Bella Gelato & Pastries — Restaurant in Harrisonburg

There are not very many local bakeries that make real, handcrafted, specialty croissants. And then you make your own gelato too??! WOW! I was so impressed with this small cafe/bakery/gelato shop. My wife and I went in the morning and did not get the gelato, but we probably should’ve. We picked a couple of pastries for ourselves, and then were so enticed with their offerings that we decided to buy a couple more for us to eat later - but there was no later for those pastries. Perhaps to our shame, but more to our enjoyment, we confess that yes, we ate all of those pastries shown in the picture. The everything croissant was by far the best, and it blew my mind. It had cream cheese injected into it that was SO good. And I’m not a croissant connoisseur at all, but I (at least somewhat) understand the extensive process to make them, and that it is extremely tedious and difficult. Their croissants had unbelievably flaky crusts, were so puffy and fluffy and buttery on the inside, and the layers you could see on the outside were both astonishing, and mesmerizing. Tuesday night, went there with my daughter for gelato. No customers and still waited 5 minutes while both employees didn’t acknowledge us. A couple walked in and a one of the employees started to take their order. I was actually shocked they had ignored us and stated we were there first. The employee still proceeded to take the other customers order first. Then when she saw I was upset, she said with an attitude half heartedly that she would get our order. While she was mid scoop she looked at the other customers and told them she was sorry … as if we weren’t even standing there. I was so disgusted with lack of customer service that I told her she could just forget about the order all together. Unfortunately she ruined the entire experience. The drinks are good, but the place seems to need more help (who doesn't these days?). My boyfriend ordered a medium hot chocolate and they gave him a small by mistake at first. They were great at fixing the problem but they just seem frantic at work here. Then a bald guy, who is I'm guessing the owner, came in and was rearranging the chairs loudly, swiftly walking around with questions for the team, really assertive attitude. Meanwhile we're grabbing a coffee date seeing all this. Like, way to ruin your own atmosphere, dude. I love the music they play, though.
