Matilda bakehouse — Restaurant in Fox Point

So in this crazy mixed up world I walk into Matilda and the world’s troubles melts away. I walk in and seeing the amazing bakery it’s like walking in for the first time again! When Monica sees me she knows to make my Late and Co-owner Julie always has a kind word for me. Being a regular is so nice and to be made to feel so comfortable and have that level of comfort from our local amazing bakery cafe is beyond a pleasure. I think I have had pretty much have had everything they make and what they make is all really first class product!

So I became a devoted groupie when they were still selling bakery at farmers markets. I was amazed how upscale the product was at a farmers market at the time since it was so unexpected! I have to say we are we so lucky to have them here in town. I could not believe our good luck when I heard they planned to open a brick and mortar shop in Fox Point still feels like a dream. We are so fortunate a year later and time flies when you are having great morning bakery! Every time I go in and think that we are so lucky to have such a wonderful bakery cafe in our community!

Editing review to give more details: We are in possession of documented, photographic evidence that the kitchen at Matilda operates under severely compromised sanitary conditions. Multiple rat infestations have been reported, with rodents caught in inhumane live traps—staff were instructed to conceal the traps with trash bags when rats were found dead, and to continue food preparation as normal. We have also documented the presence of cockroaches, extreme grease buildup, and hazardous working conditions.

Both dishwashing and handwashing sinks are frequently out of service due to ongoing sewage overflows, posing a direct threat to food safety and employee hygiene. Despite being fully aware of these conditions, the owner of Matilda failed to take corrective action and instead expected staff to continue operating in a clearly unsafe environment.

This level of negligence is not only unacceptable—it is dangerous. The documented disregard for basic health and safety protocols should be more than enough to warrant immediate inspection and potential closure of the establishment. Public health must come before profit.

I love everything about this place except for two things. But first, the pastries are amazing. The staff are kind and friendly. The store itself is spotless. I stop there in the morning on my way to work and relish the fact that I'm going to be enjoying bliss when I get there.

Now, here's the two things:

1. The coffee they serve tends to be very bitter and over extracted. The tannins are very front of mouth. I prefer a richer, darker coffee so your taste may vary.
2. The love of my life, their cinnamon knot, is very inconsistent. On some days it's baked to perfection, moist, almost a little gooey, with a soft pillowy crumb. Other times, it's overbaked with a dry crumb and dark outer crust. On days like this the glaze will not adhere to the knot and falls off in big chunks.
