I try to bring my black dollars to the black business but time and time again I am sadly disappointed with our Black Hebrew People here in Fresno. I went to Chef Paul's Café because I heard they had good Soul food there. First of all, when I walked threw the door I was fighting flies and it was hot as hell in there and no one greeted us, and we sat there for a while and everyone was staring at us(Like they never seen another black Hebrew Before). Then I order the 3 meat plate and they gave me 2 pieces of Tri-tip,1 dried out hot link,1 big rib and 1 tiny rib "AND I MEAN TINY"! And for my two sides I ordered 2 orders of fries and they only gave me one. What kind of mess is that? Had a nerve to charge me 15 dollars for that mess. While we were waiting the waiters and people were running around in confusion and almost bumping into us. Then looking around the place was not clean. I notice multiple people behind the counter bumping into each other and only one chef cooking (with the microwave) who was distress and overwhelmed with orders, with no gloves on. Then on top of that they had uncovered Raw Steak meat which was sitting out in the open and Flies were flying around that. By the way, while I was waiting for my meal the host was correcting the giggling school girls in the back about messing up my order, then one of the order takers had her purse on her shoulders taking orders because she was ready to go home(us Hebrews isn't no joke). Crazy! This Is my third black food business that I have patronized and have been very disappointed, WE do not operate professionally, or in the spirt of Excellence. We rather be mediocre and half-ass doing things I have seen it time and time again when it comes to black own business in Fresno its depressing. People wonder why we are forced to take our black dollars to other races! Please Chef Paul get your...
Read moreWent here with my boyfriend after a few people told us how amazing it was. There was no line but people were there. We were sat quickly but it took about 20 mins for our order to be taken and then about 45 mins to actually get our food. The food was moderately warm. I got smothered pork chops, greens and Mac n cheese. My bf got the bbq plate cabbage and Mac n cheese. When we finally got our food they told him they'd run out of cabbage so he needed to pick something else; I thought it may have been helpful to mention that before bringing the food out. He chose green beans instead which were kind of just thrown on his plate and the waitresses finger was in the bowl that she delivered. This smotherd pork chops were fine, tender and flavorful, the mac and cheese was subpar and the greens were average, both lacking any real flavor. My boyfriend said his ribs were tough, the green beans were oddly sweet, and he thought the mac and cheese was average. I also ordered red Kool-Aid. It tasted like red Kool-Aid, very sweet, but I suppose that's to be expected. That koolaid would still be very good without as much sugar. The cornbread was also average. Nothing about this meal was spectacular, it was all very average and even slightly below average. The staff were not very attentive, however a young male server with curly hair was fairly friendly and charismatic. But everybody else just seemed a bit hodgepodged together. And it was awkward seeing the owner laughing and conversing with guests when it was taking over an hour to get food. He seems perhaps like a sociable type of person who enjoys talking to guests but that can be slightly annoying when you're waiting over an hour for food. I would not go back here because I see no reason to wait over an hour for mediocre, room...
Read moreI don't remember the name of the plate I had, but I do remember what it had.
Tri Tip, Sausage, Ribs, Mashed Potatoes, Mac & Cheese, Corn Bread and a Sweet Tea and a half hearted smile and my Sunday afternoon was filled with some of the best sleep I've had in ages after a heavy soul food meal!
The tri tip was juicy and tender, and it had no sauces added to it, so you could taste the spices and the flavor of the meat itself. The sausage was a spicy, red sausage. The ribs had candied bbq and were delicious! The meat from the ribs was easy to eat from the bone, but the meat itself wasn't too soft or mushy and it wasn't dry (like the dry chicken strip type of meat you get when you go order chilis bbq ribs - still salty).
The mashed potatoes and gravy were okay but they outdid themselves with the Mac and cheese. Seems to me they use multiple cheeses in their Mac n cheese and those are my favorite Mac and cheese recipes! Mac & cheese. The cornbread was cold. It was still delicious. I'd have to go there right on opening time to see if it's even better right out the oven.
If I'm being completely honest, our waitress was somewhat unpleasant but everyone else in the restaurant was fast and friendly, and they're all very efficient workers. The food was great.
The location is in China Town. It's not the best part of town, I'll admit, and a ton of the people who visit chef paul's during the day wouldn't be caught on F street past 10pm, but at 11:30 in the morning you'll be just fine. Give this spot a try, I'm sure you'll...
