If you're looking for a sushi restaurant, this isn't really that. It's an Asian fusion restaurant that happens to serve a little sushi. The fish itself wasn't bad, but the preparation and presentation were subpar. The chef didn't seem to know what toro was when I asked if they had any, thankfully the bartender knew what I was asking about, though it seems they don't offer much in the way of slightly less popular fish choices (uni, toro, ikura, salmon skin are what I asked about). Part of my order was a serving of salmon sashimi and a serving of yellowtail sashimi. While the fish was fresh and delicious, it was not sashimi cut. This is what I mean by subpar preparation and presentation. The pieces were large and flat, much better suited for a piece of nigiri, though even then they would have been too large. Finally was the spicy tuna roll. Certainly not what I expected, or I imagine what most people would expect when ordering a spicy tuna roll. What I got was a minced tuna and cucumber roll, with sriracha drizzled on top. Not what I wanted, but oh well. In the end the food was still tasty, but as a former sushi chef, not a place I would recommend to someone looking for sushi. If someone in the group wants sushi and someone in the group doesn't, here exists a...
Read moreVisited Beyond with colleagues and a job candidate. We went early, so the noise level was fine and the atmosphere quaint, but by the time we left, it was pretty busy and quite loud. I can't speak for anyone else in my party, but I found my entree--Vietnamese noodles with chicken--to be very disappointing. First, my entree looked exactly like the Drunken Noodles our candidate ordered--same vegetables, same noodles, same presentation. I wasn't expecting wide flat noodles--I thought it would be served with thin rice noodles. The wide noodles would have been fine except they were all clumped together and super solid in the middle of the clump. Not very appetizing. In addition, the entree was VERY spicy and contained A LOT of Thai Basil. The description didn't mention Thai basil or it being spicy. I almost wonder if I wasn't served the someone else's Drunken Noodles by mistake. Beyond the spiciness, the entree lacked flavor otherwise. Had we not been with a candidate, I would have sent it back. As it were, I took most of the entree home to my husband, who also agreed it was not good. I am a little embarrassed we took a candidate there. Harrisonburg definitely has...
Read moreThis was our first visit here and we had a very pleasant experience. Our waitress, Kim, was super helpful and friendly. We ordered 2 rolls of sushi, salmon and spicy tuna. I am pretty picky about my sushi and I can honestly only say it was OK. I would still rather go other places in Harrisonburg if I was just eating sushi. For our entrees, I ordered an Oriental Chicken Salad and my husband ordered something suggested by our waitress called the Kim Special. Guys.....I cannot explain to you how deeply amazing the Kim Special was!!! It was a Korean noodle soup with ramen, rice patties, a soft boiled egg, tender beef, and an absolutely stellar spicy bone broth. I am a HUGE fan of Phô and this is very similar but knocked the socks off of any traditional Phô I've ever had!!! My Oriental Chicken Salad was good but next time I come here (and trust me, it will be soon) I will only be ordering the Kim Special and I highly recommend you...
