Pizza doesn't live up to the hype, and employees need to learn proper food-handling procedures: Wash those hands after touching money!
Comments in a Facebook post about the "best pizza" in Fort Wayne had good things to say about Oley's thick and thin crust pizza. They went so far as to suggest they were reminiscent of Chicago style deep dish and thin crust.
Nope. Not even close, in my opinion.
Oley's double crust was thick and cheesy, with little flavor in either the crust or sauce. It tasted a bit like butter on the bottom of the crust. I would much prefer olive oil with a dusting of cornmeal, but then I'm used to the likes of Lou Malnati's and Gino's.
The thin crust, called "single crust" at Oley's, was limp and flavorless. I ordered with pepperoni and banana peppers. The pepperoni was OK, but they were sure skimpy with the banana peppers. Perhaps they were running out, but they should not have charged me for them if they didn't have enough for the whole pizza.
The dough was soft, not crispy at all on the bottom. Sauce was skimpy and flavorless. The cheese was OK. The bottom of the crust was a bit soggy from the toppings. Pieces are cut into triangles, and they kind of fall apart if you try to eat it hand-held, instead with silverware.
Customer service was lacking each time I visited. When I ate there, the server kept staring at me. I mean like I was in a cage at the zoo - staring at me. It was quite uncomfortable and perplexing. I mean, I was wearing clothes and all ...
When I placed an order for carry out, I was disgusted to see the not-too-clean cashier go straight from handling my money back to the kitchen to handle food. If I hadn't just paid, I would have left right then. Other employees watched him do this, so apparently it's no big thing there. But - proper food handling requires employees to wash hands after handling money - before touching food. That was enough for me. Even if the pizza was good, I would not return.
I love trying mom 'n' pop places, but this one didn't make it for me. Sorry, I...
Read moreOk so I havent had Oleys in years and remembered it was really good back then. I went this weekend and really loved the pizza but the breadsticks were another story. They basically tasted like a 4 year old used play-doh to bake in an easy bake oven. Zero taste, zero flavor, zero anything. The cheese with it was really good so that made them bearable at least. Pizza was the best in town by far, plenty of toppings and tasted amazing. Best double crust pizza hands down. When I go back I will not be ordering the play-doh sticks. Great place and awesome food though. They should maybe revisit on the play-doh sticks and maybe do something new with them.
I went back this past weekend and enjoyed great food again but I asked the waitress if they could turn the IU Purdue basketball game on which was on Fox. Waitress came back and said the "boss" said she couldn't turn it. Maybe he is a Kentucky Fan?? Nobody else was watching the tv I might add. So while I was enjoying the great food I had to watch the Smithsonian channel about how lobsters are caught. It was awesome!! Maybe the "boss" wanted to know the secret to catching them? Anyways kind of funny how they couldn't change it to the biggest rivalry game in the state and it was a huge game. Not like I was asking them to turn on...
Read moreOne and done. Will never order from them again. Even ask the guy on phone to repeat what I ordered. Was completely wrong. Ask for meatball on pizza. He repeated that and it had sausage instead. Was told they don’t offer meatballs on pizza. Website says they do. Was told maybe other locations do but they only put meatballs on subs. So they had meatballs. Also could have just told me that. Told him it was very important no onions on salad. Had onions on salad Edit after owners reply. If you can’t handle a negative review do better.
