Order: Ethiopia - Guji Pour Over & Bourbon Cardamum iced late Price: $8 Positives: Great flavor, helpful staff, outdoor COVERED seating area Negatives: I wish they could do the pour over iced tldr: Mothership is a great place for coffee with amazing beans and a selection of more unusual, but still delicious, lattes. However, the shop is fairly small so maybe
Thoughts: Stop number four on the Vegas coffee, food, and dessert tour! Needing more coffee after our food and dessert, we decided to stop in to Mothership coffee. First off, I appreciate how Mothership does their theme of almost space-age coffee without overdoing it. There weren’t a whole bunch of tacky paper spaceships hanging all over the place. Instead they creatively named a few of their drinks, and their sign-up letter to be creatively science-fiction. It was tasteful and apparent, but not overdone
The interior of the shop is actually fairly small but they did offer some outdoor seating that was covered. I love sitting outside but in the temperatures that Vegas brings it is so nice that they covered the seating area, it made a world of difference. We settled on somewhat of our standard fare when we go to new coffee shops, consisting of a pour over and a cappuccino or latte. In this case we got a pour over of their Ethiopian Guji and Bourbon Cardamom latte and both of them were fantastic.
The pour over had a great depth and complexity, the beans weren’t over roasted, it didn’t taste burnt and it wasn’t so watery that the coffee had no real flavor. The latte was fantastic as well, it had definite notes of bourbon and cardamom in the drink without overpowering the espresso, since let’s be real that’s why I’m buying a latte. Nothing makes me crazier and than getting a latte or cappuccino and the flavor they add is all you taste.
The staff was super helpful in pointing out options and talking through the ways they make the drinks. Another highlight is that many of their syrups are housemade. This really makes a big difference when flavoring drinks because most commercially produced syrups are very sweet and don’t taste like what they are called.
The only thing I wish was different, and I soon discovered this was a trend in Vegas, is that they don’t do their pour-overs iced. They seemed willing to do it but they would make a standard pour over and then just dump the hot coffee over ice and end up just watering it down. It was a very odd experience because almost every coffee shop I have visited before does iced pour overs. Instead of your standard 350ml to 20g of coffee you do 150ml of ice and then 200ml of water to 20g of coffee and you brew the pour-over over the ice then dump the cooled coffee over a cup of ice. It’s how I make iced pour overs at home so again very weird that they didn’t do it here. But at least they were honest and told me they didn’t do it rather than just giving me just give me a watered down cup of coffee.
All in all I would highly recommend mothership as a place to go get coffee. It may not be the best place to sit for hours and work, or chat with people because of the size of the shop but it’s 100% an amazing place to just go get a cup of coffee and maybe a more out-of-this world flavored cappuccino or latte.
So far I’m sensing that Vegas has a pretty killer...
Read moreGreat hard working workers, food, coffee, BUT, the owners should know that most of us come to be greeted by their awesome baristas who all know our names, been going for years, I'll go elsewhere now and give others my business, same with all of my employees, now that the BEST employees are leaving, only a few are staying who are VERY kind and incredible workers being treated terrible, they all know your name! the owners management is terrible! even the bakers QUIT! The best owners know to hire or give raises to their longtime faithful employees to higher positions they EARN, as PROMISED, but these owners are hiring people outside their own workers! poor decisions close companies like these!, these managers treat employees terrible, (owners must be approving this) changing shifts after workers who usually work several jobs make plans at other jobs, the managers change baristas days hours without notice and expect them to tell other jobs they have they cannot make it because these inexperienced uncaring managers feel like changing the shifts? poor Baristas still left, EMPLOYEES are what makes a GREAT business, not the owners, trickles down to the management they choose, again, giving these higher positions to current hard workers dedicated to their jobs deserve these positions, I'll never go in there again, maybe only to say hi to the "few" baristas left, remember owners!! the people come because of the food and coffee, but come back because of the way they are treated and we ALL support how hard these baristas work, now most of them are all gone, and the others should be leaving soon! good luck keeping in business, remember customers have a choice! and most of us choose to go somewhere they are known, and where they support the workers being treated with respect! shame on you owners, I know this because I now go where the other ex-employees have quit and are now working! so don't be picking on current employees, they haven't said anything except smile, work...
Read moreUpdated Review [visited 11/11]: I am glad to say that I had a really good experience the last time I visited this Mothership location.
There were two baristas when I visited, not too busy, midday. They were very welcoming and kept a light warm conversation going while I was ordering. I received my coffee in an appropriate time frame, not rushed [which I personally prefer as I felt that my drink was taken care of].
I tried my drink right as I got into the car as well as my partner's. We both thoroughly enjoyed our drinks [lavender lattes like last time] and will be coming back to this location. I'm glad to see such an improvement!
Past Review: Unfortunately, this location has had a dramatic decline in drink quality and consistency over the last few months.
My most recent experience being one of the worst I have ever had with any coffee place.
I ordered a regular item, nothing special, a lavender latte. My partner ordered the same.
When we finally walked out and started drinking our lattes, we were met with the most intense, face-scrunching, sour yet bitter flavor ever. No lavender taste and pure sourness.
After doing some research, we figured out that espresso gets sour if it's been sitting out for a long period of time or if the shot itself was not heated up to the proper temperature.
Either way, the baristas there either did not know how to make it or were too lazy to make fresh shots for us.
We were gravely disappointed as this place was pretty solid a few months back, but we've been experiencing so many inconsistencies like this over time.
Unfortunately, we will not be going to this location until changes are made.
[EDIT: they left this lovely message, but although they told me to reach out, they have yet to respond to my email - it's been weeks. EDIT: We are in connection, and I'll be trying them...
