We visited on a Thursday night at 6:30. There were 4 of us. We we're literally the only table in the dining room and the outside area was dead as well. I can't even begin to express how poorly the staff is trained in basic hospitality service.
Our server kept disappearing for long stretches. On one stop by our table, I asked if we could get our water glasses refilled. She came back with a full carafe and filled my glass half way, my wife's glass almost half way and did't top off the other two glasses. I asked what they consider medium-rare is and the reply was "a perfect medium-rare" - not really an answer, but it was a confident enough answer to persuade me to get the $36 rib-eye. When the meals came, they were dropped off and the server was gone instantly. No "Can I get you anything else?", no "Would you like another drink?". I wanted salt, pepper and steak sauce and proceeded to wait nearly 10 minutes before I had to flag down another server and ask. Oh, and by the way, they don't have steak sauce. I don't mean they were out - I mean they don't carry steak sauce.
So, I've finally got my salt and pepper and my "perfect" medium-rare steak is perfectly well done. To be fair, this thing is 1/4" thick at the most so there's really no way you could cook it medium rare, but it would have been nice for the server to inform me of that before ordering. So, I waited another 5 minutes before I found someone who could find our server for us. When she came back, I showed her that the steak was not cooked correctly. She apologized and said she'd get me another one. It was at this point that I expressed my dissatisfaction to her about our entire experience so far and she asked if I'd like to speak to a manager, to which I said yes.
So nearly 10 minutes later, Daphne arrived at the table with a new steak and said she'd wait until I cut into it before leaving. I asked if she was a manager and she said "yes, one of them". I asked why I had to wait 10 minutes for her to come over and explained how poorly the night had been going.
Now, let me just mention that I have nearly 20 years experience in all areas of restaurant operations. In all kinds of types of establishments. I've worked in every position, managed every part of the house, been a GM and a consultant.
So Daphne tells us that our server is actually very busy because she has other customers at the bar area. Well, there were only two other tables with customers at them, which would make for a total of 3 tables - - that's not a lot of tables for even a new server. And, the bar tables weren't having dinner, just drinks.
Anyway, I cut open my steak in front of Daphne and it was raw. Daphne audibly gasped when she saw it. She asked if I wanted another one and I said no thank you, and told her I was all set and that we'd just like the check. She said she'd take the steak off the bill (of course she would, it wasn't what I ordered and I didn't eat it). She didn't offer another round of drinks, no dessert, nothing. It was clear she had no management training and that no one there had any training in how to handle customer complaints.
So, after waiting another 5 minutes we had to flag down another server to get our waitress because she hadn't come over with the check yet.
In all, the service was terrible, the food was very overrated ($36 for a poorly cooked razor thin piece of meat). Rooftop 120 lost the food cost of two steaks and the repeat business of 4 patrons, but more than that, they are now getting the poor word of mouth of my review. No wonder we were the only people...
Read moreThis is a very weirdly posh place. We went in thinking it'd be a moderately classy/upscale restaurant and when we got there it was like this fake California style rich person decor thrown up all over the walls and tables, like somebody got confused between edgy and modern. Red snakeskin wallpaper by the bathroom, gold marble by the main dining, fake plant backdrop in the entry.. oh and they had a dress code for guests. Just a strange mishmash of ideas. Well, we had a reservation and thought we'd give it a try cause we were there already. We were greeted by a very drunk and very large group of mostly college girls, who appeared to be finishing up- but stayed loudly shouting and having shots and talking about he said she said and were still having fits of drama and laughing until after we were gone. Our server Kendra relieved us with a down to earth attitude for a while but the whole atmosphere ended up changing things down the road. I went with her off menu suggestion and got a spicy Thai chicken sandwich and a side of sweet potato tater tots. My S.O. got chicken tacos and we shared calamari as well as crispy shrimp tacos. The chicken sandwich wasn't great, the chicken itself tasted like weird fry oil and the thai sauce was very very very sweet. We each took a bite and I later ordered the salmon, subtly adding in that the sandwich was too sweet for me and I might get it boxed. I was pretty shy to mention anything but my S.O. said she'd probably comp part of it and take it away if I ordered the salmon anyway. She did not. Oh well. The tacos were decent, they are the kind you get in Cali where it's very light and not really like a taco. Good though. The chipotle aioli was nice. The calamari was super rubbery and barely warm like it had been cooked many hours ago. The spicy marinara was great though and helped get us over the texture.. Sweet potato tots are good. The salmon was AWESOME and fries were ok but broccoli was visibly burnt brown and dry in several spots. We had the caramel brownie cheesecake and the seven layer chocolate cake as well. I'd go for the seven layer if you come here. Drinks are the main redeeming factor. Between the two of us we had 2 Juicy beer, Old fashioned, Strawberry Fields and Rooftop Cosmo. They were all pretty good. But for the most part? I'd say save your money unless you're here just for drinks in the outdoor seating. We couldn't eat outside since it had started raining shortly...
Read moreThe server in training was great & helpful, but the manager horrible. Nasty attitude and unprofessional. The pitcher margarita was brought back due to being weak; filled with ice and the cups filled with ice to the brim. Very watered down and sweet, couldn’t even taste the liquor. We informed the server and they brought the pitcher to the bar then moments later returned with the same pitcher stating the bartender couldn’t take it back and brought 3 oz of liquor for us to put in a pitcher. That doesn’t make sense. We asked for the manager; Kara was on at the time due to the main manager being away. She was rude, not understanding or accommodating. My party and myself come from a restaurant background and her restaurant etiquette was not welcoming and didn’t make the customer feel welcomed in this establishment. When we explained the issues she acted as if she couldn’t comprehend that the we weren’t satisfied with the drink due to it, not tasting like it had liquor in it. She took the pitcher away and brought it back to the bar and the server returned to the table and stated that it will be taken off of our bill. Another drink was ordered and again it was not good; you couldn’t taste the liquor and it was too sweet. Once we received the bill we were still charged for one drink due to a person drinking half a cup. We’ve then again asked for the manager and explained the issue and she was not accommodating. Her lack of communication was the issue. She didn’t state we be charged for one drink and left it upon a server who was in training to deal with the matter and they stated the entire pitcher would be removed and didn’t state we’d be charged for one drink from that. She did not takeoff the margarita that we were charged for; one person from the party only drank half. My experience was horrible and I wouldn’t recommend. Its wasn’t a welcoming...
