Scandinavian Shave Ice — Restaurant in Hawaii

So frustrating!!!!! We have never actually been here because they chose to alter their hours today and then did not follow through with actually being open for the hours their employees stated they would be following. I specifically called them in advance on the phone to inquire about hours for the day and was told very specifically their special hours today. They said they would be open until 7pm and then they would close between 7pm and 8pm, and then reopen at 8pm for one hour, closing down at 9pm. I repeated it back for confirmation and asked a couple additional questions. Great. We planned our entire evening around visiting the shop (made dinner plans surrounding this, promised our child they would get to have their first shave ice this evening, drove over half an hour into town for no reason other than going here, etc. All to find out they decided to change their hours and closed early, not operating according to what they had stated. It’s Christmas Eve. I have full support for any business closing down for a holiday so employees can have their well deserved time off to enjoy with their families…in fact, I encourage it. But communicate and follow through. For those who choose to stay open and work, we will reward them with super generous tips and loads of kindness and gratitude. But don’t tell customers otherwise and then close on a whim like that because you decide you don’t feel like reopening after (what appeared to be) a...

Tried a few of the natural flavors, and the Natural Strawberry with Dole Whip in the middle is one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted.

However: the place doesn't smell great, so you'll probably want to eat elsewhere Pay attention the menu pricing and what you're charged — both times I visited it seemed like prices were more of a vibe than a calculation. My girlfriend ordered a small shave ice with dole whip and natural flavors (which according to the menu should be $6 + $2.50 + $1 =$9.50), and I ordered a small with natural flavors ($6 + $1 =$7.00). However, she was charged $9 and I was charged $10. Went back again because of how much we enjoyed it the first time and decided to split a medium with dole whip and natural flavors ($9 + $2.50 + $1 =$12.50) and was charged $12... but I swear the size is exactly the same between the small and the medium. This isn't a dealbreaker (I was still glad we went back, and would go again!) but it's sloppy practice. TL;DR check that you're not being overcharged, and don't bother ordering a...

What's a trip to Hawai'i without some shave ice??!! Scandinavian (in name, but Hawaiian in make and taste) is conveniently located in the middle of Kona, visible just slightly off the main, coastal road. It's a small place (3 tables, I think, but also sitting room outside), but great shave ice (yes, absolutely different than a snow cone!). The flavors, combinations, and toppings are dizzying! (NOTE: unless you are VERY hungry, or sharing, a small, or MAYBE a med. should be big enough...they are BIG!) Watching them shape your ice is almost as much fun as eating it! Do be careful, tho, and use the Plexiglas holders on the tables, they are very top heavy, and we saw 2 that wound up on the floor...definitely too delicious to waste! This was our 3rd visit to Kona, and every time, we look forward to getting our Scandinavian Shave Ice...wouldn't be Hawai'i...
