too long for the chalkboard menu to be read out loud to us, waited too long for our check, and kept running out of water. I am sharing this mostly in hopes that the management takes my commentary as constructive criticism. Give us paper menus, make sure the prices are included, add some vegetables, consider adding unbreaded meats, and train your servers better. The servers are very nice people, they are not the problem, they just need...
Read moreGreat spot for welcoming atmosphere, staff and very tasty food! We arrived and were greeted shortly after the host had sat the previous party. We were told it would be 10-15 minutes for a table so we sat at the bar. Very quickly we were informed that a table would be ready shortly and it was, not 5 minutes later! We sat and reviewed the short but variety filled menu, not many vegetarian options but I saw a risotto I wanted right away.
For the table (party of 4) we ordered the wood fired olives, calamari, and the meat and cheese board. Calamari came with two sauces, an aioli which was very nice and marinara also good. The meat and cheese board had a selection of three cheeses and four meats with an okay value for money charged. The wood fired olives were not our favorite, I can see that some may enjoy, but the process of heating the olives left them with an odd texture and the marinated flavor was a little lost on our serving. We might try again in case we got an off batch.
Our mains were the vegetarian risotto, spring bay scallops, and chicken piccata. Two of us also shared a Caesar salad. The vegetarian risotto came with a beautiful presentation and a rustic look, see picture for full effect. There was a variety of flavors that went really well together with different root vegetables being the stars of the dish and complemented by fresh tomatoes. Very flavorful dish with strong aromatics, so if you are looking for just rice, don't order this! It was truelly a unique and wonderfully thought out dish. The scallops were cooked beautifully, Gordon Ramsey from hellls kitchen would have approved! The polenta that the scallops came with was soft and creamy while still having a texture and was a great accompaniment. The pancetta was little under done, but that could be just the desired texture in the dish. I think a little crisper would have added a different texture to the dish. The chicken piccata and caeser were shared by two of and there was nothing left on either plate! We all tried the chicken piccata, it was breaded and cooked beautifully with the accompanying sauce rounding out the expected flavors. The Caesar lettuce was fresh and sauce was very nice.
We also had two different desserts, the tiramisu and cannolis. The cannolis were very crunch and had a good filling. The tiramisu appeared to have been made in restaurant but the lady fingers were nit evenly soaked with one over soaked and some under. Also the flavor they were soaked in didn't have that espresso taste we were expecting, wasn't sure what it was in the end. Good deserts but probably will try something else next time.
The staff was super friendly the entire night with our server being very attentive and polite, even with some of my odd questions. There was also a gentleman who came around and apologized for the olives since we did send them back. Excellent service overall!
Will be back for sure to try out some more of the dishes and are looking forward to the chicken...
Read moreThe staff was great once they noticed they had people at the front waiting to be seated. It was our first time there. We had a girls night so went on a Sunday to celebrate a birthday. First impression was the restaurant had a lot of plants. Nice atmosphere. Going around the plants we noticed a huge issue. The ceiling was leaking and buckets with mops were catching the water. After we were seated, we were wondering how long it'd been leaking because the ceiling looked like the woods was about to cave. It was bowing. We were told they were hoping it would hold. We asked what was being offered for happy hour. The Italian Margarita which is what I was planning, they were out of some ingredients for it so I ordered the Cold Brew Old Fashion. The Arkansas Bourbon was great in it. Birthday girl saw a wine that was offered but they were out of that so she wanted a tasting of a couple as well as our other friend that was with us. Interesting enough, the waiter brought out the tasing for all three of us on one stem each. Three wine tastings on one stem so we thought that was weird. Not that I didn't want to drink after my friend but three of us tasting from one stem on three different wines...nope. We ordered a bottle of the house red that tasted better with food then to just have a sit-down with and drink. Now for the food. Since the drink menu has some things unavailable I decided it was best to eliminate the offerings before we started which they did have a couple things they were out of. The food was pretty good. We had The Funk Pizza and our friend had the Salmon Genovese. She really liked it. The Salmon was nicely prepared. The pizza was a 14 in which we had leftovers. The truffle cream made this pizza. Personally if that wasn't on it I'd have to say it wasn't the best. Crust was good as well. If I go back I may try the Wise guy pizza. I think that was the name. It had meatballs on it. I asked for a sample meatball and they were good. Our server was very attentive and kind young man. I hope this place makes it, they people...
