Decided to eat here based on the name, and the fact I haven't had fried green tomatoes in several years. The namesake dish was interesting. Definitely not what I was expecting, but flavourful and different. Rather than a southern profile, it was based on Italian flavours. The fried tomato was covered with mozzarella cheese broiled to get the cheese melted and crisp and then covered with a tomato sauce. The sauce was reminiscent of, almost, a pizza sauce, but with stronger Italian seasoning and a burst of what I think was the flavour of green pepper. Usually I think green pepper is overpowering, but here it really worked.
Went on to have the crab cakes, which were good, but not great. The flavour was missing something, even with the mustard/ mayo sauce.
For the main course, I had the Vegan Gnocchi cacciatore with Beefless tips. If you've had Garden Beefless tips, I'm fairly certain that is what they are, and I suspected it when I ordered. They have the same texture and similar taste, so if you like them you won't be disappointed. The meal was actually very good. A nice balance of green and red peppers lent a sweet and tangy flavor to the tomato sauce. My least favorite part of the dish was the gnocchi. It was fine tasting, but texture and flair reminded me of a gnocchi that I've bought at Trader Joe's.
All in all it was a good meal. We sat outside in the back which has been tastefully decorated and has a slight romantic air about it. Good place for a date night.
And the last picture I posted with the review was brunch the next morning. I used the fried green tomatoes, crab cakes and the bread from dinner to make an egg dish that turned out delicious. Great use of the leftovers and all of the flavours worked...
Read moreWe went with family on the 4th of July during the pandemic so we were very conscious of being safe and socially distant. Parking is difficult to find if you don't want to pay the $10 parking fee. At this time they have seating out front under a tent and out back also under a tent. We choose in the back because there was no one there and we want to avoid as many people as possible. It was very comfortable but if it had one downside it would be the art on the wall was a little inappropriate for our daughter, as it was a bare breasted female I get it is art but she found it very awkward and we felt bad for her. The staff all had face masks on for our safety which we appreciated, they were all very attentive and took care of every request we had. One person at the table ordered a cocktail and it was delicious, fresh and perfectly balanced. The menu is pretty limited but we all found something to order. They also have a children's menu if you should happen to need it. We ordered 2 appetizers one was their fried green tomatoes and one was the pesto bruschetta which were served in a timely manner and they were both delicious. Our server kept the meal flowing nicely which made for a very nice experience, as we finished our appetizers he brought out a piping hot loaf of bread and our salads. The salads were a very nice mix of greens with tomato wedges, cucumber slices, black olives and topped with a house dressing. As we finished our salad he cleaned off those plates and brought out our entrées. The entrées were delicious and were served hot had fresh. We ordered 3 orders of the Garlic Spinach Tortellini and one order of Chicken Marsala. The overall experience was very good and I...
Read moreFGT is good overall, but for the price it’s hard to give 5stars. We had one cocktail, two entrees (just steak and linguini with seafood) two appetizers (crab cakes and bruschetta) two sides of rustic potatoes, for a total of $160 before tip. Everything was good… just not exceptional. Entrees came with salad, default dressing was raspberry vinaigrette, and I don’t like that so I didn’t eat the salad. Don’t remember being asked what type of dressing I would prefer. Salad dressing issue is kind of nit picking I realize…We had to ask for water several times. Pace of meal was good. Server offered a free dessert because we were celebrating our anniversary, but we could only choose from a scoop of ice cream or crème brûlée…tiramisu and French silk pie were on the menu but not available as complimentary. I would rather have had either of those, but we passed on the dessert altogether. Steak was good but at this price point that is expected, nothing extraordinary. Crab cakes were good, I really enjoyed them but not the best I’ve had. Pasta dish was spicy as expected. Rustic potato’s were tasteless, sorry but in my opinion they were simply cubed potatoes. I am no chef but at home I make crispy smashed potatoes by tossing generously with olive oil and roughly diced garlic and sautéed until crispy exterior. I do this using the little red potatoes, which smash well after being sautéed until they have a soft interior; oily, garlicky, crispy, rustic. Maybe I was simply expecting something else. Anyway, at this price point I was not really blown away, sorry to say. Overall good experience. Staff was friendly. Dining room was clean and...
