First of all, I'm not the kind of person that writes "reviews" on eateries. However, this time I felt I needed to let other (potential) diners of Hachi Sushi know what happened to me here and take mental notes of whether to go here or not.
Over the years, I would meet my relatives here for dinner (they go here a lot more often). I always felt this restaurant was decent. Not the best, but not the worse - just in the middle. (If you want the best quality fish/sushi that is Japanese-run (not Chinese-run like this place), go to Umeya in Cresskill, NJ.
Recently, I ordered takeout from Hachi Sushi - 3 "special" sushi rolls ($16 each) and fried oysters (total: $62). When I went to pick up my order, there were people of another ethnicity (I'm Asian) slowly walking out, chatting with the Chef and the woman employee behind the register/counter. The woman employee smiled, chatted with those customers and kept telling them to take as much candy in the candy bowl as they wanted - even showing them a huge-Costco-like bag of tootsie rolls - insinuating that they have so much candy there and saying again to them to take more of the candy. After these people left, the woman employee took my credit card for payment of my takeout order. Then I politely asked for "extra soy sauce [packets]". The woman then abruptly/rudely/with an attitude responded to me saying "I put 10 soy sauce packets in the [takeout] bag". I was shocked to hear this as when you ask for "extra" of something at an eatery, the usual response is "sure, no problem/yea...I'll get you extra, etc.". I then reiterated that I just wanted extra. Then the woman rudely and abruptly said "for 3 sushi rolls, 10 [packets of] soy sauce is enough". WOW...unbelievable. Then I said "my family comes to eat here all the time..." Then she said "Ok...I'll give it to you". Awkward silence then came about as she processed my credit card payment (not a pretty penny - $62!). I then wanted to diffuse it and said "it's Ok...you don't have to give it to me....I just wanted extra as I don't have any soy sauce in my home." Then I thought about it all afterwards and realized I don't have to justify why I want it. For all she knew, I could have used 7-10 soy sauce packets for only 1 sushi roll! The woman walked to the back and came back with 5 more soy sauce packets and put it my takeout bag.
To top it off - when I came home and opened my food order, we realized that the 3 "special" rolls we ordered were not the correct ones! They messed them all up! All 3 rolls had shrimp tempura in them when clearly we only ordered 1 roll to contain shrimp tempura. Another roll was supposed to have eel and other items in it, and they were nowhere to be found. WOW...extremely disappointing. The fried oysters were heavily battered - yuck.
The fish is ehhhh - run of the mill, looks fresh but tastes --- tasteless. Not good quality fish.
I will never order takeout, dine here on my own again. Never Ever! There are plenty of other Japanese/sushi eateries much better than this.
Plus, you want to deal with people that don't treat people "equally"? Be nice and offer tons of (as much as they want) candies to one, but act rude/mean and make a huge rude fuss of not wanting to give extra soy sauce to another? Really??? Unacceptable.
The owner/Chef looks like a very nice man. I hope he can train his staff to be nice, courteous - very least - treat people of all ethnicities the same -- with KINDNESS. Don't single out certain ones and only be nice to them and not others.
Hope this helps one decide...
Read moreThis was a hidden gem! The staff were excellent and the food is in my top 2 sushi places ever!!! The knifework from the sushi chefs were teeming with so much precision, and I can just tell they're highly qualified. It's a shame I didn't but a raw option because I honestly believe they would've done it in front of me! The actual customer service made me feel as if I were royalty. They were so sweet and kind, and the atmosphere was incredible.
Now, onto the food, I bought a shrimp tempura roll and miso soup. The shrimp tempura rolls were the best tempura rolls I've EVER had. The deep umami was perfect, and when I accented it with the spicy mayo sauce, it had an EXPLOSION of flavor in my mouth from the savory flavor to the rich umami. The roe eggs were also a pleasant surprise to come across when I opened the bag, and when I tell you that the sushi had EXCELLENT picked garlic, I tell you, even the condiments were made well.
Finally, we have the miso soup. While I LOVE miso soup, I never end up finishing the soup until the next day, but this time, it was so good I did!!! The delicious flavor of the broth was VERY well crafted, while the seaweed and other condiments on the miso soup was delicious, the food was an incredible experience.
Finally, we have the actual atmosphere. It was a very quiet, calm, serene place, definitely a hidden gem. I was surprised to not see anyone else, but nevertheless, it was one of the most cleanest restaurants I've ever seen. If I could go back to the place again, I absolutely would. This is a gem I did not...
Read moreThis establishment immediately sets a high standard, beginning with its inviting and genuinely warm atmosphere. From the moment of arrival, the environment suggests a return visit is inevitable. The meal began with the miso soup, which was a testament to the kitchen's commitment to fundamentals—a perfectly balanced, comforting start that executed exactly what it promised. The subsequent sushi course maintained this level of quality. The volcano roll was a highlight, demonstrating a masterful technique. Its crispy ratio was complementary and precise, providing a delightful textural contrast without overwhelming the fresh ingredients. Following this, the black dragon roll, an established classic, was expertly prepared and did not disappoint, cementing its status as an all-time favorite. While the culinary and environmental elements were superb, a minor adjustment to the dining environment could enhance the overall experience. The current music volume is perhaps a touch too subdued. A slightly louder ambient track would be beneficial in masking surrounding conversations, allowing for a more intimate and focused dining experience. In summary, the food here is undeniably amazing, offering skillful execution of both classic and specialty rolls. This is a highly recommended destination, and I definitely...
