Dawn Makes Cakes — Restaurant in Fredericksburg

I waited two months to write this review to try and keep my emotions from overtaking and making sure this is very honest.

I picked Dawn to surprise my now husband with a grooms cake of the UT Austin tower, as that’s where we both went to school. I sent her my inspo pic, which you’ll be able to pick out from the below pics and asked if this was something she could execute. I told her if she couldn’t that we could figure something else out but that I wanted it to look exactly like the picture just on a smaller scale. She said she could do it and I trusted her based on the grooms cake pic on her website.

We were in the middle of taking pictures when she delivered the cake so we did not get to interact with her but my mom told me they practically ran out and sped off when delivering. The cake arrived damaged which she did give a 25% refund because of this. However, it did not make up for the fact that even if undamaged, the cake looked awful. It looked nothing like the inspo pic and wasn’t even burnt orange. I was genuinely embarrassed even having it displayed and noticed it started to lean so we moved it to a cooler area in the house to preserve it. As you can see from the photos, this didn’t help.

Within 1 hour of getting delivered, the cake fully collapsed. My husband and I were both very upset and didn’t even get to eat the cake. I sent her an email explaining what happened and showing the attached pictures and her response was “Again, can't apologize enough. Thank you for your grace.” That was it. My brother is a lawyer and insisted we make her give a full refund, as it’s our right. While we wanted a full refund, I felt too bad and also felt too bad to leave a negative review. Now that some time has passed, I just want my review to warn couples looking for someone to make their wedding cake.

Dawn isn’t capable of doing complex designs and as my brother said, this business should be called “Dawn Attempts to Make Cakes” instead of Dawn Makes Cakes. Giving a full refund would have been the right thing to do in this situation and I think it speaks a lot to her character that she didn’t and didn’t even feel bad about it. Please...

I cannot stress enough how highly I recommend Dawn for all your cake needs. She has been making cakes for me ever since I was a child, and most recently, she made my wedding cake. Dawn's talent and attention to detail are truly unmatched.

Not only are her cakes visually stunning, but they taste absolutely divine. The flavors are always moist, rich, and incredibly flavorful. I have never had a cake from Dawn that I didn't absolutely love.

Where do I start? I found this lady on Google. Saw her reviews and gave her a shot. I gave her a digital mock up of the cake and agreed on a price, $100. I thought it was high but I thought it was worth it. I asked her to send me an invoice. I got distracted and didn’t pay the invoice within 24 hours so I tried to reach out to pay. When I text her, she blocked my number and my Facebook where we were communicating. No reason. No conflict. Just blocked. I had my mom and boyfriend call and she immediately answered. Against my better judgment, I ordered with her. She actually tried to charge my mom $150 until I showed her the previous invoice. So she said she’d “honor it”. When we finally got the cake, it looked so bad and I was so embarrassed that I went through all this and the cake looked like an amateur made it. I was even move disappointed in how it tasted.
