Mugshots, thy name is mediocrity. Other than the personable, friendly server my party had, there was nothing remarkable about my first experience at this restaurant. And that's quite a feat considering the menu has some truly interesting burgers and sandwiches on it. If my initial expectation is any indication, this is going to be a good concept marred by bland execution.
At least the one thing Mugshots seems to take the most pride in, their sourdough bread, is a real winner. The buns are soft and pliable without being gummy, and more brioche like sweetness than tangy sourdough. Whether you're getting a burger, a chicken sandwich or something else, the bread won't let you down.
The hamburger meat, on the other hand, will absolutely let you down. It's not that it's bad per se, it's just... so average as to be unremarkable. Maybe they were counting on the toppings to punch up the wow factor but so far in my limited tasting they aren't anything special, either. The hickory smoked bacon is just fine, but it's skimpy in quantity and quality for what they charge. These various cheeses on the burgers I saw were tiny little sad bits of industrial quality faff.
Maybe in Podunk Mississippi (where I lived for a while, so I know) this would be a home run. But Foley has tons of great burger places, everything from the greasy diner burger at Fish River Grill to the high end fancy burger at places like Cosmo's in Orange Beach. You gotta bring your A-game to compete with burgers here; this is C-level at best. Average. Unremarkable.
I did at least try a non-burger sandwich and it was pretty good but again, unremarkable against stiff competition. The Buffalo-sauced Brisco Inferno geatured crispy fried chicken tenders that were fat and juicy, and a tangy but not at all hot "Buffalo Jack's Wang" sauce, which, phrasing, guy... Was it good? Yeah. Was it great? Nah. It was... Average. See a trend here?
Subsequent visits didn't really improve my opinion. Service continues to be decent and the food is just fine. Honestly at this point the only real highlight food-wise had been some of the appetizers like the southwest egg rolls and the cheese wedges.
Overall, it was fine. Just fine. Nothing special. It was neither oddly cheap or frustratingly too expensive. It was neither wonderfully delicious nor trash. It just was.
There are enough burger and sandwich types to at least encourage me to come back and try again, but if everything else is as so-so as what I've seen so far, it won't be a part of my family's...
Read moreCame in to celebrate my 40th birthday. We sat in the bar table area because I used to bartend and I always like to throw the bartender a couple of extra guests. My girlfriend used to work at Mugshots in college and met her core group of friends she's still close with there. Told the server/bartender it was my birthday. She carded me for the drink so she had the opportunity to verify this. I also mentioned I wanted a bit more pink in my burger, closer to medium or medium rare than the med-well they do by default. Burger came out well done. She never wished me a happy birthday which I guess is fine I just kind of always liked the positive friendly atmosphere at this location. Both the bartender and the person who ran my food looked absolutely miserable to be here. Is it really that hard to pretend like you don't hate your job? I saw them eating on the floor and looking at their cell phones, which is fine, except that neither of them ever did the basic two-bite check back where they ask how your food came out on either the appetizer or the burger. At the end of the meal I asked if they do anything for birthdays and she said they offer a free burger if you download the app and join some club. Like...I told you it was my birthday before I ordered a burger. You couldn't have told me then? $81 for two people after tip. They weren't even busy. She had a bar with five people at it and no other tables. What's up, Mugshots? This is the state of your training now? Aside from the over cooked burger the food was good but I don't see myself coming back to this one. Really disappointing...
Read moreFood is amazing. This is the 3rd time I have been here in the last 2 weeks. All 3 times I keep getting the same server Lane. Today I ordered fried mushrooms. After about 20 minutes our regular order came out and I mentioned to the server that they must have forgotten the appetizer. He apologize and said if they were already put in that I would not be charged for them. He comes back and tells me that they were not put in because they are out of mushrooms and did not tell him. After finishing my dinner I spoke to the manager and asked if they were out of mushrooms and of course they were not. The manager asked for me not to say anything because they were shorthanded. I was not asking for anything for free I simply don't appreciate being lied to. All he had to do was say he never put them in. The manager simply apologized and wanted me to handle the bill with her to not create a confrontation. I was not yelling and simply informed them I was going to make sure the server knew that we were aware that he lied to us. The server never apologized he just said okay have a blessed day. There's one thing to be shorthanded but to blatantly a lie to people because you're incapable of doing your job is unexcusable. The manager never offered any type of compensation or even provide us with what we originally requested. She was more worried about loosing employees. If the food wasn't amazing I would never return. I assure you I will never be sat...
