My boyfriend and I have been going to Fish Company Taco ever since we found out about it from a friend 2 years ago. He was a regular when the place was owned by Chef Daya and went multiple times a week. We were both devastated to see it gone and EXTATIC to see that it had come back under new management a few months later. However, that sentiment changed when we went to try everything under the new management.
The tacos (all except for the new Captain Johnny) are the exact same recipes from the previous management. I'm not sure if the exchange of the building/name meant an exchange of the recipes as well or what, but the majority of the taco recipes are from the previous owners, who are not there anymore. The new management knows how to follow a recipe, at least, because these are an accurate recreation and still very, very yummy. My personal favorites that we always went back to are the Dirty South and the Empire. The brand new Captain Johnny, however, is DISGUSTING. An absolute soggy mess of flavorless shrimp PASTE that is overly spicy only for the sake of miming that it may have a flavor at all. I have had better Taco Bell tacos.
Extremely disappointing that the ONLY entree item that is an original recipe from this new management tastes even worse than dog food.
The frescas are okay, if a bit artificial tasting and the brussel sprouts were very yummy as well. Though, I believe the brussel sprouts are the same recipe from the previous owners as well, so...
They have also taken away almost all of the outdoor seating to instead use the side alleyway as some sort of crate storage??? Very disappointing and, honestly, confounding that a location so close to the beach would remove it's outdoor seating areas?
The one thing this new management has done for the better is the open hours are a lot more available. The servers were very nice, if a bit pushy in rushing you at times.
We are devastated at the loss of a locally owned place with actual heart and soul. The Fish Company Taco under this new management feels more like an Instagram backdrop with okay drinks than the SPECTACULAR hole-in-the-wall mom and pop that we had grown to adore so much. We miss...
Read moreTucked away on Galveston Island, Fish Company Taco is an absolute hidden gem that deserves way more recognition. From the moment you walk in, the laid-back, beachy vibe sets the tone for an incredible dining experience. The service? Easily some of the friendliest I’ve encountered genuinely welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu.
Now, let’s talk about the food. The red snapper crudo was nothing short of spectacular fresh, vibrant, and packed with flavor. (We had 3 orders) Every bite had the perfect balance of acidity and spice, making it a must-order dish. Then came the tacos, and wow each one was more flavorful than the last. The ingredients were fresh, the seasoning was on point, and the textures were just right. And can we talk about the cucumbers? They were the bomb bright, tangy, and refreshing, adding the perfect contrast to the rich, savory bites.
To drink, I had the Lime in the Coconut (without alcohol), and it was hands down one of the most refreshing drinks I’ve ever had. Creamy, citrusy, and light perfect for a warm and foggy Galveston day.
When the server wasn’t busy with customers, he was actively keeping the place spotless wiping down tables and even cleaning the front glass door. That attention to detail was impressive. And if you're lucky, you might even run into a Galveston celebrity or two while you’re there.
And let’s not forget the happy hour an absolute steal for the quality of food and drinks you’re getting. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Fish Company Taco is a must-visit spot for fresh, flavorful food, great vibes, and top-notch service. We will...
Read moreThis is absolutely a must go for when in Galveston! This is what I hope for with every restaurant I enter, regardless of cuisine, price point, or size. Fresh, innovative and delicious food!
From my understanding, this is a local couple who own this business and they’re doing a fantastic job. They’re making the conscious effort to provide fresh, seasonal products with delicious taste. Every time I’ve come, everyone has been friendly and nice.
I honestly feel like the pricing is very fair here. $4/taco and 2 of them fills me. So you’re looking at $8/meal, depending on if you get a drink and/or side. That’s the same pricing as anywhere else and you’re getting EXCELLENT quality food.
Small downside is that this is a small business, so pending how busy they are, they can get backed up. That being said, it still wasn’t a crazy long wait and I think this has the potential to change as the business grows. Other small downside is that once they’re out, they’re out. That’s the price when you’re getting that kind of fresh! Again, I think this has a potential to even out as business grows but time will tell.
Small downsides aside, this restaurant deserves every bit of 5 stars and more. Galveston needs more places like this.
P.S. - Try the potato salad!!! It’s amazing! The tastes here are unique and you’ve gotta be willing to try it all to see that the...
