pretty disappointed overall. The place was recommended to me while I was working in Hancock. I arrived at about 4 PM and ordered one of their signature burgers and an order of fries, to go. I was the only one in the place. Once I had ordered I sat down to wait. But... within 90 seconds I was told my order was ready, was handed a bag with my food. What does this tell you? That burger was not cooked to order, nor were the fries. Once back at my hotel I found a dried out burger on a bun that had been obviously aging in a hot box, waiting for someone to come in and have it dumped on. same with the fries, definitely not fresh, but had been sitting under a warmer for way too long. Best guess, it was left over from lunch or a called in order which was not picked up, but... definitely not cooked/grilled to my order. That's the sort of thing a fast food joint does. I am sorry, but selling a burger like that will not get good reviews if looking to be elevated above fast, dried, and questionable food. this practice does not bode well for...
Read moreEasily the BEST food in the Keweenaw! Finally got to try out The Forge and was thoroughly impressed. Perfectly cooked, tender brisket with amazing flavor. Had the brisket sandwich and the bun was also light and an ideal pair for the BBQ brisket and sauce.
My wife had the pulled pork sandwich. Being from South Carolina, I can honestly say this was some of the best pulled pork I have had. Pulled pork is generally an SC specialty, and The Forge fully delivered on taste and quality.
Portions are great. Prices are reasonable across the board. This place would compete and thrive in Austin, Texas, which in BBQ terms is saying a lot. Had sides of mac and cheese and their tater tots. Both phenomenal, as well. You can tell the pit master/owners take pride in their product.
There is nothing close to The Forge in Michigan and certainly not in the Upper Peninsula. These guys and gals are on another level, and I can't wait to go back! If you're in the UP, you've got to...
Read moreThe lack of a menu with descriptions hurts when you are expected to order when you walk in. At least that's the picture you get when the counter is directly in front of the door.
The cashier was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and sold me on the Forge Burger with the brisket chili, a drink, and coleslaw.
Food was extremely good, and I'm a burger snob. Perfectly seasoned, good size patty with Lettuce, pickles, and 'super sauce' which was kinda like a big mac sauce. Very juicy, and you could really taste the meat instead of it being drowned under 20 other ingredients. The chili was good, but could use some beans (personal preference, definitely not taking off stars for this), and the coleslaw was a perfect slight sweetness paired with acidity.
The restaurant is small inside, eith only a few long picnic tables for seating, but there's two more outside.
Overall, an excellent place to grab a bite, bur you may wanna...
