In the Fall of 2019 I decided to get a new on road touring bike, after having done a great deal of research and reading. Part of my “research” was several visits to SBC, having bought new and used bikes there over the fifteen years prior. I came to the point of getting quite dialed into the Surly Long Haul Trucker, or Disc Trucker. I met with Tim several times and he spent a lot of time with me each time, so much so that I felt guilty for taking so much of his time. He never showed an inkling that I was taking too much of his time; to the contrary, he always made me feel as though talking to me was the most important thing he had to do and that he enjoyed it. I have always been very impressed with all the staff at SBC, but was very fortunate that Tim was available to me because he has many thousands of miles of touring experience, and in many countries, over a great variety of conditions. Tim knows touring and touring bikes — I mean every aspect and nuance. I developed great confidence that he was the most qualified person I could ever find who could learn my needs, wants, capabilities, limitations, and guide my selection of bike, size, and options, and he seemed to be truly enjoying doing it. I finally ordered the Disc Trucker. It came in, SBC assembled and tuned it, and I went in to be bikefitted by Tim. Tim made all the necessary adjustments to properly fit the bike to me. Surly had substituted tires and handlebars, rather than supplying those I expected from studying the Surly web site. I told Tim I was disappointed, and that the advertised parts were important to me, and some of the factors that influenced me to select that bike. Tim, on one occasion, and Kevin on another, phoned Surly and convinced them to swap the tires and handlebar at no additional cost to me. SBC did not charge me for the labor of making the changes. Swapping the handlebars took considerable labor, and I am not unmindful that installation of the original handlebars took considerable labor, there being bar end shifters, derailleur adjustment, break lever installation and adjustment, and bar tape wrapping. I call that extraordinary customer service. During my process of deciding upon and buying a touring bike, Thomas, Kevin, and Glen also greatly helped me. I am enjoying my Disc Trucker, and I am a dedicated customer of SBC. The people at SBC value quality products and work, customer satisfaction, customer service, fairness and integrity, and they so enjoy riding bikes and spending time with...
Read moreSuch a great bike shop right in the middle of downtown. I've only been in a handful of times, but every time has been a memorable experience. The first time, I was looking for a bottom bracket tool as I was upgrading the drivetrain on my Specialized Diverge. Turns out, the bottom bracket should have come with a plastic insert to be used with a larger bottom bracket tool. One of the mechanics took one of these inserts out of his own tool box and gave it to me so I could get my project done. The second time, I was interested in purchasing a new bike. Kevin was absolutely incredible. He asked about the type of riding I do, where I usually ride, the key features I look for in a bike, and had a really great conversation to recommend the correct bike for me, even though they didn't currently have any in stock. He could have persuaded me into something that they had in stock, but instead was more concerned that I'd find the bike that fit my wants and needs perfectly. I managed to find a barely used model of the bike Kevin recommended elsewhere, and he was absolutely right. It was exactly what I was looking for. On my next trip back, I needed a computer mount for the front of my Domane. Kevin was helping me again this time, and knew instantly what I needed. This is one of my favorite bike shops. Every employee I've dealt with is super friendly, and a wealth of knowledge. They don't just try to get you in, sell you something, then get you back out the door. I haven't taken advantage yet, but have seen pricing in their emails for bike servicing that I'll definitely be taking advantage of in the future. Their full service that includes replacement of all cables, handlebar tape, full bike lube, etc is a...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I visited while spending the day in Harrisonburg a while back. I am an enthusiastic cyclist who drags her into every bike shop we pass, and she usually can't wait to leave. Our experience at Shenandoah Bicycle Company was different. The staff was fantastic, speaking to both of us like people and not just potential customers, answering all of her questions, joking around, and making her feel comfortable. I actually own a large bike shop myself (in NJ) which I think is quite nice, but after we left she kept telling me, 'See pumpkin, you've gotta do it like they're doing it, with those nice displays and decorations and the way it's all arranged, and those fun bells and colorful waterbottles, (blah blah blah).' It was great!. These folks are clearly into it for the love of bikes and the great experiences that different bikes can provide to different people. We ended up leaving with a few cool accessories and a used road bike they had near the entrance that was just too good a deal to pass up. Places like this make me wish I didn't actually work at my own bike shop, so that I could justify visiting them for all of my bike purchases. A top notch wonderful experience.
And from a product perspective, they carry great brands and a nice mix of mainstream and niche keeps it...
