DO NOT BOOK FOR EVENTS!
My experience with Phil Carter and The Toasted Goat/Hotel Gunter was one of the worst of my life. Management and owners are an utter disaster and extremely disrespectful. Do not book the Toasted Goat/Hotel Gunter for events!
As a result of COVID in 2020, my husband and I had to reschedule our wedding reception. I am new to the Frostburg area having accepted a new position with the University in May. I was initially excited to find the Toasted Goat and thought it would be a perfect venue for our now smaller wedding reception. I couldnât have been more wrong. Our reception was held on Oct. 23rd to disastrous results and Hotel Management has yet to respondâlikely because they have their money. As an overview for those who do not wish to read the full series of events below, I showed-up on the 23rd only to find that the room that I had reserved and paid for was not set for our eventâand the Chef/Partial Owner Phil Carter was extremely disrespectful as he literally yelled at me that it was not reserved for me (despite full email documentation and paid invoice) and all but called me a liar.
Between the deposit, meal tab, bar tab, gratuity, and room reservations, we spent over $2k in one eveningâonly to be yelled at, degraded, and made to feel unwelcome. My wedding reception is stained by my insulting treatment, and itâs heartbreaking that I was not able to enjoy the eveningâsomething that I will never be able to get back. I was extremely embarrassed to be yelled at (at my wedding reception) in front of family, friends, my husband, and hotel staff.
Further, Management assured me that they would try to remedy the situation and asked that I share my experience with the owner via email. It has now been more than three weeks and no one has reached out. Please review my full post including original emails on...
Read moreLocated in the beautiful historic Hotel Gunter, the Toasted Goat is that place to dine when you want something different. They have a main dining area, an outdoor patio area and a Speakeasy where trivia nights are held. There are slight variations to the menu depending on which area you dine in, but the food and beverages, especially their signature bottled wines, are amazing. Although "Three Hot Blondes" is a popular wine choice, their Dragongoat is probably my favorite with a side of Baked Brie or an order of local cheese and fresh fruit. They feature monthly Martinis or other cocktails that are always very unique and delicious. Service has always been prompt; however there are times when reservations may be necessary, as they can get busy in the dining room. The staff have been very friendly every time we have visited. The food is fresh and hot. I would recommend the Ahi Tuna with Mango Salsa, Crab Stuffed Flounder, Maryland Crab Soup or the Quinoa Salad.Their Chocolate Lasagna is a staple piece and probably one of the best desserts I have eaten. After you finish your meal, you can walk through the basement and tour the old jail or look at artifacts from years gone by which are on display in cases. The Toasted Goat/Hotel Gunter features events for Halloween and also does packages with stays in the hotel and dinner on occasion. They also do an amazing Mother's Day Brunch. It is truly a gem in Western Maryland for good food, great service and a unique...
Read moreWe had a delightful experience at the Toasted Goat during our layover on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad journey from Cumberland to Frostburg. On a bustling Saturday afternoon, with just one waitress and one bartender managing the crowd, they did their best to ensure everyone felt welcome. Although the pace was lively, and they couldn't quite get us through our meal within the layover time, their friendly demeanor made up for it.
Realizing time was ticking away, we opted to have our delicious meals boxed up. The clever move allowed us to savor the flavors on the return trip to Cumberland. Every member of our party (according to my informal survey) praised the food quality. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. I would definitely revisit and wholeheartedly recommend the Toasted Goat for its scrumptious food, inviting atmosphere, and warm service. Just a heads up, if you plan to dine in during your railroad layover, time might be a bit tight, but it's absolutely...
