The initial impressions were a mom and pop sushi restaurant. I was excited as restaurants of this nature typically have some of the best foods you can find. Upon getting seated, the waitress does not bring water to our table, and she snubs us. This would seem normal in a larger restaurant however this restaurant is barely 1 room. I ignored this and had to use the restroom so I asked and got a key, and the restroom was atrocious. It was down a creepy alley and inside a terrifying room that could have a body in the next room. Restaurants can’t always pay or have space for a restroom so I ignored this. Then the meal came. My family and I ordered sushi, and two of their bowls. We had to ask for avocado to be removed from the sushi due to a family allergy and the staff responded rudely about this request. When the sushi was delivered the person who brought it to our table looked at me with a sneer steeped in half hearted kindness and disgust. The sushi was the most generic and basic sushi I have ever tried. It brought nothing new to the table, and the fish was not even exceptional, something that should not be the case when living on an island. The bowls were.. fine. Slightly dry and not exceptionally flavorful. The rice was slightly clumpy even. The entire time we ate and ordered, the waitress had an air of being inconvenienced and like she was not even listening when we asked her questions or added things to our order. The price was about average but for the quality it should have been very cheap. If I had to rate the food alone, it was a 3/5, but the service brought this steeply down to a 1/5. Whoever has been rating this restaurant 5/5 or 4/5 has either never had sushi, is a bot, or being incentivized to place a good review. I highly recommend ignoring this restaurant and trying the plethora of delicious...
Read moreThis would have been a 5 star review if it wasn't for our second visit here.
We came by this week and loved it all! The food is excellent and very fresh. This is a "diamond in the rough" so to speak -- little hole in the wall where you actually have to serve yourself your own water. Our server was a kind Asian woman this first visit and she was great.
We all ordered hot sake. I ordered the hot lava roll and the Kona sunset roll. Both were good but I definitely preferred the hot lava roll -- super Ono!! Others in my party also tried the chicken teriyaki, edamame, hamachi, and the special hamachi jalapeño. The hamachi was delicious and fresh -- the jalapeño special added some nice heat to it. We were disappointed in the amount of skin on the chicken, however.
Naturally we come back for a second time a few days later (my dad LOVES sushi). This time our server is a gal named Jasmine. The place is pretty slow that day. We order basically the exact same items. Our server had a pretty severe attitude and I noticed it wasn't only towards us. There was a couple seated next to us that also seemed surprised and offended by the server (things like forgetting drinks and then slamming them down on the table, a complete indifference to what we asked for when we ordered, etc). It was all very strange and I felt also very confused -- I don't know if she was just having a bad day or what but it was very off putting. This place is in a tourist zone, so perhaps she was sick of the tourists but funny enough, our family is from Kona.
Come for the sushi but I guess just expect poor service here if you get...
Read moreI don’t normally share reviews but my experience was so bad, I want to warn others about coming here. We ordered from DoorDash and got the wrong dish and our miso soup had no broth in it… meaning it was just an empty cup with seaweed and tofu. They just forgot to put the broth in, I guess. Now, these things happen, so that wasn’t a huge deal. I called the restaurant and told them what happened and requested if I could at least pick up the soup and to see if maybe the meal we got was something we could eat anyways (my wife has allergies and has to be careful). If it was possible, I would have liked for them to make us the meal we ordered. I was passed to 3 different people on the phone, none of whom were explained what happened, so I had to retell it each time. I was then told that they were too busy, would not remake anything for us even though the dish we did not order but got anyways did not accommodate allergies, and there was nothing they could do.
In short, the miso soup is a bit dry and each bite may not be what you expect. There’s too much good places to eat on this island than to be...
