I really wanted to rate this place fairly high but the food here was a bit imbalanced and Ill explain in a bit more detail. However, I did like the setup and its located in the historic area of Frankfort on the main food drag. Its picturesque and has a modern facade but the interior is darker and cross between farmhouse/diner/pub style.

Being that it was early dinner; there was an over-abundance of staff, possibly needed for an anticipated evening rush. Just odd they crowded the entrance/exit way. The service was fine but rather aloof. Nonetheless, it’s the food that I am here to try.

Started with the jambalaya. Now I am quite worldly and have travelled to 5 of the 7 continents and many places in the USA; and I know excellent jambalaya. This was better than average. There was really good heat, nice chunks of andouille sausage and surprisingly 4 nicely sized shrimp. Very tasty serving but needed a bit more rice cause there was very little, which made it a bit out of balance without carbs. Also, it was to be served with a side of bread which I never received.

I rarely overeat and portions are fairly large so I was pleased to see blacked sea scallops as an appetizer and it promised to be a good portion (its listed as U10). Of the 3 scallops, one was sorely too small. Visually, it should have been equal-sized, like the many places I have been to in many large cities from NYC to Miami; LA and back to Chicago. I am just saying that if you state a specific size of scallops, is it too much to have them all sized evenly. But the sear was excellent and the taste was wonderful on the larger scallops. It paired well with the lemon beurre blanc. The chimichurri was more of a paste and not the usual liquidy olive oil based sauce.

Overall, the...

I had always passed Smokey Barque in Frankfort but never went due to poor reviews. However, I found out that Trail's Edge Brewery had "taken" over so I gave the place a try under the assumption that the new branding would lead to a better experience. We arrived in the main doors and found three people standing at the hostess area. We stood there for about a minute before they even acknowledged us. I ended up asking for a table of two and one of them randomly disappeared looking for a table. We spent another five minutes standing around waiting for her to come back. She came back, didn't even acknowledge us, and proceeded to stand there staring into space. We weren't given a wait time or any information on whether a table was open or how long of a wait it would be. All three hostesses seemed to be overwhelmed and kept shuffling through menus and leaving in random directions. I have no idea where they were going with those menus since no one was following them. At this point, it had been ten minutes with little dialogue so we just looked at our phones looking for a backup plan. We eventually decided to leave knowing that if they can't get seating right, then there would be little hope for the actual dining service. On the way out, one of them claimed that they finally had a table for us but we were already soured on the experience.

TLDR: The Trails Edge is perfect name for this establishment. The staff wandered off trail and the experience declined faster than a hiker falling off a cliff.

I am giving this establishment 2 stars. One star would not be fair unless I had the...

Decided to throw my husband a surprise 50th and it turned out BETTER than I could have ever imagined!

The food, staff, atmosphere, service, environment, EVERYTHING about that night will resonate with us forever.

Our family/friends continued to mention throughout the night just how DELICIOUS/WONDERFUL the food was we chose to go with the recommendation of Jackie {banquet mgr} and she was SO right!!!

Jackie has a warm and approachable way about her and she knew exactly what I needed and what I DIDNT lol. She is as FRIENDLY, SPUNKY as her staff that CLEARLY adores her and watching them work TOGETHER as a team is something else.

We ended up having the chicken piccata, garlic mashed and vegetable medley and EVERYONE loved it! Our family and friends kept mentioning how the food was better than any banquet hall these days and wanted info. on having future parties/etc.

That little room nestled in the basement referred as the "boiler room" was just perfect for what we wanted to create which was a "personal space" for our family and friends of 60 to make memories that my husband will never forget.

The staff each and every last one of them continuously greets you, asks how things are coming along, if you need anything, our guests kept saying how INCREDIBLE and accommodating and sweet and fun and NICE they all were! Not only did I notice but about a dozen of our guests said the very same thing!

So if your looking for sweet little place with FANTASTIC food and service ---GIVE THEM A CALL!!!

Thank you Trails Edge for making his 50th...

First time here and the ambiance of the place is pretty nice, Edison bulbs everywhere. Pretty decent menu and very nice selection of bourbon and scotch. I got a Glenfiddich gran reserve 21, which was 37$ and it was pretty amazing (250$). It was nice to try and expensive bottle ahead of time vs buying it to try. For food we got the calamari fries deep fried. They were good but almost too much. I like the consistency of rings with various parts but these were decent. Not over cooked at or chewy. Tried the jambalaya which I thought was very tasty. It had a nice slow burn to it. Wife got the journey burger and she enjoyed it. I had the blackened mahi mahi with the pineapple lemon Blanc sauce. Mine was ok, I thought the fish was a bit overcooked and dry for my liking. We both got the sweet potato fries and we're happy to learn they kept smokey barks mallow sauce, so that was one of the favorite eats. Service was really good from our server who started right when they transitioned to trails edge. It was really neat to see the beer brewing tanks right in the middle of the restaurant, they weren't running at the time but I guess that would be cool to see. We also noticed a Frankfort lions guy trying to collect from patrons sitting on the patio. I guess for your everyday joe it might not be an issue, but for us who don't get away from the kids very often I would not be pleased with that while eating dinner. Thanks guys and good luck!

Update: 7/23 Prices are shooting up, price for a golden beet salad with chicken is $19. Everything is super expensive here now. Tried the pizza for the first time, I don’t recommend it. The Mac & cheese is good and the tortilla soup is very good. Stay away from the pizza. Great outdoor eating place otherwise!! Beautiful decor, good food, great drinks and brews, outdoor eating, love this place! The only reason for not giving 5 stars is because of inconsistent food quality. There are days you can go here and get a great dish and other times that same dish will taste completely different. This has happened on numerous occasions and not just to myself. There must be several different cooks doing things their own way rather than sticking to the recipe. So when we come here, we have no idea whether we’re going to get the “good version” of the dish we chose. Otherwise everything else is very very good here! We live in town so we ride our bikes here and eat outside in the summer. We also meet friends and family here regularly.
