Not as Good as It Used to Be We visited Palace of India during our recent trip to Michigan, having had a great experience there two years ago. Unfortunately, this time the food and overall experience didn’t live up to our previous visit. Last time, the owners personally took care of our table, and the food was exceptional. This time, while the food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as great as we remembered. We started with Paneer Tikka and asked our server if we could get Nimbu Pani (lemon water), which isn’t on the menu. At first, he said it wouldn’t be a problem, but after speaking with the cook, he came back and told us they didn’t have lemons. This was confusing since they served lemon slices alongside the Paneer Tikka. It felt like they were making excuses, which didn’t sit well with us. For the main course, we ordered Dal Makhani, Malai Kofta, and Matar Paneer. Out of those, only the Dal Makhani was really good. The other dishes were okay, but nothing special. We also ordered the bread basket, and to finish, we had an order of Gulab Jamun, which was decent. Overall, Palace of India is still a good spot in Grand Rapids, but it’s not as impressive as it was two years ago. The food quality seemed to have dipped, and the service was a bit inconsistent. Hopefully, they can get back to the high standard we experienced during our first visit.

All the negative reviews about this place make me think of those websites where you can buy negative reviews for your competitors and good reviews for your own store. Sure. I might not have huge amounts of experience eating at an Indian restaurants, but I do have experience eating some of the best food in Grand Rapids. This place is wonderful. I can’t recommend it enough. I try and go out of my way to convert people who have never tried or hated Indian food. Most people feel like me. This place is beyond amazing. If you’re nervous about trying new places a good starter dish I would recommend to anyone with a fair complexion ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) is the chicken korma and cheese naan. Perfect for us ‘Merica types. Scoop the rice soaked chicken korma onto that buttery cheese naan and let your tastebuds go on the ride of their lives. Now I would like to point out the staff could be a bit more attentive while you’re eating in, but that’s why I order out baby.

We went to this place expecting a lunch buffet. When we got to the door, we were additionally encourage to because there are clear lunch buffet hours on the door, and we were within them. When we went in, there was no buffet. I felt a bit lied too, felt as if I was obligated to order food. We did order food, but they got our order wrong, bringing out the wrong vegetarian dish. The food was pretty much expected for an Indian restaurant. I wish my butter chicken had more flavor but that's not really a negative. The big negative was the lack of the buffet even after advertising that they had one. Servers were a bit weird, taking nearly a minute to clean off the dishes from our table even before we were finished eating. But it had a nice atmosphere, pretty looking tables and place settings. It had a wide variety on the menu, and it wouldn't have been a bad experience if I didn't feel like I was being lied to about the buffet.

I wish I could give no star at all.I would never recommend this place for any sort of party or any celebration. Also, Jassi the owner has no courtesy to talk to his customer and no etiquette to talk to women. The way she behaved with my wife that's totally unacceptable. He shouted on my wife and crossed his limit with words .We experienced horrible customer service during our son's birthday party which took place at their banquet hall.Me and my wife went there to discuss for the birthday party menu and detailing about decoration. We paid whatever amount was asked for the entire service and finalized the party. Jassi told us we can call him later to discuss anything related the party and he will also confirm us over the phone when we can be there for decoration. Later I tried to talk to him face to face regarding the event and he said he is busy and can talk only over he phone after 10PM in night. I tried calling him a week before the party, but he did not lift the call. I told my wife to follow up with him. After trying couple of time when my wife could talk to him over the phone, he was still busy to respond back to our queries and said he will call us back but we did not receive any call from him. Just two days before the party, my wife called him to know when to be there for decoration and tried go through the menu so that no confusion arises at last moment. He said he does not have the menu handy with him and can confirm him later. Later in the evening he finally called my wife and stated the menu and there was some miss match so my wife mentioned that and he suddenly became furious.During menu discussion, I asked if he can give any discount he said he can't give any discount as he is not asking much but he will include cold drinks with the menu. I myself wanted to confirm the menu with him before the party and he was always saying he can't have any word face to face and can talk only over the phone. That's when my wife and I tried calling him and finally he reverted back to my wife and when my wife mentioned about the cold drink he started shouting said he won't serve any cold drink and just when my wife tried to remind him, he said " now if your husband says I promised to serve liquor also, that's not feasible..right". My wife was shocked badly and she asked him to mind his language but he kept on shouting and said he is cancelling the party. It was just a day before the Birthday party, knowing our situation, he was trying to be superior. My wife felt so insulted and hurt that she could not talk to him anymore and gave the phone to me and I had a talk with him and he was having the same tone. Finally when he could control his temper and behavior, said we can be there in the morning for decoration.During party, service was not as promised and there was a server(dusky in complexion and short in height) who claimed himself as...

Actually, what spurred me to write this review was that at the end of our service yesterday, I got a box and our server tried to take my leftovers and then got upset when we asked if we could give her three payment methods. Stand-alone this wouldn’t warrant a negative review in my option, but there was a lot of miscommunication in the process of ordering a drink that brought down the whole experience. It’s the main complaint of my review.

Well, I wanted a beer cause it was hot in the restaurant yesterday and the AC seemed to be completely out. When I asked for the beer list, server asked 3-4 times to tell her what beer I wanted to order. Eventually she grabbed a little beer list on a silver stand, set it down and quickly bolted away. While not shy about walking by, which was great, she stared straight ahead without acknowledging me all the way until we received our food. Bussing tables, seating people, and even chasing someone down to return their card (which I thought was very nice) and working hard! But, every time she passed, not acknowledging that I had my ID face up on the table and was waiting to put in my beer order. I even asked to order a beer while she refilled my water and she essentially ignored me and left. I ended up having to ask the cook who brought out our food in order get her attention. Server looked at me really weird when I asked for a Blue Moon, but then she asked me if I wanted her to get me a beer list. This felt really weird since when I had asked for the list 25 minutes ago she tried to take my beer order, and now while ordering a beer after I had gotten my food, she was trying to get me the beer list. When I finally got the dang thing, I received a different beer than I’d even ordered and it came after all the food was dropped. It was cold and delicious though.

I also ordered the big meat platter for dinner and specified that I wanted it brought out as an entree (my two friends each got a korma) and my meal was presented to the group as an appetizer. This was frustrating. All the food was great.

We tipped 25%, but this experience had me reconsidering dining in at this restaurant again. I want to be greeted warmly and I do my best to bring goodwill to my servers. I know it takes hard work to get our meal together and keep us happy, and I want to acknowledge that while also pointing out the customer service aspect is a completely overlooked aspect of my...

For my birthday I wanted Indian food so we found on TripAdvisor that this was the highest rated Indian food in Grand Rapids.

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere is casual, relaxed, and simple to match the price point. There is a large flatscreen behind the bar that plays Bollywood videos. The center room divider, the bar, and the place settings make the restaurant feel higher end than my $12 Butter Chicken. The restaurant was mostly empty on the very snowy day we dined here. 4.2/5

Staff:

We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server took an average time to come greet us. Chips and sauces came out quickly after we ordered. Our food came out hot and extra rice was quickly served after it was requested. Before we left we joked around a bit with our server which he was very well mannered at receiving. Service was never intrusive and always on time. 5/5

Food:

I had butter chicken and my husband had Tikka Masala which came with Basmati rice, both were delicious. The rice was perfectly fluffy. The chicken did have one small piece of grizzle in it, but otherwise it was tender dark meat in a buttery sauce. When I reheated my meal the next day it was not liquidy coming out of the refrigerator, which means it was truly butter. YUM!

We had a bread on the side (Onion Paratha) which I thought sounded delicious with cilantro, onion and potato. It wasn't very cilantro-y and was a very soft limp flatbread, I would probably not get that particular kind again, but it was okay.

I had a mango Lassi to drink and it was amazing! just like drinking a mango!

4.8/5

Cleanliness:

The restaurant felt clean. They had a brick wall smashed in from a car accident, but they had it very well sealed and taken care of, it was...
