Philz Coffee — Restaurant in Fremont

I’m leaving a 5 star review because one bad experience should not define the entire place. Philz makes amazing coffee and that has never changed. But today I came in for my usual and could not even get through the door because of what looked like a hiring event with Fremont PD. Once I made it inside, the shop was FILLED of police officers, I couldn’t even walk to the register without speaking to multiple officers asking them to step to the side.

First, this was a serious fire hazard. More importantly, with everything going on right now around immigration and increased fear in our communities, it was incredibly disappointing to see something like this happen with no thought to how it could impact customers. There are people who have trauma related to police or ICE and something like this can easily make them feel unsafe or excluded.

This could have been so easily avoided. Hosting a high-profile event like this in a public space, during open hours, with no heads-up, was a poor decision. It takes no extra effort to think through how your space makes people feel and take a more informed and inclusive approach.

I was not familiar with the Philz Coffee experience at all but I'm so glad that Cousin took me here to check them out!

Ambiance & Service: This is a high volume, noisy coffee joint that is hitting on all cylinders. The lines moved fast and all the staff seemed to know their role in the here. We were in a rush and they got our 7 drink order to us in under 10 minutes with a smile. Very well done.

Mint Mojito Coffee: Cousin told me that one of their signature drinks was the Mint Mojito Coffee. That sounded interesting but wasn't sure how this iced coffee drink would work out. It was fantastic. This mint mojito taste enhances the taste of the coffee blend and they pair so well together. The mint mojito is not overwhelming but refreshing while still staying true to it's iced coffee base. I haven't had a coffee drink like this before.

I discovered that they have locations in LA and San Diego and I'll be pushing for a stop at their locations if it makes sense. One Mint Mojito and I'm a major fan of Philz Coffee and I can't wait to try their avocado toast, desserts and more drinks on the next...
