Read morerestaurants like this are nearly extinct. this one is no different -- the owner is retiring, which means an inevitable ownership change that will completely alter the experience of the restaurant. and if recent ownership changes at other local food spots is any indication, it won't be a good experience. so i had to check out this place in its original incarnation before some non-columbus hedge fund bro messes with it. and i am SO glad i did.
this place is like stepping into a time machine and going to a different era. it feels like this interior has not changed since the 1970s. and that should absolutely be a point of pride; in a world where everything is focus group'd into a brutalist malaise and restaurants are remodeled every 5 years, this is refreshing. and very nostalgic. that point is also reflected in its unique queueing method for getting your food ordered and your drink + salad. it's hard to explain; you'll have to see it for yourself.
i got the honey glazed chicken. i wanted to see their take on a half chicken, and i've had my fill of steak lately. my date got the sirloin tips as she had heard high praise about them. after a bit of a wait (they were CRAZY busy thay day), we got to see for ourselves what the hype was about. let me tell you, this chicken was DELICIOUS. so incredibly flavorful, sweet and salty, penetrating every juicy bite. it paired perfectly with the classic steakhouse baked potato. (i definitely regret not loading that up!) and the sirloin tips were SO juicy and tender, just melt-in-your-mouth. this was a delicious dinner, and very little of it came home with us -- i absolutely demolished this half chicken, it was just so good.
york is the sort of restaurant you just don't see anymore. probably because it doesn't make some foreign investor group money as a concept. but how busy it is (and stays!) after all these years shows that there's demand for it. the presentation is one that is locked in time, walking into a childhood memory and enjoying a nice meal with family. experience this place...
Read moreStopped at the last remaining York Steakhouse after a day of archery in Columbus. I must confess that I selected this experience mostly for nostalgia. I wasn't expecting a fine dining experience. If I recall correctly there was York Steakhouse in the Upper Valley Mall in Springfield, Ohio during its peak operational period.
Walking into this establishment in 2024 was like walking back in time. The exterior and interior brings back decor memories of the 70's and early 80's.
The restaurant holds true to its original design and concept; a cafeteria. You take a tray, utensils, napkin and place your entree order. You walk down the line selecting your side item(s), dessert (if desired), and beverage, then arriving at a cashier station to pay. We were able to sit where we choose and a friendly server greeted us to get us settled and let us know that our entrees would be arriving shortly.
No frills here, I made the salad pictured below from the small salad bar that is part of the selection line, and no buffet or return trips to the bar.
The two smaller salads were from the salad bar, I just put them in separate serving cups. Both the coleslaw and macaroni salads tasted like the typical store bought items from the plastic tubs. My husband opted for the steak, medium rare and I selected the sirloin tips, medium with caramelized onions. We both had baked potatoes and a roll. The rolls were on the dry side as if sitting under a warming light for too long. Our steaks were prepared as requested and they were tender and juicy. Kudos to the grillmaster!
The food overall was good and rated average per my personal assessment scale. The service was really good, and the step back in time was priceless. The walk-down memory lane was fun and I can say I visited the last remaining...
