We visited This location at Wood Crossing on February 23. We were in town visiting from Charleston and were actually going to go on Saturday night, but discovered they closed at 7 PM. Based on the reviews, we were excited about eating there, and the service and atmosphere did not disappoint at all. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the cost was inexpensive. Now the reason for my one star rating is because they must have gave the spice cabinet the day off. The food came out, piping hot, but there wasn’t even a pinch of seasoning in anything except for the sweet potato soufflé. My fiancé had the pork chop and was highly disappointed, I had the chicken and was highly disappointed as well. The greens were recommended to us by our server and it tasted like they were simply boiled in water only. We also tried the namesake and after our visit, I saw in another review that the fried green tomatoes were hard and I have to agree with that assessment. It’s as if they simply put batter on the tomato and fried it long enough for the batter to get hard and then served it. The tomato was so tough that I thought I was eating a pear.
I am not one to usually write a bad review unless it’s absolutely necessary, but with all the good reviews, this place got I don’t want someone else to be misled like we were. If you are used to southern soul food, where you have memories of your grandmother or mother in the kitchen, sweating and working over a hot stove to serve up some delicious food for their family, this place will definitely not bring back...
Read moreI really enjoyed my dinner here. I ordered the baked chicken & rice with mushroom sauce, fried green tomatoes and sweet potato souffle, and it came with a biscuit, a cornbread muffin(?) and drink...for $12 and change. I'm not sure where people eat that think this is expensive...around Greenville, that's a lunch price for a full dinner.
The food was out surprisingly fast. Like...ordered, pulled out my phone, launched an app and pow Shirley was back with my dinner. Speaking of, Shirley was a great waitress. Attentive, friendly and fast.
The food. The best I can say is that I could've sworn my wife was back in the kitchen cooking my dinner. That's a compliment, because my wife's a great cook. It really was like eating a home-cooked meal...nothing was too salty, nothing was too bland, it was just...good.
If I'd have been expecting faux-gourmet buzzword stew -- you know, "mango habanero chutney," or "tequila lime aioli," or "whipped goat cheese" or any of the things that sound impressive and taste like elitism -- I'd have been disappointed, I guess. But this isn't a downtown "bistro," (why does everyplace snooty call itself a bistro?) it's an independent Southern restaurant that serves scratch-made comfort food.
And with the homey Christmas decorations, Christmas music in the background, and a meal that tasted like my wife made it...it was...

Our lids for the cups did not fit at all so the kids spilled their lemonade. I had to ask 2 other waitresses for plates bc once Marie took our order she didn’t come back to the table until we had already gotten our own Togo boxes. Not to mention the young waitresses had on t shirts with running track shorts on that looked like underwear in other words it was like they T-shirt was they night shirt very inappropriate for small children to see let long on Easter Sunday this was my first time ever eating here. I asked for honey Marie asked was I sure bc it’s expensive looked at the receipt it was only 50 whole cents I will not be returning to this location horrible birthday dinner experience very disappointed and my rice was dry with gravy white gravy on it I went back to leave a tip an heard Marie talking smack an complaining I started not to leave a tip bc you complaining about a table you...
