This review is for the Momma G's soup at the Troutdale outlet mall. We had high hopes for this place seeing a lot of 5 star reviews. I now see that there are a lot of locations and maybe none of those reviews were from this particular location. First we ordered the turkey panini with pesto and the loaded potato soup. I watched as the guy helping us scooped the soup and set it on the counter. At the same time the panini was cooking. One of the gals came from the back and saw the soup sitting on the counter. She asked him about it and he told her he was doing the other things. She told him that it would be getting cold sitting on the counter. She returned to the back without assisting him. He then proceeds to take the soup and throw it back into the serving pot. Yikes! This soup has been sitting on the counter no longer at a save temperature then thrown back into the serving pot potentially contaminating it, at the very least reducing the temperature of the whole pot. In the meantime, our panini had finished was removed from the press and was sitting on the counter. I told my daughter, I hope that wasn't our sandwich, but since there was no one else there, it had to be. During this time we had forgotten to get cups for water so my daughter went up to get some. He said it was $5.00. I could see and hear from the table and went up and said I have never had to pay when eating at an establishment for a cup for water. He just didn't seem to be well trained. I then asked how much water bottles were and he told me $2.00, I said give us two of those instead. He then again, scoops two bowls of soup out of the pot, bacon, cheese and onions were added on top of our soup. He cuts the panini and hands us our food. The sandwich was cool, both bowls of soup had soup slopped all down the sides. I bite into the sandwich and it tastes off. I take a bite of soup and it is tepid at best. The gal comes out from the back and I approach her and very nicely tell her the soup is cold. She says sorry and asks if I would like her to nuke it?? I say ok...but this is served food it shouldn't even be going back into the kitchen and re-served due to health and safety concerns of possible contamination. While I waited I went back and told my daughter not to eat the food as I did not want to risk food posioning. The soup is largely dairy based and is not being kept at a safe temperature. The turkey on the panini just tasted off, it may have been fine, I honestly don't know and was not willing to risk it due to the other concerning things that I was witnessing. The gal brought my now nuked soup back and asked my daughter how hers was and if she wanted hers nuked. Obviously, it came from the same pot so it was no warmer than mine. We politely told her it was fine as we had no plans at that time to eat the food. We then dumped the $33 meal into the garbage and left to find food elsewhere. I always root for the new business, someone trying to make their dream come true but this was aweful. The lack of safely handling the food is a real issue. Seeing some very concerning things definitely make you concerned about how they are handling all of the food. The staff training also seemed to be far short of where it needed to be. I have never felt the need to write a restaurant review but I think that the concerns are worth noting to anyone that might want to eat here. There is definitely room and a need for growth. I do wish them all the best and hope that the training and general food handling safety issues are promptly addressed. Again, I wish them great success in the future but as of today, I would not...
Read moreThis review is for the cafe location inside the Kaiser Permanente Rockwood medical center. I visited 2 weeks ago and got a whole turkey pesto panini ($11), a 16oz soup du jour (Zuppa Toscana, $10), and a strawberry hand pie ($2).
Placed my order with the very friendly staff person, Elaina. I had asked about the soups and was offered samples of each. They were all delicious. I found the soup and sandwich to be on the pricy side, but figured the sandwich would be hearty like the ones at the Troutdale location. I tipped generously.
Elaina served up my soup and hand pie and said she would make the panini next. However, she then took the next person’s order (a latte) and proceeded to make that before starting my panini. It took maybe 5-6 minutes for her to do the other customer’s transaction and make their latte, and another 6-7 minutes for her to make my sandwich. I was admittedly a little irritated at having to wait for her to make the latte before starting the rest of my order, but she had been so friendly that I didn’t say anything. Luckily my soup was in a to-go container with a lid, so it stayed hot enough during the wait, but I wished everything had been served together instead of piecemeal.
When I got the panini, it was small and very thin. I’m talking 2 small slices of paper thin turkey like the Oscar Meyer lunch meat kind you’d put on a child’s sandwich. Also a very thin layer of provolone and small and wimpy bread slices. The sandwich was hugely disappointing, and after spending nearly $30 on three items (including my tip), I wasn’t even full after finishing it all.
Elaina did mention she doesn’t usually work there and was filling in for someone, so I’m not sure if the issues I had were a matter of lack of complete training or the standard for this cafe. Based on my one experience at this location, I would not go...
Read moreGreat soup. Good sandwich. Place was dead and employees matched the ambiance. I was there for 30 minutes during lunch hour, and the only other customer was the employee's mother.
I ordered soup and sandwich, and later asked for a cup for water. I was informed of the convenience fee. I couldn't have been mistaken for somebody who just walked in off the street. I sat right in front of the counter.
The sign at the register seemed to be chastising people for asking if this was Subway. Lose the sign. Use the opportunity to smile and say "oh no, our customers say we are much better than Subway".
The hype splashed on various social media heralding the new Momma G's location doesn't help somebody who did a Google search "Soups nearby". Use Google (as well as your social media choices) to guide customers. With GPS, pics and words, let them know it's in the Columbia Gorge Mall, stuck in a corner with no visible signage until you get about 10 ft away.
In this location, you are not a food pod or market hall, attracting people off of a busy City Street. This is a factory outlet mall directly off of a busy interstate, you may find a sizeable portion of your customers are random. You can guide them while they are traveling to make this stop. ...
