When out of town, I am a real pain and insist on dining only at places I cannot normally patronize (that means no chains EVER), and hopefully with a style of food not available in my hometown. Searching for a quick lunch in Fort Collins and seeing Australian food, I immediately set my heart on Waltzing Kangaroo ‘cause Australian food isn’t all that common!
The shopping center in which WK is located is kind of wonky, with one way entrances and exits, and limited parking. We ended up passing it, driving around the block, and almost missing it a second time. Whew! Just be on alert!
We entered to a bit of a line, but it moved so fast because everything is truly ready! It is all under heat lamps, but still fresh, and the longest part of the process was customers making their decision. I think, as of late, WK may have limited their selections a smidge, but we had about six or so choices of pies (they have standards and a monthly special), plus sausage rolls, and sides (mushy peas, mashed potatoes, gravy). There were also profiteroles, and a variety of coffee-based beverages, tea, hot chocolate, and soft drinks. Currently, no seating inside, but they did have a couple bistro tables out front.
The meat pies are lovely: buttery, flaky and so rich and filling! I could not finish my veg and cheese. On the other hand, my husband downed both the beef stroganoff and most of a sausage roll (with a loose ground sausage filling, not cased). We were on the go, and the pie is so solid it was surprisingly easy to eat in the car, though you will drop flakes of crust all over. #worthit
Now, Imma just be real with you. As good as the pies were (and they were really, really good), I could take ‘em or leave ‘em compared with the MUSHY PEAS! I had considered a double order, and then when I opened my box, found the serving so large I was glad I didn't go through with that…but then I munched them all up and would have easily consumed a lunch of peas alone! They are so creamy, not too smooth with a pleasing texture, and this sort of meaty/super savory flavor. I have tried to replicate them at home, but to no avail. Waltzing Kangaroo, if you are reading this, please share the recipe so I can go on living happily.
Fort Collins had many good-looking options, but I am so happy we went with Waltzing Kangaroo. If I have the chance, I will absolutely return. Oh! And they sell their wares frozen, and they can...
Read moreWe were looking for a new place to try for a weekend dinner and saw good reviews about The Waltzing Kangaroo, so decided to visit.
From checking out the menu on their website before visiting, we knew that most of their pies are meat based but were really happy to find that they have two vegetarian pies to choose from on the menu. When we visited they had lots of different varities of meat pies to choose from in the case but only 3 vegetarian pies total. Thankfully, they had the exact number we needed for our family! There were 2 pies with Veggies & White Cheese Sauce and 1 pie with Veggies in Thai Peanut Sauce.
We decided on the Tucker Box which comes with a pie and 2 sides. Hubby and I had the Veggie and Cheese ones with sides of mushy peas and mashed potatoes and our son had the Veggie and Thai Peanut Sauce one with a side salad and mashed sweet potatoes.
The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. Our meal was filling and tasted pretty good and had that homemade taste. We all thought our pies could have been elevated from "pretty good" status to delicioius by being spiffed up with some high flavor seasonings and spices or maybe just have some folks can add to their food if they so choose.
It was a little disappointing to get there mid-day and see everything but the vegetarian options readily available. We asked if they would be making more vegetarian ones for the case that day and were told that they would not. The entire time we were there, we were the only customers and two employees were busy prepping pies, so not sure why more vegetarian ones weren't being made. So, if you are vegetarian and plan to grab a pie, to avoid disappointment, I'd recommend calling ahead to make sure they have...
Read moreReally good small savory pies for a great price. If your looking for something filling, fast, and well priced, you can’t really go wrong. PS. Their profiterole is amazing.
Order: Lamb Rosemary Pie, Madras Chicken Curry Pie, Profiterole About: $22
Review: I have very limited experience with Australian food so I was excited to try something pretty new to my palate. The Waltzing Kangaroo is a fairly small store with only six or so seats inside and a handful outside. Their menu is almost exclusively savory pies with just a few desserts, one of which was a profiterole that was absolutely unbelievable. Maybe one of the best I’ve ever had.
We grabbed the lamb and rosemary, and madras chicken curry pies and both were delicious. The lamb and rosemary was definitely a darker more rich pie while the madras chicken was a lighter almost creamy pie. We really love both of them though.
Another really big advantage is that the food is incredibly quick. All the pies are premade so they just pull them as you order and hand them to you as you check out. It’s super fast to get a very filling meal and honestly it’s not very expensive. One other very cool thing that they do, if you are local to the area, is that they have a large selection of frozen pies that you could take home and reheat at a later time. If I lived anywhere near here I would absolutely keep several in my freezer for days I don’t feel like cooking.
We both really enjoyed the Walton Kangaroo and the only reason we won’t be back soon is because we live in Florida. For anyone nearby I’d highly...
