Update: I am now here every few days, as often as I am in town basically, so I can say that the service and food is consistently good and friendly! I usually am so excited to dig in that I forget to take pictures of the food, sorry... Lol .... This was my second time here, and the food was as good as I expected! Very friendly staff, large portions (though the mango lassi was disappointingly small *sadface *, but it was really good! :D ), and quality food.
I sat by the front counter, and enjoyed listening to them talk and sing as they made the food, makes me wish I knew the language lol.
The sign says closed Sunday, but the closed is crossed out, and I asked, and today was Sunday, so I can confirm they are now open on Sundays too! (5pm to 10 pm)
If you want something cool to balance the spicier stuff, get a side of Raita, a very yummy yogurt based cooling dish, and ask for it to come early.
They had the A/C turned pretty cold, so plan on having a jacket with you, even if it a hot day.
This visit I had Samosas and Onion Bajhi (which I heard about years ago from BOFH stories, and have always wanted to try to see why they were worth physical comedic violence... I now understand! ;), with Saag Paneer and Tandoori Aloo (which comes in a sizzling cast iron skillet), and of course Garlic Naan, with a side of Raita, and Mango Lassi. And of course I end up with leftovers to take with me when I get back in my semi...
Read moreWe are very much into Indian Food and the food at A Taste of India Grants Pass is pretty decent in comparison to other Indian restaurants, but the place is pretty "tore back" - literally. No atmosphere what so ever. Tables were plain and well worn, seats had tears in the material and even springs poking out of them (I actually caught my pants on one as I was sitting and it ripped a hole in my pants - which our Waiter witnessed). Floors have no coverings and are worn, curtains are old and dirty, there was no music playing - literally nothing to look at while waiting for our food. We almost left, after walking in and seeing the condition of the place, but decided to stay. The food was pretty good, I had the Chicken Tikka Masala and my Wife had the Navrattan Korma (which is our standard order), along with a plain Naan. Our Waiter sat behind the cash register instead of bringing our drinks out while waiting - I got up to ask and saw him scrolling on his phone - hence the Service rating. When I go out to eat, food is only part of my experience, and this place has some work to do in those other areas. Overall, if I were to order again from here, it would be to go. BTW - While the Waiter noted that I had torn my pants on the exposed spring and even mentioned it to one of the other workers and pointed out the actual spring that caused the damage, we were not compensated in any way - not even a discount...
Read moreMy recent visit to this Indian restaurant left me with a mixed bag of impressions. Sampling the shrimp biryani, fish tikka, and naan, the overall experience earns a respectable 4 out of 5.
The shrimp biryani, while okay, didn't quite match up to my expectations. It resembled more of yellow rice mixed with shrimp rather than the flavorful biryani I had hoped for. It's a decent dish, but there's certainly room for improvement in capturing the true essence of this classic.
On a brighter note, the fish tikka served in a frying pot was a standout. It boasted good flavors, showcasing the chef's culinary skills. This dish was a highlight, and I appreciated the unique presentation that added to the overall appeal.
What truly saved the dining experience was the commendable customer service. The welcoming atmosphere and the friendly staff made a positive impact. Their warm reception added a pleasant touch to the meal and contributed to the overall enjoyment of the evening.
In summary, while the shrimp biryani fell short of expectations, the standout fish tikka and the welcoming ambiance make this restaurant worth considering. With a bit of fine-tuning, it has the potential to offer an even more satisfying culinary experience. I look forward to seeing how this establishment evolves...
