My family came in around 10:45 and the restaurant had more empty tables than sat, most people were at the bar and we stood at the door for nearly 10 minutes while 2 separate servers walked in our direction, saw us, rolled their eyes and walked away without saying a word or acknowledging us whatsoever ever. My father ended up going up to the bar and asking that same server if we seat ourselves or how it works where so very rudely responded "yeah no we've got a hostess she's just very very busy"... the restaurant was over half empty just in the front portion. We were finally seen by the hostess who asked us to wait a moment while she threw some tables together where another employee who suddenly had time for us came over, and in front of us loudly stated "um aren't they supposed to be following you" as if we were stupid. Once we were seated there were three other tables in the section and two servers on duty, our server came over and got our drinks over which went fine. we got our drinks and my nephew who is 7 did not like his chocolate milk, I turned to the server who heard him say he wasn't a fan and she looked at me with an attitude and before I could say anything she reluctantly said "What does he want something else" and I said "yes an apple juice" she brought it out and took our food order. By this time there were about 5 tables in our area, again with 2 servers back there. My dad ordered the Corned Beef Hash and my mom ordered the pancake platter with well done bacon. I myself got the giant cinnamon roll as that is what I always get and its amazing. It took our server nearly 30 minutes to let my dad know that not only are they out of corned beef hash but that they had been all week. He ended up getting the same thing as my mom in the end. Once the food came out nearly an hour after we ordered I was confused, my cinnamon roll was nearly half the size that it was when I got it back in October and the icing looked like water and it had been poured only in the center so the entire outside of the roll was dry. I asked the server if I could get some more icing as it was dry to which she got very upset and said "well then Ill just go get you a new one" and reached for my plate I said "no I don't want to wait for a new one I just want more icing" she continued to reach for my plate and ignore what I said so I gave up and handed it to her where I stated my above statement once again. my dad piped up and said "can't she just get some more icing?" She reluctantly dropped my food back in front of me and said "SURE" and walked off. When she got back it looked different, I asked why the icing was so runny if it was supposed to be cream cheese frosting to e=which she responded "Well its PROBABLY changed since the LAST TIME YOU WERE HERE... it changed like 2 or so years ago" and I said "I was here in October?" to which she responded "Yeah actually it was about 5 months ago, its not cream cheese anymore its homemade now" and I said, "It still says its cream cheese icing on the menu though (confused)." and she said "OKAY Well its not anymore" and walked away from our table. My moms bacon was genuinely BLACK it was so burnt and the pancakes tasted like straight up cooked flour, my cinnamon roll tasted like it was drenched in water the icing was so bad and the server proceeded to walk past our table 3 separate times clearly noticing that no-one was eating their food except the 7 year old and all she did was give us the side eye and continue to ignore us. About 10 minutes later my dad approached her and requested the manager. She ignored him and instead went up to her friend (who was the female who ignored us at the door earlier) and began talking to her instead of grabbing the manager. We ended up having to ask another server to grab her for us. The manager Erin came to our table and heard our complaints and said she would take food off the bill, never offered us any other food and brought the bill over without us asking for it. My mom and I left hungry and were basically pushed out of the restaurant. I will NEVER...
Read moreLet me start by saying my husband is in the ANG stationed in Grand Rapids. We spend ALOT of time there. Sundance is a little gem we discovered a few years ago, and we try to go at least once everytime we are in town. We went there on Friday morning March 8, 2024 with my daughter and her boyfriend. We arrived at about 10:10am. Stood at the door waiting to be seated for over 10 minutes, several servers and bartenders looked at us and went on their way none of them acknowledging us. Finally after 10 minutes my husband went up to the bar to ask if we were supposed to seat ourselves, and a VERY rude server who was just standing around talking told him that there was a hostess but she was very busy and he would have to wait. There were about 6 tables in the whole place with people at them. About 10 minutes later a hostess came up and took us to our seats. Server was quick only taking about 2 minutes to get our drink order. Which FYI they no longer have fresh squeezed juice. She came back quickly with our drinks to take our order, we all ordered the pancake platters (pancakes, bacon, and eggs.) Except my husband ordered corn beef hash, and my daughter go a giant cinnamon roll. This was about 10:30 at this point. About a half an hour later the server came up and told my husband that they were out of corn beef hash. Which is about 5 things on the menu. She proceeded to tell him that they have been out all week. (Should have said that from the beginning) so he ordered the pancake platter also. Another half hour (11:35) went by and they finally brought our food out. I asked for crispy bacon because I don't like it limp. They forgot my sons syrup, my back was BURNT I mean BLACK. My daughters cinnamon roll was easily half the size it Normally is, and was dry, with some sort of watery glaze on the plate for it. Her favorite part was the cream cheese icing which them menu sid it was. Pancakes were doughy and undercooked. My daughter asked the server about the frosting on the cinnamon roll and she said that the chef was now making his own it was no longer cream cheese, to which my daughter stated that it still says cream cheese on the menu, the server promptly rolled her eyes and said oh well it isn't anymore, and walked away. After 10 minutes of our server walking by and not stopping my husband went up to the bar to ask for a manager, I asked again another server after 10 more minutes. Finally about noon the manager came out and we told her about the issues, no one took more then 2 bites of their food. The manager smelled like she had been hot boxing on her car for an hour, honestly the smell was making me sick to my stomach. She took off some of our food and never even offered an apology. So at 12:30 after being there 2 1/2 hours we had to pay $50 for food no one ate and had to go somewhere else and actually eat. I will NEVER return and will not recommend to any of our friends. The place has really...
Read moreWe have eaten at the downtown Sundance Grill and Bar a few times before and it had been a pleasant enough experience. Our last two visits, however, were not pleasant, and yesterday's visit was particularly disappointing.
We went downtown to enjoy the art museum and get dinner. Roam was busy and could not accommodate seven guests so we walked over to Sundance. We were greeted right away, but the greeter seemed unprepared and (unlike previous times) not in a particularly good mood, even though it was not busy at 5:00 pm. Our server was nice and mostly responsive to our needs. Indeed, but for our server's efforts, this review would likely be a two-star review. The accommodations were fine as well; it's a nice space in a nice old building.
Our food came in a timely fashion, but it was far below the standard that we have come to expect when eating out. The only meal that was properly prepared was my burger and fries. Four of the seven meals were already cold. My daughter was so visibly upset while trying to eat her meal that I took a bite and I found it to be completely unacceptable. The pork was watery, undercooked, and ice cold. I spoke to the server about that meal and he politely offered to replace it, but my daughter was no longer in the mood to eat there. The server removed it from the bill.
My wife was also very unhappy with her meal. The fish tacos were cold and her guacamole had the consistency of soup. She prepares similar cuisine at home and so felt cheated by the apparent lack of effort by the kitchen. The southwest cuisine overall was so unpalatable that only one of my children finished their meal and no one wanted a carry out container to take anything home. My wife wanted to speak to someone about our experience, but we decided at that point that we had wasted too much time at the Sundance. We decided to cut our visit downtown short and go home so those who were still hungry could eat.
We enjoy the downtown experience and an important part of our experience is patronizing the restaurants. And we like to rotate restaurants. The visit to the Sundance Grill, however, put a pall over an otherwise nice visit downtown. Because this was our second time being disappointed, it will no longer be in...
