We went to Avalon Diner on 11/02/2017 . Address is 8800 Katy freeway, Houston, Tx. Avalon Diner has been open since 1938. The Decor is to give the feeling in the atmosphere of 30's/40's . Photos are on the wall of the original Avalon Diner. The diner serves breakfast and lunch and is open from 7 am -4 pm. Blue plane special are served daily ranging from $6.75-$8.45. The consist of entree sides and desert . Avalon is famous for Soda Fountain Drinks as follows: fresh squeezed lemonade, ice cream soda such as cola float and root beer floats. A Houston tradition for over 75 years They have the best milk shakes and malts that I have ever tasted ranging from $4.00 to $5.00 . I had a creamy , thick , delicious chocolate malt served along with a ice cold mixing cup. Flavors are as follows: chocolate, vanilla, banana, pineapple, Oreo cookie, butterscotch and peppermint patty. My cousin had indulged on pancakes . She wanted me to mention the great way the syrup comes in a hot bottle and lots of it. I had the french toast with banana and powder sugar and pecans. A little bit dry but nothing warm syrup can't fix . Staff very friendly, Carrie was our waitress , very knowledgeable on the menu. Carrie is a yankee fan and even wore a Houston Astro shirt to show Houston Strong Spirt.😇

My experience today at Avalon was just okay. I did meet some nice folk in there which made my day. The customer service was very very good. I take nothing from that. I'm sorry however, the food it self was not. The dessert was not good I tried twice. Stay away from it like you would a pile of bees. First I got a coconut pie. Then I got the chocolate cake. Definitely not good not good!!! Please do yourself a favor avoid it at all cost. The coffee was not good either. EWW!!! The BLT was not good maybe it was the rye bread but it was sorta dry to. That was a bummer cause I had been craving it for a while. The only things that was really good was the hot cocoa when I changed from the coffee to it and the curly fries. Man!!! They were good. Hot Crispy and fresh they were. Maybe I should have gotten breakfast. I was torn between the BLT and an omelette. I went with the BLT which was a (Bad idea). Again the staff was nice but a lot of them also kept wiping their noses with their bare hands using no sanitizer from what I could see. Like 50 percent of them did that. EWW!!! They need sanitizing stations everywhere if they're gonna keep that up.

I’m reviewing Avalon’s breakfast today. I’m comparing them with what I always order when I’m eating breakfast at what I consider the BEST breakfast in Houston. Waffle House. My standard breakfast is 2 eggs scrambled, sausage patties, hash browns & biscuit. First I must say the portions were larger at Avalon. Smaller scrambled but larger hash browns, sausage patties and a way larger fluffier biscuit. Excellent jam & jelly, the fancy stuff. Nice. Okay, let’s start. The scrambled eggs were over cooked. The hash browns had a crispy outside but no creamy buttery inside, also dry. The sausage portion was way bigger than WH but again over cooked. The biscuit was like I said bigger and fluffier. The price was comparable but the Championship of breakfast is still Waffle House. I checked out the lunch menu and I’ll go back soon to review a few lunch items. I won’t do breakfast again because it’s so easy to do eggs right and hash browns right.

We have given this business a couple of tries. The speed of service is definitely not quick by any stretch of the imagination. The Monday blue plate chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with gravy is really pretty good. The chicken fried steak and the mashed potatoes literally cover the entire plate. So well worth the price for the meal that you get. The follow-up service part during the meal is about the same. As it appears there's only a couple of folks maintaining the tables for what is a fairly good size dining room. I'm not sure that we will be back as another guest was highly irritated, and was addressing the staff and cashier with nothing but f-bombs, one right after another. I don't know anything about this particular guest or their relationship with the business. But the cashier who was of senior status did not address the customer to curve his language as he was loud enough that anyone within the business could hear his comments including a member of the wait staff who started to address him from across the room. So I know he was loud enough that she could hear him a good 40 or so feet away....
