Racism is alive and fueled by gentrification On Monday, I visited Midtown Tavern, a place I used to frequent in my youth, only to have one of the worst experiences of my life. While sitting and listening to Tupac Shakur on my phone, I was confronted by the bartender and told to leave. When I asked if I was violating any policy, I was given no answer ā instead I was threatened with the police.
At no point was I hostile or violent, yet I was accused of being āhostile.ā The situation escalated when patrons began to confront me aggressively, and staff allowed it to happen. When I asked management if I had violated any policy, they had no reply. When I asked why customers were permitted to approach me violently, again, no reply.
The truth is, I was removed solely for listening to Tupac ā a clear example of how racism and gentrification operate in real time. What once was a bar rooted in community has become a space where Black culture and presence are policed, where playing hip-hop is treated as a threat, and where outsiders feel emboldened to gang up on someone for simply existing authentically.
This wasnāt just about music. It was about how certain people and cultures are no longer welcome in spaces they once...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUncomfortable experience tonight with our male waiter.
We were hoping to sit at the bar, unfortunately it was full. We had to track down a waiter to ask for a table. We were seated by a newer employee (we've been coming here since 2017 and have known many of the staff, but this male employee was new. His clothes looked unprofessional, a t-shirt tucked into his very low riding shorts. He did not check in on us during our dining experience and we had to flag him down for our check.
When he finally brought our check he decided to randomly tell us about a previous customer of his at this restaurant who had "peed herself". Trying to express how embarrassed she was for it. It made us feel uncomfortable that he would even bring this up, especially as he thought it was funny. Commenting how the chair was "soaking wet" when she stood up. And quoting remarks from her date at the time. Unprofessional and creepy. If he talked to us openly about this experience, how many others, including ourselves, is he talking about. Very disappointed in this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a good place to hang out but if you come on a football Sunday and your not an Eagles/Ravens/or Steelers fan and your team is playing at the same time as them, they would hate to put your game on. They do have Sunday Ticket but I was just there to watch the Cleveland Browns and at 1 o clock they put on Sunday ticket on one tv and they put the Browns game on the tv thatās far across from me with 4 other out of market games on. I had to ask to move to that table closed to that tv as I canāt see a thing. When I got there I found out that I missed a big touchdown. These bartenders made me miss a big play. Then at 2 minutes left of the 4th quarter the bartenders turned off my game to put another game on, like thatās rude I was watching that.
This isnāt the first time I came to Mad Moose, I always enjoy my time there but this is not a good place to watch a NFL Team thatās not a...
