Totally honest review after 2 large orders with coworkers:
1st visit- we ordered at the counter for takeout: Girl was very helpful and knew the menu well. Answered questions. She did not ask if we were there for dine-in or takeout and when I asked for one of the items to be packed separately, it seemed like it really messed up the order because I had already paid and she said she didn't know it was "take out". Maybe this could be part of their order taking process. The beinets were a huge hit. Soft/moist on inside. Fair priced. The fried catfish by the pound/piece was amazing. Thank you for serving with a lemon. Would like it to come with tarter. This is a huge hit and has been consistent. Good price and large pieces. Will continue to order. Andouille sausage blackened came butterflied and was great. The catfish po'boy was underwhelming and didn't have much fish and was mostly bread. The club sandwich was amazing. Would order again. I got the half and was worth it. The Cuban sandwich was okay. Could have more flavor or something special to make it unique. Lastly, coworker hated the fries. Said it wasn't worth it for the price, size-wise and were obviously frozen from a bag. Easy item to make or don't offer them on the menu.
Visit 2 we ordered online: 3 of us got food poisoning from the andouille sausage. ): it was the only thing the 3 of us all ordered and we were the only ones affected so it narrowed it down to the sausage. This time it was not blackened and did not get sliced lengthwise. Will not be ordering it again because the food poisoning was miserable.
The catfish was great again. Coworker tried the red beans and rice and loved it. He got the small cup size. Maybe a bit pricy for the cup size. He was hesitant on the bowl because the price. Maybe if it was $1 or $1.50 less than it is, we would order regularly We got 3 pieces of Muffuletta. All loved it good portion. Good price. Would love if we could get 3/4 size as we needed 3 pieces and I had to order 1/2 and a 3rd slice separately. Was interested in the banana dessert and asked cashier but she couldn't really describe it and didn't show us what it looked like. Photos or desserts on display would help. Coworker loved his bread pudding. I know it's not traditional, but would be curious to know if you could order a slice of tomato on muffuletta.
Anyways, I hope my feedback helps. We want to try again despite the food poisoning from the sausage... I think catfish and mufuletta are the true winners here. Beinets, bread pudding, red beans and rice a close 2nd!
Btw I would love a jambalaya just because I know I would suck...
ย ย ย Read moreService wasn't good. Came in the back entrance, so didn't see the sign that gave ordering instructions. Employee was adjusting the tv by the counter.. apparently we were in her way when we asked for a table. She walked off and we were left to stand alone for 5 minutes.. someone else came out and was doing something behind the counter.. never addressed us so had no idea this one would take our order.
It's a counter-service place btw... which is why I was surprised when I got hit with a tip request. If I gotta refill my own drink.. you don't get a tip. Plus I hadn't even sat down. What the what???
Convoluted menu... basically a'la cart food by the pound. Do you know what a pound of onion rings looks like? Me neither. Price on a 5 pc chicken tender looked great.. unfortunately a piece is the size of your pinky.. should've specified mini-chicken tender filets on the menu.
Fried catfish was slimy and undercooked (seasoned nice tho). Replacement had edges that were too tough to chew. Hard pass.
Cajun club sandwich was a pretty average tasting sandwich. Nothing at all cajun about it.
Onion rings were the most perfectly cooked I've had in a long time.. but had zero flavor. Not even onion.
Red Beans and Rice were excellent.. probably the best anywhere around here. Begneits were pretty decent. These were the only highlights in the visit.
Prices sounded really good the way the menu presents it, but in reality it was on the pricier side when you're done. Was kinda hungry after spending $20+ per person..
Verdict: Food wasn't great. Concept wasn't great. Service wasn't great. Red Beans and rice were great. Never seen a creole joint that didn't have crawfish.. also prepackaged shelf-stable tarter sauce.. what? Zapp's packaged potato chips on the menu? Is this a quickie mart or a creole restaurant?
Without quality changes, I don't expect this...
ย ย ย Read moreAlright, y'all. I am no NOLA expert by any means, but I know good food when I eat it. Rouxs Creole Cafe opened today in Gallatin, so obviously I had to go check it out. They're in the old Starr Ranch spot just off the square.
We arrived just after they opened and there were a couple other parties already seated. We pretty much knew what we wanted when we walked in so we headed to the counter, placed our order, and snagged a seat in the revamped sun room. We waited a bit longer than I think the norm will be (right at 30 minutes), but that's sort of to be expected in my opinion for opening day (month?). They were very apologetic for the wait. Two people, one being the presumptive chef/owner, made sure to touch the table and apologize for the delay. Come to find out one of the fryers went down this morning so they had a little bit of a back up.
The food... Let's just say there wasn't much left. We ordered two different po' boys, red beans and rice, seafood gumbo, blackened catfish, and (of course) beignets. The gumbo, in my humble opinion, needs a little work. It wasn't the worst I've ever had and I finished it, but I'm willing to bet most of my NOLA friends will agree that a little tweaking is in order. That said, I did enjoy it.
The rest of the food, on the other hand, was exactly what I expected and I couldn't have been happier with our choices. The po' boys were perfect, the red beans and rice was delicious, the catfish (which can also be fried) was so good it made me sad I didn't order more, and the beignets were delightful and served in a paper bag just like the good lord intended.
I'm finding fewer and fewer reasons to leave Sumner County for good food. Rouxs will absolutely be in our regular rotation. Laissez les bons temps rouler!...
