Played the West course on a Saturday afternoon with my brother and father for an early father's day celebration.
To start, the staff around the property are attentive and hospitable. From bag drop off, to the pro shop, the range and the starter, no complaints at all.
For everything else... At a public guest rate of $300+, you would expect the conditions to be near immaculate. Not the case here. The range is nice, with attendants setting up stations for you with balls from one of the big 3 (Titleist, Callaway, Taylormade). All the balls you can hit and bottled water you would need to get your swing in order. No shade anywhere on the range though, so, on most summer days here, you won't be out there for too long.
The chipping and putting green adjacent to the #1 tee boxes were in rough shape (Didn't putt on the Dance Floor, so don't know how that compared). The starter told us the chipping and putting greens didn't represent the greens on the course which were "in excellent shape. Smooth and lightning fast".
Actual course conditions: The greens weren't terrible, like what you can find at other area courses, but they were far from being perfect. These were bumpy and maybe a tad faster than typical muni speed (so maybe 10-10.5 on stimp?) They are pretty firm, so playing high approach shots is a must.
Some of the fringes around the greens were scalped down to dirt due to mowers not paying attention to undulations. Mostly an eye sore unless you chose to putt through them.
Fairways were in good shape and drain really well (even with major multi-day storms just a few days earlier).
Bunkers were fine (except that the few that I went into were littered with unraked footprints. Reflection of the golfers, not the course itself)
No complaints about the tee boxes.
My expectations for the course were set very high because of the price and weren't even close to being met. At this price point, you're not allowed to have an "off day/week". Like a previous reviewer posted, you can find better conditions elsewhere for much lower cost.
And that's what I would recommend. Play elsewhere if you're looking for a better valued...
Read moreI played the East course and stayed one night each in the resort rooms and the golf villas. The lodging at both facilities was absolutely top notch. Excellent, modern design, well equipped, and well situated. Room service was prompt. Every single staff member I encountered, from the front desk, to waiters and waitresses, to the dedicated staff at the villas was exceptional. All had a great service attitude, were engaging and knowledgeable. Also all of the food I had was very good.
The golf, however, left a bit to be desired, in my view. As a bit of background, I golf a lot, about 100 rounds a year, and am lucky enough to play most of my golf at private clubs. I am a single digit index. So I have seen a course or two. That said, the practice facilities at Fields Ranch are exceptional. You could spend all day there. The design and condition of East course was not what I was hoping for. The front nine has many meandering “natural areas” that criss-cross the course. Playing it for the first time with a caddie that was a non-golfer (super sweet guy with a great attitude but not a good caddie) made it very difficult to navigate. I thought the fairways were in “ok” shape - certainly not great and certainly not up to the standard of most of the area’s nicer private clubs, despite what other reviewers have shared. The greens were in very good condition, albeit firm, as you would expect from a young course. The back nine I thought was laid out better and a bit more “what you see is what you get”. It was certainly more playable.
In summary, the overall facility is ambitious, well executed, and very enjoyable. But in my view the caddie quality could be upgraded and the East course, especially the front, could benefit from some trimming and better management of the natural areas. If you are coming for the overall experience, dining and drinking and outing or buddy golf, I think you will love it. If you are coming to play a world class golf course, at least in its current state, I think you will be...
Read moreThis will definitely be a destination course and facility once word gets out. The East and West course are both challenging in different ways. East course is overall more difficult, its a walking course with caddie. The West course is still hard, the greens are tricky and if you don't land them soft, you are sliding all the down a false front or bunker. The 9th hole bunker is pure evil to get out of. Overall you best bring your short game. The greens are slippery and whoever puts the pins down in the am; might have a little streak of mean as you might be approaching the greens in regulation only to be disappointed when you ball hits a false front and rolls all the back down 30 yards. Your then praying to get your bogey in and leave that hole. If you are traveling, they offer brand new club rentals with Callaway, Titleist and others to try, this includes ladies models which my girlfriend loved when she went there.
The staff are 5-star service, the valet, pro shop, rangers, food service are friendly and very professional. They really go out of their way to be helpful and give you the lay of the land. This is an Omni resort so it does not disappoint in the service area. Food is also amazing. The bbq house is fun and lively with top golf simulators you can play. The Ryder Cup restaurant has a good variety for breakfast and lunch. The Korean Tacos, Nachos, Truffle Cheese Fries and Caesar Street Corn salad are must tries. Tom at the bar is amazing and really went out of his way to give us options for drinks. Great recommendations for red wine and some fresh fruit cocktail that our table enjoyed!
The only area I was disappointed in was the apparel brands available. There is very limited selection of ladies and not many of the more popular brands, literally one small little rack. That said, overall this is a 5-star course and facility that I would highly recommend, once they start running some pro events, its going to be...
