So my husband and I checked out the other Taqueria Tsunami location several months back and had an ok experience - the service was good but food was just mediocre. Well, we decided to give this location a try today. Sad to say, but not surprised - we were completely disappointed with our food this time around too. I was super excited to try the tsunami bowl, but it turned out awful. The shrimp was great, but the rice was undercooked. There were FOUR tiny pieces of avocado. The “tomato” was like mashed tomatoes paste - no fresh diced tomato. And the peppers...I don’t even know if those tiny green pieces were the promised jalapeños or the poblano peppers, but one was entirely missing and whatever did end up in the bowl, was a tiny amount, just like the avocado and tomatoes. 99% of the bowl was rice, which, obviously you can expect most of the bowl to be rice as it is a rice bowl...BUT, there was hardly anything with it. It would’ve taken me 2 minutes eat all the shrimp and I would be left with a giant blob of tomatoey rice with no veggies or meat to go with it! So I didn’t eat much and just returned it. My husband got their tacos for a second time, and well, it was again a disappointment. Not very much flavor and he ended up in the bathroom for a while once we got home after eating here. We really wanted to like this place, but for the price, the portions are not only tiny, but the food isn’t even decent. Will not be coming back here, that’s for sure.

Reunited with a friend over lunch. We hadn't seen each other in years and she had never been to Taqueria Tsunami so I was overjoyed this is where we ended up. We started with chicken empanadas. They were good and warm but the chicken was slightly dry. Our entrees were delicious; we ordered a rice bowl and salad. We were there at lunch time so I expected more of a crowd but it was fairly slow that day so I didn't feel bad about taking more time to catch up with my friend since there was seating available and not just in our server's section. I like to be mindful of that if I'm spending more time than normal because I know how important turning tables can be and I don't mind tipping generously if that's the case. Our server was friendly and brought our food out and refilled our drinks during the meal. Unfortunately, she never returned after she dropped off our tab. We visited for quite some time afterwards and it would have been nice to get another drink, but our server never returned. Honestly, I'm not one to run someone down either and by the time we left, our empty glasses and the check were waiting for the server to return. It is what it is and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and visit with each other regardless.

Anyone that reads my things probably knows I've been pretty hateful of the service industry since the pandemic began and ended. All the good people left and didn't come back. Taqueria Tsunami was and is an amazing surprise hiding in a strip mall in Athens GA. The staff were quick, helpful, and wonderful. Good drinks, good food, and good service. As the name suggests, this is Spanish and Japanese influences brought together. The app... there is only one on the plate in the pic because the Mrs. And I gobbled them down so quickly. A chunky guacamole wrapped in egg roll with 2 dips? Hell yes! Then shrimp tempura taco. Oh my!!! I was an incredible fan of the Korean beef taco, but thats just me. Served a bit cold and that's not my thing. The Mrs. had a sashimi kinda poke bowl that she took home with her and ate all evening because of all the textures. If you find yourself in Athens for a game, a concert, or just shopping... track this place down.

The food at this location is always great, and our most recent experience was no exception. However, the service could use some MAJOR work and oversight.

To start, the bartender with the booming voice has a horrible habit of using profanity. This isn’t a bar in downtown Athens. It’s a restaurant where families should feel comfortable bringing kids. But this guy and his constant f-bombs make that really difficult. This is the second time we’ve been in and noticed his potty mouth. I doubt I will ever go back inside with my kids.

After we had ordered an appetizer, our waitress proceeded to chat with someone at the bar for 15 minutes while we tried to get her to come back and take our order. When she finally noticed us looking, she said, “be there in a minute” and proceeded to finish her conversation. She finally did come to the table and said, “I heard you wanted to order your meal after your appetizer came.” Not sure where she heard this since we hadn’t spoken to her or anyone else since we ordered our appetizer.

We probably would have overlooked these situations, and I wouldn’t have felt the need to leave a review were it not for the puppy. There was a couple on the patio area with a puppy and AT LEAST 6 or 7 employees went out there to pet, hug, and pick up this animal for 5 minutes or more at a time. Meanwhile, patrons are waiting to be seen and probably not realizing that their servers are playing with an animal between food runs. This was incredibly unsanitary, and I couldn’t help but wonder if all of those people washed their hands (and clothes) after playing with the hairy (Labrador) dog.

Finally, and most surprisingly, while we were sitting in our booth enjoying our appetizer, one of the employees dropped a bottle of cleaning solution behind me and splattered it in my hair, on my clothes, and on our table/food. About half a dozen employees were there to help with the cleanup, and they clearly noticed us wiping ourselves down. However, not a single one of them apologized or asked if we needed napkins. Not one person even acknowledged that this happened.

This location lacks oversight and direction. They could also use a major refresher on sanitization and customer service when you make a mistake. I’m a patient patron since I was once a server myself. But this was A LOT of problems for...

A friend and I went for the first time after hearing a lot of great things. Unfortunately, we were not overly impressed. We were seated immediately, even during their busy dinner rush, which was great. However, our service was very slow; our waitress was very slow tending to our needs, taking our order, getting refills, etc.

We ordered two appetizers: the avocado egg rolls and the cheese dip. The avocado egg rolls were just alright, though the portion to price ratio felt like a horrible value. The cheese dip was pretty good however and more reasonably priced with what you would expect.

Before I go any further, I want to say that the presentation of every dish that came out of the kitchen looked amazing. However, looks are only good for first impressions. For our main dishes, I ordered 3 different tacos with couscous as a side. The tacos were good, but the couscous was served cold (which surprised me) and was overall fairly bland. I tried spicing up the couscous with other seasonings, but nothing seemed to help elevate the flavor. My friend ordered one of their poke bowls and was very unsatisfied with it. I thought maybe he had not had poke before and that's why he didn't like it, but when I tried it, I was unimpressed as well. It was very bland as well and while they offered Sriracha sauce with it, it wasn't served with any other things typically associated with sushi such as wasabi, soy sauce, etc. It was a bed of white rice with tuna, and various other raw vegetables such as cucumber. I finally was able to get it tasting decent by requesting various sauces from the kitchen, but at that point my friend didn't want anymore.

Overall, the environment is nice, the wait staff seems very nice, the presentation of dishes is amazing, but the taste and value of dishes leaves something to be desired. For the most part, you feel like your at an upscale restaurant with mediocre food. I know many people love it, but it simply...
