McGuire-Dent Recreation Center — Attraction in Galveston

My husband and I visited The McGuire-Dent Recreation Center to see what they have to offer and I have to say we were shocked by the amenities for so cheap!

I'm not one that works out, at all, ever, and it shows. I was finally able to acquire medical insurance after many years without and surprise surprise, guess who needs to "make some changes"...hence the visit to the Rec Center.

As one that's not familiar with working out I won't be able to name many of the machines or equipment offered here but there are weights, free weights, elliptical, treadmills, a pool, pickleball, and some sort of floor exercises where a lady was softly repeating the phrase "downward dog" while folks pointed their bums towards the heavens. Do with that information what you will....but they offer that here.

This Rec Center is on Seawall Blvd so while you use most machines your view is of the Gulf of Mexico. There's also several exercise accoutrement outdoors that's available for free. Before this deliberate visit to the Rec Center portion of this area, the closest I've ever been was the dog park in the back of the property.

The dude showing us around was very helpful. He said he was initially just a patron but eventually felt he should help others become members so now works there as well as work out there. We were there about 6pm on a weekday and there were machines available.

Ok so look, as a local, $30 for a gym membership you just can't beat...not per month....PER YEAR! Per year folks! You're not gonna find that...

Mixed review. My son has only been here once. BUT PEOPLE: LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES AT HOME IT WILL BE STOLEN. This place I assumed would be safe and my son wanted to ball. And it might be.

But we are visiting Galveston past 9 years. (I'm from here). My son was ballin with local galvestonians who seemed nice. The guys asked him questions, figured out out-of-towner, took the opportunity to take advantage of him, then stole his bag in FULL view of my son.....with portable $300 speaker, (he played while ballin)...vape, wallet with ID and bank card, iPhone 7 plus. I mean my son was the only one playing and these creeps ASKED if they could play w him. WOW. I've NEVER had problems with Galveston. My rating: NO STARS. Front guy kind of nice. Not at all helpful about our stuff being stolen one bit when police needed his address. He was very short with my son in answering. It was almost closing time. Just WOW. BEWARE!!!! Oh and cameras are in the inside...

Updated low star rating because of the parking lot car break-in, lack of care, lack of competent security, and lack of quality cameras here.
