Zum Edelweiss reminds me very much of mom-and-pop German restaurants I went to in Bavaria when I was a child living on a military base in Germany. There's a very laid-back atmosphere (which means less-than-speedy service, but I've always gone with a large group so we want to take our time & enjoy each other and the ambiance, so that has never mattered to us).
I've had several dishes over the last year, and it's been so long since I've lived in Germany that I can't speak to their authenticity, but I do know that they are delicious, and I can highly recommend the knackwurst, the wiener chnitzel, and the chicken Cordon Bleu. Their brown bread is fresh and tasty, and all of the sides (especially the spaetzel) I've tried were also very yummy. I keep meaning to try to the brotchen sandwich because I love the idea, but there are too many other tempting things! Even my picky kids - who generally eat nothing but chicken strips when we go out because I don't want to spend money on stuff they won't eat - gobbled up their schnitzel and wurst. (They do have chicken strips if you're taking other picky kids, but I wanted them to actually give it a try & I knew I'd be happy to eat their leftovers if they didn't, so of course they ate it all, haha.)
When we went after Thanksgiving, they had decorated for Christmas, and since some of my most vivid childhood memories are from the Kris Kringle Mart in Munich, it made me feel very thankful to be sharing that afternoon with some of my family (who had also lived those memories and were sitting around that table at Zum Edelweis). The everyday decor is also a huge throwback and brings back memories of volksmarches, beer gardens, King Ludwig's castles, and other non-food things that won't matter to those of you who aren't getting smacked over the head with fun memories. Thank you for refreshing those memories and helping me make some more, and thank you for the very tasty food!
The only issue I had at all was more to do with Google maps' directions, since it lead me to an apartment complex that was kind of adjacent to and behind the parking lot the restaurant is in. Obviously that's no fault of the restaurant's, but I wanted to note it here in case others get the same directions so they don't give up and inadvertently miss out...
Read moreAfter 7 Month travelling Canada,Alaska and US we are looking for some spots which look and taste a little bit like home.
It's easy to overlook the Edelweiss Restaurant, cause the entrance is in the corner - but it's absolutely worth to take a closer look.
We had a warm welcome, quick figured out that our root are in the same area of Germany - Riedstadt says hellt to Bingen :-)
We hadn't any Schnitzel for a long time, and to be honest... It's a different kind of Schnitzel here in US,but I like it more then the most German Schnitzel... To make it short: 1Jägerschnitzel, Spätzle, Sauerkraut 1 Raumschnitzel, cucumber salad , Potatosalad
It was excellent, and for Germans it's a huge portion.
Tomorrow I'm serving Lunch with SchnitzelBrötchen :-)
And don't forget to taste the Cakes... Homemade and delicious. We shared one slice of Schwarzwälder and one Mandarin.not for Dessert, but for the 5 o'clock tea... Yummi!
Thank you for the nice chat, the tasty food and the recommended Bakery.
All the best, Gerry,Dunja...
Read moreI’ve eaten here many years ago and it was still good, with that being said, I’ve tried this place three times in the recent past and was so disappointed. Meine Pommes waren weich und kalt, meine spätzel haben nach nichts geschmeckt und waren nicht ganz gar. Das Schnitzel war in ordnung. I imagine they are still in business because it’s the only large German place in the area with history behind it or some type of longevity. Please work on seasoning your food properly and poke some holes in the styrofoam container for deliveries so that the fries don’t go soft so quickly. I am disappointed to have had this experience and to have spent this money hoping that they improved. Als ehemaliger Koch aus Deutschland find ich es schade das dieses Essen nicht nach originaler...
