Review of Ray Rays in Granville (Take-Out Experience)
I recently had a take-out experience at Ray Rays in Granville, and overall, it was a bit of a mixed bag. While the food itself has been consistently excellent and tasted great, there were a few issues that I encountered which affected my overall satisfaction.
During my last order, I requested two pounds of pulled pork with the buns on the side. Unfortunately, when I received my order, they had only provided three buns for the two pounds of pork. This seemed like an oversight on their part, as it didn't adequately accommodate the amount of meat I had ordered. It would have been more convenient if they had included enough buns to match the quantity of pulled pork.
In my most recent order, I decided to try 1 ½ pounds of pulled pork. However, I noticed that their menu seems to consistently change, and now the pulled pork comes topped with coleslaw. While this might be a personal preference, I believe that when someone orders a large amount of meat, it would be more practical to provide the coleslaw in a separate container. This way, it can be easily shared among multiple people without mixing it with the meat.
One aspect that I found frustrating was the need to thoroughly check the order before leaving the restaurant. Despite requesting buns and extra BBQ sauce on the side, I discovered upon arriving home (which was a 45-minute drive away) that there was no BBQ sauce in the bag, nor were there any buns. This lack of attention to detail (or special requests) was disappointing, as it meant we couldn't fully enjoy our meal as intended.
Despite these issues, it's worth noting that the food itself was consistently excellent and tasted great. Ray Rays definitely knows how to prepare delicious pulled pork. However, the restaurant should work on improving the attention to detail and consistency in their take-out orders. Ensuring that all requested items are included and considering the practicality of certain toppings can go a long way in enhancing the overall...

Cuban with Potato Salad (German'ish style - which is strange coming from a BBQ joint). The Cuban was pretty good and was solid amount of size and meats given that most places don't pile on a Cuban. The Potato Salad was okay - nothing to write home about and the portion was small (I replaced this with the chips as the default).
(2) Whole "Hawg" with Mac n Cheese and Cornbread and one other side I sampled the Hawg and thought it was subpar. First they create it into a ball and before that squeeze out the juice assuming to not let it run onto the place but then this creates a underwhelming taste and it must mashed up meat. One bite of Mac N Cheese and again - wasn't the best. The two that received these dishes had similar comments and didn't finish their food. Cornbread was good - not great but overall a decent size and taste.
Another Whole "Hawg" with Lexington Slaw and Cornbread and Mac N Cheese. I sampled a bit of the slaw and immediately thought that isn't slaw - that is lettuce with some odd taste - wasn't good at all.
Two cokes, beer (good selection), glass of Wine = around $100 which is pricey. Sides were from Ice cream scoopers so size is not that much as well.
Overall - decent place. I am not sure about the rave reviews that others received and I didn't get the Ribs or Beef Brisket (was out) so maybe a second try is needed but it's probably at best a 3 given nobody was really thrilled and the cost comparison is iffy.
Side note they have outside seating BUT DO NOT SIDE NEAR THE NORTH END OF THE OUTSIDE AREA. There is a black tube that is connected to the outside where water is running through that will splash you if you eat at one of the north end tables. Sadly I think it's a result of the restrooms flushing and really needs...
Read moreNew to Granville and I wanted it to be awesome! But... Ray Ray's has a very cool atmosphere and friendly staff. The food...not the best. The entire set up is not conducive to receiving quality food. We ordered a sandwich with sides, Meat +3 (Brisket) and ribs with sides. The Brisket is cut in front of you and given to you at the cashier's station. While in line, you pick out the sides while heading to said cashier. It was busy when we were there and the line was slow. After paying, , take your sides and find a table. They will bring the sandwich, and the ribs out when ready. Other diners in your party that chose brisket are waiting for your food or are eating without you. Well if you wait, the brisket and sides will be cold. If you eat them hot, you'll be done with the small portions before the other meat comes to the table. The smoked meats were NOT exceptional. The brisket was fibrous. The ribs were some kind of cut I've never seen before.and were gelatinous with fat and cartilage. Not much meat on these. The sides we tried were all ok, nothing to write home about. The sauce had a bit too much molasses and vinegar flavor for me. The cornbread is the star here. Very dense, moist, buttery and just the right sweetness. Perfect! Ray Rays just opened, so I'm hopeful that things will improve as the details get ironed out. I think old fashioned table service would remove some of these issues. For now, I'll pass. Maybe stop by in...
