update: Went back few days ago. This time wait time was about 10-15 minutes, much improved, partly due to 2 service lines and less people.
I ordered black sesame buns. Last time, black sesame was about 80% of the buns. This time, I was surprised to see sesame was 40-45% of the buns. I was very very disappointed. Either I was very lucky last time or I was unlucky this time. Regardless, they need to have a lot better quality control. Hopefully they weren’t trying to reduce the cost by sacrificing the quality. That’d be a very bad idea. I ordered 4 sesame buns and all like that with 40-45% sesame inside. 2023/12/21 12:56 pm
I went there 11/03 at 11:35 am. There were 15 people ahead of me, I was #16. I waited 66 minutes and placed my order at 12:41 pm and waited another 40 minutes to get my order at 13:21.
While waiting, the girl in front of me told me many people just cut in line. My order number was #30. That means many people just cut in line and this really angered me tremendously.
Here’s what I saw. Around 12:20 pm, a young woman saw her coworker waiting in line who’s (#13) so she stopped and started talking to him. I thought they were just chatting. Around 12:30 pm another young man showed up and he knew that woman apparently but not the guy(#13). Again, I thought they were just chatting. When I saw that woman placed her own order I was really mad and told that young man they were not supposed to do that since there’s so many people waited more than an hour they can’t just cut in like that. He told me they were together and he walked in and placed another order. Shame on those people. I think the store owner need to give out numbers or come up a better way to make sure this won’t happen again. It’s not fair to the people who waited a long time there.
If no one cut in , then my wait time should have been much shorter.
When I walked in to places my order, I was told there was a limit of two orders. Why they didn’t post a sign outside? I know it’s a soft opening still but the owner apparently didn’t plan it well. They need to do a lot better job with the process otherwise I won’t be there any more. That’s the worst experience I ever had.
Those buns are good but not that good to make me wait 106 minutes.
I hope those people who cut in line can see this review and feel shame about themselves, especially those two...
Read moreFINALLY trying out this bakery! got there around 4:30pm this past sunday and there was a short line. i ordered BBQ Pork Pineapple Bun, Salted Egg Pineapple Bun, Guava butter Pineapple Bun, Pandan Coconut Butter Pineapple bun and a few croissant egg tart.
when i opened the box of goods, i find them to be quite small. I'm used to the size from Kee Wah. And they also charges $4+ for one pineapple bun (plain)...though i guess it is $2+ for the plain too here at Pineapple King so in a way it's kind of the same price?
The buns are VERY soft and the crusty top was delicious. i dug in the guava butter first and only to find out that the butter is just half way through the bun. so I find it a bit expensive -- $4+ for just half filled. The guava butter was just okay, didn't have that strong of a guava flavor to it. i ended up spreading some of the butter on the other half of the bun.
The pandan coconut butter was NOT good at all. I love pandan coconut but this one had a bad after taste. the pandan was not good -- i had to scrape off the butter in order to finish the rest of the bun. i do not recommend the pandan coconut butter.
Both the BBQ Pork and the Salted Egg were good, but i wish the salted egg were more oozy. In their poster, it shows a picture of a more "lava" salted egg bun. but when i ate it, it's more of a custard. While the taste was good, the execution of the filling was disappointing. The bbq pork had very little filling as well which made it not that worth it. But if i had to buy one of the buns i ordered again, i'd get the bbq pork bun.
Now lets talk about the croissant egg tart. i thought it looked very good, that little burnt parts of the egg tarts (reminds me of portuguese egg tart). But the the crust was just rock hard. The filling is good but I personally did not like the croissant crust. it was so hard -- just wasn't a good experience.
Overall, the bun itself is very good. Very soft and the topping was excellent. Perhaps the best recommendation to give would be: go for the classic, plain pineapple bun. The ones with fillings are not worth it. But if you really want the a filling -- stick to...
Read moreOverall, good! We’ve never tried the SF location but heard from others how great Pineapple King is. We were heading to Osaka marketplace and saw the line for Pineapple King. We’ve been eyeing the place and didn’t even realize today is soft opening!
Did a spontaneous stop. What we thought was one to two hours wait ended up being 3 hours so definitely be prepared. We got in line around 2:50pm, ordered 4:30pm, received 5:45pm. 😬
Our favorite is the HK milk tea. We are huge fans of HK milk tea and this place now is going to be our favorite for it. Hopefully can order online in the future so we can more easily pick it up 😅
Next, my favorite would be the pineapple bun with butter. Beware though, it’s a lot of butter 😂 but it tasted heavenly while eating it. I did wish more of the buns were warmer as most were on the cold side / barely warm as we got the box. Husband enjoyed the salted egg pineapple bun. Daughter liked the original pineapple bun (no extra fancy flavors). The pandan coconut pineapple bun was pretty good too, maybe because I love those two flavors.
Husband did like the guava one but I wasn’t sure I liked it combined with pineapple bun. Maybe because I’ve only ever had plain pineapple buns so not used to all these other flavors in it.
We would want to go back and give it a try. Some flavors sold out so still want to try out the sesame one, etc. If anything, definitely want to go back for the HK milk tea. Hopefully, lines will die down and/or more efficient ordering and packaging process.
