I came here weeks ago for my birthday lunch. I am just getting around to posting a review. I appreciate the story of the business. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. This is a restaurant so it's all about the food. My experience with the food was one of shock and utter disappointment. It actually left me speechless for 5 minutes then anger took over. Never in my life have I paid so much for 2 people to eat cafeteria style dining. My bill was $70. The only thing that tasted like anything was the yams. Something that cost less than a $1.50 to make. What made me feel completely scammed was the cook to order shrimp. I'm thinking it's going to be real shrimp. When I received the order it looked like grocery store Sea Pak frozen shrimp. I was waiting for cameras to come and say this was a joke. I paid cash for my ordered but I was charged a fee as if I used my credit card. So I suggest people look at their receipts. I only ate the yams and threw all the food away. The chicken I had was not fresh. The person I was with chicken was hot and fresh. The greens were horrible. I just sat in disbelief that I paid so much money for trash ready food. I could have gone to any fast food restaurant and got better food and saved $50 or more. This is a place for people who don't know what soul food taste like or people are familiar with country cooking . That was not soul food, because the soul was missing. I am still completely baffled. It was the worst food so...
Read moreI genuinely hate to leave this kind of review because my husband and I were really excited about this restaurant opening. We finally had a free day to check it out, but unfortunately, we left disappointed.
The first thing that surprised us was the portion sizes particularly for your choice of meat. It’s very small considering the price point. Most soul food spots offer generous, hearty servings at a much more reasonable price. It was also a bit jarring to see everything served on small, flimsy paper plates, which took away from the overall dining experience.
As for the food, it just didn’t live up to the expectations. The flavors lacked depth, didn’t taste particularly fresh, and it just doesn’t taste like authentic soul food. The collard greens had too much vinegar, the cabbage was overcooked, and the cornbread was hard. The food felt more like something you'd find in a cafeteria than at a soul food restaurant. The only standout for us were the green beans.
Both my husband and I were born and raised in the Deep South, so soul food is near and dear to us. Sadly, this meal didn’t hit the mark and we will not be returning. We truly hope the restaurant can grow from feedback like this and evolve into something great, because the community here in Indian Land truly...
Read moreOne of the worst meals my husband & I have ever had. We each got a small plate and had ribs, collard greens, black eyed peas & cornbread and smothered pork chop, mac & cheese, cucumbers & tomatoes & roll. Our bill was around $40 and yet we went through a cafeteria line, carried our own trays, ate off of Styrofoam plates with the flimsiest plastic flatware I've ever seen. There was no lemon or butter with the packages of condiments and we had to go back and ask for it as it was not offered. The rolls & cornbread were served cold. I won't even go into the individual dishes except to say it was bad. Both of us are from the deep south and have eaten (and cooked) this type of food our entire lives. We spoke with another couple in the restaurant who were from Atlanta and they also were not impressed. The sweet tea was very good but it was not freshly brewed. I knew that the food was overpriced but was hoping that the quality would match the cost - it did not! Usually we will give a restaurant a second chance but not this one - not when we could not recommend even one of the items. I predict it will not last long in...
