Hits and Misses. To be fair, I haven't been here for dinner yet. The steak looks amazing. Service has been warm and gracious. I like everyone's laidback and familiar demeanor. It suits them well. There is some great baking going on here. YES to the cake any day. I got to sample the strawberry shortcake, the Hershey's chocolate, and the Pineapple Cakes. My least favorite was the Hershey's because it didn't have a lot of chocolate flavor. The breakfast biscuits are wonderful. The perfect fluffy biscuit with sausage and eggs. They use a really good sausage for breakfast, and they give you a nice big serving. The pancakes are good. Large, fluffy, and cake-y, in texture. I prefer a smaller pancake that's light and slightly fluffy with crispy, buttery edges. This one is very dense. I ended up using them to make a homemade MCGriddle with my leftovers. The last time I went , we got the lunch buffet. I believe it was $14. The meats were good. Ribs, fried chicken had a pretty golden crust, but not super flavorful, the fish - also fried to perfection. Ribs are good but not super tender, and hamburger steaks were great. The chicken and dumplings were ok, but bland. I realize that they may be catering to a lot of customers who can't do salt, in which case they should at least make sure the broth has enough onion, celery, bay leaf, etc to help it out. My main problem was with the sides. I was shocked that a restaurant that bakes scratch made cakes and biscuits would serve boxed mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes from a can! Ew. The mashed potatoes were inedible. It's like they may have mixed boxed with real. The flavor was off putting. The texture was heavy and dense. No salt, pepper, or butter could be detected. They had a strange after taste. The sweet potatoes (candied yams) came from a can. The cabbage was good, and the green beans, though probably canned were pretty good. They weren't mushy and overcooked. So good on them for that. The MAC AND CHEESE!! It was awful. It was a bad off brand of boxed macaroni or maybe a cheese sauce powder, baked, like homemade. This also had a strange after taste. I find this very lazy and not worth $14. A place that cooks as well as they do, shouldn't be serving canned and boxed food. My review isn't meant to be cruel, just honest. If you come for home cooking, that's what you want to experience. I'll definitely go back...
Read moreHIGHLY RECOMMEND! I am always looking for a restaurant that gives a diner feel where "real" home cooked style food is served. Seahorse delivered 100%! The prices are also fantastic. My husband had the Friday special shrimp plate with 2 sides. I had the 2 piece white meat fried chicken with 2 sides and an iced tea. We also purchased 6 slices of cake and a banana pudding. Our bill was only $66!
My chicken was perfectly seasoned and fried crispy. It arrived piping hot! My sides of cabbage and mac-and-cheese were good as well. Most places serve flavorless mac-and-cheese that is creamy but watery and flavorless. I get the feeling Seahorse mac-and-cheese was baked, it was rich, thick and flavorful. The cabbage was perfect, tender but not mushy, and also well seasoned. I don't usually order sweet tea when I go to restaurants but I was in the mood for it today so I did and it was really good. It wasn't watered down and wasn't too sweet, it was just right.
My husband loved his shrimp, fried okra, and steak fries.
We got alot of cake but have only tried a few. The texture of the cakes were great in my opinion. I liked the coconut but feel like most of the coconut flavor was coming from the icing and not the cake. I'm not a fan of the pineapple cake but it may have been that the filling and icing was too cold. I'm going to give it another try when it's not straight out of the fridge cold. My husband loved the death by chocolate cake. He especially loved the mini chocolate chips on the icing.
The service was quick and friendly although I could tell they were super busy and were feeling it. All the tables in the main room were full when we arrived and the side rooms started to quickly fill up later. The waitresses kept up with everything and were constantly going from table to table and in and out the kitchen! Please tip these ladies (and gentlemen if there are some) well because they definitely earn it!
10/10 highly recommend if you want a home cooked meal that doesn't break the bank or skimp on...
Read moreShort answer HORRIBLE! I drove from Raleigh to eat with my mom for her 65th birthday and my brother who two days later was having a birthday and we were seated at a round table in the right corner of the restaurant. We were a party of seven. After placing our order around 6pm (the waitress was very nice BTW) we were served at around 7pm were done eating but still enjoying our drinks and chatting. A few minutes after 7pm we were asked by the hostess to leave because the table was reserved for others who were about to arrive. Keep in mind the restaurant on a Saturday night at around 7pm was more empty than full-not a good sign. We did leave and I went back in a few minutes later to run to the restroom before I headed back to Raleigh and noticed people at what was our table but about five people who could have easily fit at another table nearby that was empty. I got back home a few hours later and called the restaurant and spoke to Danny, the manager. His words, "it should have been handled better." DARN TOOTIN it should have been handled better. This is a restaurant that touts "in Jesus' name we pray" on their menu. I bet Jesus would not have asked anybody to leave that was being nice and enjoying time with their relatives sharing a birthday. Now about the food; I ordered grilled lemon pepper salmon-DRY as the Sahara. The "plain" rolls weren't just plain, but plain BLACK as night. The food I feed my dog is better than this place has to offer. I am going to give this place one star only because the waitress was nice; she needs to find a better place to work. Jesus might be on the menu but he is not in the heart's of the management and the hostess who asked us to leave with little reason. Consider...
