It came as no surprise to us that our latest dining experience at J. Gilbert's Woodfired Steaks and Seafood would live up to all of our previous five star experiences. On this visit I finally decided to have the wood fired ribs that my son raves about, that he also ordered on this visit. But I'm getting ahead of myself. My daughter in law started with a Sparkling Blackberry Martini that she declared to be "positively marvelous". My son had fresh brewed ice tea that was poured hot at our table into a glass of ice, by our very attentive server, Kyle. Doesn't get any fresher than that. A nice, warm, round loaf of freshly baked bread that has a nice crunchy crust, and is sliced into wedges, is served with two kinds of butter. We started with an appetizer of a Pagoda of onion rings served with three different sauces. Very delectable! I ordered the Maryland crab bisque that was served at the table with a generous amount of crab meat piled in the middle of the bowl, while Kyle poured the warm bisque around it, so I could mix the fresh crab meat into the bisque. It was WONDERFUL. Thick, and very rich in flavor. Kim had the special of the day, a 6 oz. fillet wth a demi glaze, creamed corn with Burgers Bacon, and Yukon Gold mashed potatoes. It's always her favorite when we dine here. My son and I both opted for what is his perennial favorite, the wood fired ribs served with the creamed corn, and fries. I decided to skip the fries and substituted the lobster mac & cheese for a small upcharge. It was absolutely delicious, and worth every cent of the upcharge. The creamed corn that was one of the optional side dishes was, as always, a delightful choice. The ribs, which were a first for me were a formidable amount to contemplate eating after the bread, onion rings, and lobster mac & cheese. They were perfectly cooked, smokey, and falling off the bone tender. They were nicely coated in a sauce that was sweet at first taste, then had an unexpected, but very pleasant amount of heat immediately after. Savory and absolutely fantastic. For dessert, my son had a cup of orange glaze coffee made with Grand Marnier, Kahlua, and Brandy 9. Kim opted for New York Style Cheesecake with Blueberry compote & whipped cream. I had the Seven Layer Coconut Cake, served with macadamia nuts, pineapple ice cream, and passion fruit sauce. Kim said her cheesecake was delicious. My coconut cake was divine....... really. As always, the service was spot on, without being overbearing or lacking. Thank you Kyle!

Came for a birthday dinner. Reservations for 7pm but didnt get seated til almost 7:30. Busy Happy hour crowd on a Tuesday night. Not much room in the foyer of the restaurant to have so many guests waiting to be seated. Expected that the crowd would be a little more chique. I saw lots of jeans and children. Table we were seated at for 2 was extremely small in the bar area. Dark lighting and industrial style decor. They attempted celebratory confetti on the table. I appreciated the small gesture. On to the food!!! Apps/drinks: Sour dough bread with house butter AND pastrami butter. Loved the butters. Pastrami had the notes of the deli meat without any meat. Would've liked a different bread pairing. LOVED the homemade chips the blue cheese dressing!!! Sooo good! Ask for additional dressing. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc was divine. The birthday guest had a merlot and ended up also getting a glass of the Kim Crawford. GET THE KIM CRAWFORD!!! Thank me later. Crab cakes had loads of crab. But I prefer a bit of a crust surrounding my crab cake which left me wanting for more texture. It was paired with a mango chutney or salsa which was good on its own. I could have done without it with the crab cakes. The remoulade and other dip were good. Entree: 10oz sirloin cooked medium was good, not great. Left me needing more of flavor but the J Gilberts steak sauce- HONEYYYYY elevated that flavor profile!! Truffle mushrooms and mash potatoes were very good! Special was a 14oz aged 40 days cut. Had a waaaay better taste. Birthday guest was very happy. That was accompanied with lobster Mac with nice chunks of lobster and a beautiful cheese pull. The au gratin potatoes were ok. Dessert: Get the creme brulee! Decadent!!! You won't be sorry! I promise. Our server was awesome. She new all about her dishes. They were attentive without overdoing it. We had a beautiful evening overall. Overall cost wasn't too bad...$225 +tip Would visit again if someone wanted to go but I'd rock jeans and be comfortable. No need for the fancy dress and heels. Get the Kim Crawford!!! Seriously:)

We had a 630pm reservation for a birthday celebration that was NOT ready. They sat us 20+ minutes late in a corner table by the booths as if they just threw something together. It took another 15-20 minutes later for our server, Stefan, to acknowledge us and serve us water. It was a Friday and they’re busy; they’re always busy for the times we’ve been here. However, this visit was chaotic and the WORSE visit. We ordered our drinks and those took forever to come out. A Diet Coke and Coke should be the quickest drinks to come out. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that he wanted all drinks to come out at once but at the rate we were going, I would’ve brought things out as they were done. We put in two appetizers of fried calamari. Unfortunately, the calamari was overcooked. The batter barely stayed on the calamari as the overcooked calamari was so shriveled and burnt. It’s too bad because their calamari is usually delicious but not this time. Here’s what really upset me: I ordered a 14 oz Kansas City strip but was served a 14 oz ribeye. I was so confused and I have brain disease but my husband was as confused as I was so that spoke volumes. The server sternly told me that because I ordered a 14 oz Kansas City strip, the Kansas City strip doesn’t come in 14 oz. Okay, great. Why didn’t the server tell me this when I ordered it?! It gave him the right to automatically give me a ribeye?! One, I was so bored with the physically huge menu and waiting for him to take our order that I tried to memorize my order and put my menu away. Two, I personally don’t like ribeye but sucked it up any way because I was famished at this point of the night and I honestly didn’t want to send anything back for fear of retaliation. Not only did I get served the wrong steak but I was missing my side of wild mushrooms and all of our sides were incorrect. Those that ordered loaded baked potatoes didn’t receive it. Another issue was getting steak sauce. The steak sauce should’ve gone out with our food as it was requested when we ordered. We have to ask at least 3-4 times for steak sauce. By the time it came out, we were almost done with our meals. I just didn’t understand his lack of attention to our orders. It was like he was doing us a favor by being our server , yet, he was not doing a good job at his job. It was obnoxiously inconvenient to be at a STEAKHOUSE that is quite upscale and pricey but didn’t have their act together. It was very loud in the corner. Drinks took a long time but were very good. Spicy margaritas were delicious. Crab cake is very good. Steak tasted great but would’ve been better if I had the right cut I ordered. Unfortunately, they missed the mark on service and it’s too bad. Our server didn’t even bring our food out. Individuals helping him did more for our table than he did. I wish I had a better experience as we frequent this establishment often but after this visit, things will come to a halt. We spent $659 without tip and still tipped generously. Honestly, I’ve had better service at Longhorns & Outback and for a fraction of the price. Very disappointing visit.

I recently dined at J. Gilbert’s in Glastonbury, CT on August 15, 2023, around 7 PM. As a solo diner who frequents restaurants multiple times a week, I decided to give J. Gilbert’s a try for the first time, despite being a lifelong Connecticut resident. The entrance area was surprisingly packed for a non-holiday weekday evening, and while the hour-long wait for a table was slightly off-putting, I found a comfortable bar seat within about 5 minutes. The initial impression was positive as a bar waitress greeted me within 5 minutes of seating and took my drink order promptly. I had perused the menu earlier, so I was ready to place my order right away. I opted for the Shrimp Durango to start, followed by the center cut filet Mignon with citrus garlic broccolini and wild mushrooms, and berries & cream for dessert. While waiting for my appetizer, I realized there was no cell reception, a common issue in the area. After some phone struggles, I managed to get the Wi-Fi password from a bartender, which helped me stay connected. The appetizer itself was a highlight, being both delicious and satisfying. However, the main course experience had its downsides. Understandably, the restaurant was bustling, causing a slight delay in the arrival of my meal. Unfortunately, when it finally came, the steak was medium-well instead of the requested medium, and both the steak and broccolini had a slightly burnt side. This was disappointing, especially considering the price point. The lack of timely refills for my beverage added to the inconvenience. What stood out most was the lack of attention from my waitress during the steak dinner. It's unclear if this was intentional, but as an observant diner, I couldn't help but notice. Another peculiar observation was that every time a course was brought out, the waitress would place an updated check in front of me. I looked around the fully packed bar & noticed I was the only person with a check placed in an empty glass. This happened three times. This was unusual and left me wondering whether my appearance influenced the assumption that I might be unfamiliar with the price point. It's worth noting that I'm a black woman in my late 20s dressed in business casual attire. Feeling singled out was not a pleasant experience. The dessert, berries & cream, was decent but took longer to arrive than promised. My bill amounted to approximately $87, and I left a $20 tip, understanding the challenges of the service industry. Unfortunately, the waitress didn't ask if I wanted change, and this oversight, along with being left to conclude the meal experience on my own after payment, added to my mixed feelings about the service. Will I give J. Gilbert’s another chance? Perhaps. I might try again on a quieter weekday evening to see if the experience improves.

Went here to celebrate a birthday, never been and was recommended from a friend and said it's one of the best steakhouses in the state. Had my hopes up but they fell flat. Staff: The staff is fantastic, superb dining experience and very friendly. Our waitress poured our wine for us and knew exactly when to check up on us, and knew when not to (when we were clearly deep in a conversation and enjoying ourselves). Interior/customers: The interior of the building itself is quite upscale and somewhat fancy, but not blazer and suit fancy which is fine. The actual customers are like your typical jock golfers from the area or older folks having a drink after work. Just figured I'd add that, the attire is work casual/collared shirt khakis type (but wear what you want!). Lastly, the most important thing, the food: The bread they serve with the 2 butters is quite good, a good entry to the real meal. Prices are absurd for the quality and quantity. Lobster Mac and cheese with almost no lobster in it for another $6 on top of the entree, really? $5.5 for a small skillet of mushrooms with truffle oil? Really? I got the 10oz steak medium rare, au gratin potatoes and the Mac and cheese. The potatoes felt almost homemade, easily the best part of the dish. The Mac and cheese was soupy and lacked lobster, you could barely tell there was any. Someone else also ordered it with me, same experience. You could get an equivalent with your Kraft Mac and cheese box if you add extra water at the end. The steak, medium rare, was rubbery and actually really tough. Shockingly, the other person who ordered medium got my steak and I got his, his was also rubber to cut but both looked cooked to the degree it should've been (aside from the swapped steaks). The wood fired touch to the steak was very pleasant and easy to enjoy the aroma and smokey flavoring. Other than that, it's a typical steak, nothing special. Drinks: Wine is very overpriced, and so are most shots, a markup of about 60% or so expect at least $17.5 for a shot. Needless to say they have a fancier selection, but the price is still confusingly high. Dessert: Probably the most redeeming part of our experience. They have some of the best desserts for sure, and are worth it. We got a carrot cake and the chocolate fudge delight (can't recall the name of it). Overall, it's a very overpriced dining experience with elegant service, upscale interior with mediocre/goodish food. Maybe it was a miss that time, but I don't think I'd go back again.
