The cake was structurally well done if you don’t mind squished lettering, but they up-charged me and got the frosting wrong. Back story: I was looking for a baker in Harlingen that could design a cool Toy Story themed cake. This was my first custom ordered cake. I went to multiple bakeries, showed them my three inspo pictures and got a quote for a small red velvet (here I was quoted $33). I grabbed cupcakes to try their red velvet, plus a dab of the buttercream because it was discussed that the cream cheese frosting could not be dyed blue. Although I found the buttercream to be too sweet, my girlfriend liked the red velvet from here so next day I go back to place the order. Speaking to the same woman, she starts writing down the order and says the price is now $45 because I added elements (that should have been my sign). I had shown her the same 3 pictures as the day before. My girlfriend asked for this cake so I went ahead and let her take my money. To ease the blow I asked then if she could at least make the clouds with cream cheese frosting and she said it be no problem. But the whole thing was made with buttercream! Called in looking for a place to get a cake done for my anniversary, and ended up stumbling across Gloria’s Specialty Cakes. I called and gave a brief description on what I wanted the cake to look like and they say surprisingly that they can get it done. Not knowing truly how it was going to turn out, when I saw the final results I was astonished! Price and customer service is just all there with this place. Most places do the bare minimum especially if you don’t make a reservation, but they were able to take care of me very well. Attention to detail was there when whoever was making the cake added a couple more things on the cake before I walked out with it. You don’t get service like this anywhere else. Gloria’s Specialty Cakes might be a little hard to spot since the bakery doesn’t have a big sign, but it’s definitely worth finding.

We’re not from Harlingen, but we took a chance and ordered a tres leches cake for my husband’s birthday—and wow, it was perfect. The cake was tall, moist without being soggy, and absolutely delicious. My group of eight all agreed it was a hit. And for about $40… I would pay it again!

It also looked beautiful, decorated simply but with care. My husband loves tres leches, and this one will be a cake he’ll remember forever. It really was the cherry on top of his birthday.
