We’re blessed with a lot of excellent coffee in the Upstate, so it’s easy for even great shops to slip under the radar—but Flying Fox deserves to be noticed. Their espresso is genuinely top-tier, and their lattes are some of the best I’ve had anywhere in the Greenville area (including the downtown location).
I first found them when they were tucked inside the Cartwright Food Hall in Greer. It took me a minute to figure out where they were (no exterior signage), but once I did, I ended up getting a fantastic mocha and realizing the food hall was actually a great place to post up and work.
In August 2024 they opened their own full café just across the street. Much easier to find now—the whole building is painted in their deep green branding, and the interior has this cozy, darker, almost Coffee-Underground feel to it.
They roast their own beans, which makes a huge difference. The drip coffee is solid and their bagged beans are great for home brewing—but where Flying Fox really shines is espresso. You can actually taste the coffee in their lattes instead of just sugar and syrup, and the quality really does compete with the best local shops.
Outside of espresso drinks, I’d say the quality is still good, even if not top-of-the-top (this is obviously subjective). Their food is a nice complement—nothing on the level of Tandem or Barista Alley, but better than “just something to go with the coffee.” Seasonal drink specials are often clever and worth trying.
Highlights • Atmosphere: dark, artistic, slightly tucked-away vibe — ideal for working • Seating/Wi-Fi: mix of tables and couches, outlets available (Wi-Fi occasionally drops) • Parking: on par with Barista Alley and actually a bit easier • Espresso/lattes: outstanding — their signature roast really stands out • At-home coffee crowd: house-roasted single origins are worth buying
Highly recommend Flying Fox if you care about espresso and want a quieter place...
Read moreVery cute coffee shop. Stopped here after dropping a friend off at the GSP airport on my way back up to CLT. I was really hoping to grab a snack for my drive, but their kitchen stops serving food at 3pm. The food menu did look enticing though. I got an iced vanilla latte with oat milk and it definitely did its job of keeping me up for the remainder of my drive. The barista was so nice and welcoming. There’s plenty of indoor sitting and a couple outdoor tables. My only complaint is that they don’t have a storefront sign, so I honestly had no idea where it was when I driving by. I just trusted the GPS and found a parking spot on the street (I had no problems finding a parking spot on late Saturday afternoon). Then I walked until I could see their name on their door. The Flying Fox is in between a boutique and...
Read moreI was so ecstatic about this place finally opening, and it fully lived up to and exceeded expectations! The service is amazing, everyone is so sweet and personable, and the atmosphere is so cozy!! They've really done incredible things with the space here. And oh my gosh the food was positively DIVINE. I had a Mint Condition to drink, which was absolutely delightful, not a super strong mint and chocolate taste like I expected, but a more gentle flavor that allows you to taste each ingredient, and adds onto the entire cohesiveness of the drink. To eat I had the traditional waffle and it was AMAZING. It was only $7 for the best quality waffle that I've had in ages! It was so fluffy, slightly crunchy on the outside but still doughy on the inside - god it was...
