We were looking forward to visiting, newly opened, Yellowtail since our neighborhood sushi restaurant, Sakana closed. We arrived about 5:30pm. The restaurant has a really fun mural on the wall and was a bright atmosphere. The look is great. There was no sign saying to wait to be seated or to sit ourselves. There was a server leaning against the sushi bar holding menus. I asked him if we were to seat ourselves? He said, yes anywhere. We had our choice as we were the only ones there when we arrived. The menu choices looked great and they have a nice variety. The server brought out waters to us, but took one back because the rim of the glass was dirty with food. Ok that can happen. Especially things may not go well when first opened. We placed our order. I noticed that the plates on the table one look a little dirty. I turned it over and was taken aback about how filthy it was on the bottom of the plate. Nasty. I showed it to a female server and she didn’t even say a word about it. The male server brought out a new plate. I asked him if he saw how dirty the plate was? His words were not, “I’m sorry”. He said, “you have to understand that we brought over old plates from the other restaurant.” I said, what was on the bottom of the plate had nothing to do with being old, it had to do with being dirty. We decided to leave. Dirty glass, filthy plate, a server who was indifferent to our first impression. It looks like from other reviews the food is great. Unfortunately, we will never know because of...
Read moreI have been coming to Sakana for over 10 years always been super impressed with the quality of raw seafood, service, variety of dishes offered. It was closed down for a while and has since then been bought by yellowtail. Definitely not the same quality of dishes served. I have always been a fan of Sakana’s Baked scallop roll and I ordered that today. It is 100% not to the quality of Sakana. The rolls themselves were about half the size, maybe a quarter inch wide and you can tell that the topping that was placed on top of it was very sparse and purposely made to stretch the spread out to make it seem like it covered the top of the rolls on bottom. I also ordered Ikura salmon, eggs, just about the whole piece of seaweed was filled with rice and a very thin layer of eggs placed on top, also squeezed so tight together that it was just like a skinny oval. Again, nowhere near the way Sakana would serve it to you full of eggs And like a round roll. I don’t hate this place, but definitely not the fan that I was of Sakana having gone there for over 10 years and traveling from Cave Creek to there often along with going there for lunch being it is not too far from my workplace. Will not be my go to spot but may...
Read moreFirst I want to say that I am currently pregnant so for those who are also struggling with the "all I want is sushi but I'm pregnant" issue, this is for you. I also have Celiac so eating gluten free sushi isn't always easy nor is it always good. I called Yellowtail Sushi up on my way home from the OB and the woman who answered the phone assured me there was no gluten in the sushi rice and in the vegetarian roll. I had no idea what a Japanese pickle was but it was listed as an ingredient in the vegetarian roll. The woman on the phone said it was some kind of radish so I was expecting something crunchy. Anyway, I got my roll, or four of them, but added cream cheese, and let me just say, its amazing. The radish is like soft and pickled maybe? I don't know exactly what it is but the texture reminds me of smoked salmon. It is delicious and its even better with Bachan's gluten free Japanese BBQ sauce, a sweet brown sauce. I told my husband we shouldn't have stopped here because it's not super close to our house and I'm now going to crave this roll for the next...
