Have heard good things, so I will probably give them another shot. But, this visit was not good.
I called ahead since it was Saturday night. The guy that answered the phone said come on in, they had 2 empty tables. I asked if we should get on the list, but he said no need.
When we got there, still had to wait 10 minutes to get seated. Once seated, it took a long time to get drink orders, then the food order. Everyone was still patient, but when it was over an hour and one of the chefs was still not at our table, we were getting upset. This was especially frustrating because people that came after us were being served.
It was finally explained that 2 of the chefs had covid. I get that, but my problem is instead of closing off some tables because they didn't have the staff, they decided to capture all the possible revenue at the expense of the customers. Saying there was no wait was very deceiving. There wasn't a wait for being seated. There was, however, a huge hour and a half wait to actually get food. No one would wait 90 minutes in the lobby for any other restaurant.
To top it off, someone in our party ordered the fish dinner which said in the menu came with orange ruffi and a choice of salmon or walleye. The chef didn't have the ruffi and argued that he didn't have an order in for that. The waiter came over, and they argued about it in front of everyone. Eventually, the dish was placed on the grill; however, they added an extra charge for extra fish even though it was supposed to come with it. After a 2 and a half ordeal, I was too exhausted to even argue. Incidentally, 7-up is on the menu too, but the waiter was surprised and said they don't carry it.
The food was pretty good but not worth the high prices, especially coupled with the...
Read moreBecause it was the 4th of July, most places were either closed or closed early so I thought I'd try this one. NEVER AGAIN! Thinking because it had 4/5 stars it should be good but I neglected to read the reviews, wish I had though. I took my 3 young grandchildren as they'd never been to a Japanese Steak House and they were excited to see all the things I'd told them about from going to other Hibachi places. Not only was there no show, the cook appeared angry completely antisocial and it was quite clear he didn't want to be there. My granddaughters asked him his name about 6 times and he just ignored them. Not only did he just fling the food onto the plates, it splattered and my granddaughter almost got burned. In addition to that when he cooked something, he just threw it on top of the food already there, even when I was in the middle of eating it! I ordered lobster and I had to leave the table for a few minutes and when I returned there was a mess on my plate with a few shrimp and a few small pieces of lobster on top of a slab of butter! So with all of that being said, the food was almost as bad as the person who cooked it. The fried rice (you pay extra for) was dry and had a little egg in it and the only seasoning was way too much salt, and I also ordered a Filet and I'm pretty sure it wasn't, but it was also dry and salty. The kids had chicken and it was really dry too. Also the salad dressing wasn't good and the soup was so so. Needless to say we will NEVER go there again and if you want a Hibachi show and decent food, you won't get it there and if I could give it 0...
Read moreIf you're looking for a hibachi "experience," keep moving. This isn't the place for you.
But if you're like me and prefer to enjoy food when you go out to eat rather than being entertained, then you'll love House of Tokyo. I have had almost every sushi roll on the menu, and every hibachi plate. I would recommend it all.
High quality food (pricey, but worth it on those occasions), but not the best overall service or experience. I eat Japanese food regularly, almost once a week, and I mix it up and go to different locations almost every time. I compare every other Japanese restaurant I try to House of Tokyo, and so far it's still my favorite. Fujiyama and Kabuto are good, and the "hibachi experience" at those particular restaurants is much better, but the food quality is shockingly poor for the price in comparison to House of Tokyo. Unless coerced by the majority of my party, I would never take my business to either of them over House of Tokyo simply because of the superior food quality.
Like I said though, if you're looking for a fun time instead of a quiet, delicious dinner, then move on. It's the tamest hibachi experience you'll probably ever have, but the food – in my humble opinion – is unmatched.
P.S. – the servers and chefs are usually a tad awkward – sometimes you just have to take it with a grain of salt. To me, the food is good enough to make up for their shortcomings in the social...
