Nunu's Thai Dishes is a shimmering oasis in what is otherwise (saving very few exceptions) a foodie desert landscape here in Herndon. Just approaching the doors of Nunu´s, we are gently bathed with the captivating aromas of authentic Thai flavors. We are transported to the fragrant Bangkok alleyways that whisper of that symphony of spice and cream that defines Thai cuisine.
I have been to Nunu´s Thai Dishes ́ more than 3 times. Every time, it has been a superb testament to their commitment to good food, to their commitment to quality standards, and to their passion for Thai cuisine. My taste buds were captivated from the first bite, particularly by the curries.
I fell in love with Thai cuisine traveling through Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ko Tao, Ko Samui, etc). Since then, I learned how to cook some Thai dishes, and I have been to many Thai restaurants in the US and in Europe. Surely, Nunu´s is very high on my list for great Thai food. And it just happens to be located in Herndon, which I consider a real cosmic gift for all us Herndon foodies.
Nunu´s Red Curry is a revelation. It wasn't the one-dimensional firebomb you sometimes encounter. Instead, it was a layered dance of chilies, lemongrass, and galangal, building from a gentle warmth to a satisfying tingle, a rich and velvety coconut milk lullaby (as I like it most of the time, instead of watery). The Green Curry, as usual, offered me a different kind of magic. Here, the herbaceousness of Thai basil and kaffir lime leaves dominated the song, but they left enough headroom for the shy breeze of green curry to take the spotlight. Tender slices of chicken soaked up the fragrant broth, while the generous eggplant added a delightful textural contrast.
But let's not forget one of my favorite supporting acts: the Eggplant Basil. This dish was a refreshing counterpoint to the curries' fire. Silky strands of eggplant, cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection, were stir-fried with fragrant basil leaves and chilies. Each bite was a refreshing change to the creaminess of the curries. A gentle hint of fish sauce in the background gave it depth and umami, making it a dish I have not found yet a way to stop ordering again, and again, and again.
Nunu's Thai Dishes, as many other great Thai restaurants, is about capturing the essence of Thai cuisine - the boldness, the balance, the playfulness, the fire.
If you're looking for an authentic Thai experience that will leave your taste buds dancing, Nunu's Thai Dishes is your new Bangkok street corner, right here in your Herndon...
Read moreI had a unpleasant experience at Nunu's that I would likek to share. Last week, I had gone to the restaurant and discussed with Manager present that I want to place a pickup order next week for 12 people and I would be ordering four different entrees, she showeed me a tray that she indicated will be enough for 12 people if I am ordering 4 entrees and said that each tray will hold equivalent of three orders of an entree. she further stated that she would charge me for three dinner servings for each tray. I agreed and she furher gave me an incentive of 10% off from total bill.
So, based on above discussion, I was expecting a total bill of around $150, that sounded reasonable , I placed the order in writing this week on 11/27 for pickup on 11/29 Friday at noon.
When I go there to pick, I see four trays that looked three times bigger than what she had showed me last week and the total bill was of course three times bigger, $450.00.
I told the manager on duty (different person) that they have made a mistake but this manager insisted that no mistake has been made on their part and I have to pay $450 that I refused. I asked him to call the other manager I had placed the order with, she comes out, they both discussed in their language and I could tell from their body language that they realize they have messed up but the manager on duty still insisted I must pay $450, at tthis point, he became very disrespectful, discourteaous and angry.
I told him again, he has the option to transfer the right amount in smaller trays and I will pay what I ordered for; finally he agreeed and snatched charge card from my hand which I did not like but I kept quiet.
Finally, he took all large trays into the kitchen and transferred the food into smaller trays, and charged me the appropriate amount. I requested him to give me a hand to carry the tarys to my car parked right in front of the restaurat, he refused.
When I came home, I noticed one of the trays just had enough quantity for one dinner entree and not three. I also had requested at the time of order not to add any fish, or oyster sauce in any of the four dishes but one of them had heavy fish sauce smell that I have to dump in...
Read moreI just came back from picking up food from this place and I don’t know why we ordered from here! They told us the food would be ready in 40 minutes. I got there in 40 minutes and ended up leaving the restaurant about 1 hour 10 minutes after I placed my order. We ordered two entrees and an appetizer and I came home to see we were charged $3 per dish over the price of the dish. Why? Because we asked for Tofu! A few things are wrong here - 1) nowhere on the website does it say there’s a charge for Tofu. The website menu mentions a premium for specialty meats like shrimp etc (which we did not order) 2) when we called the restaurant to enquire why we were charged $6 for our dishes, the manager says the following things during our conversation “sir, everything is not free! We charge for anything you want to add. It’s on the website” (please see screenshots of the website - nowhere does it state that there is a charge for tofu). 3) then he proceeded to end the conversation by saying he was “busy and would call me back”. When we started giving our number so he could call us back to further discuss, we heard an audible gasp and another “I’m busy here ok?” 4) finally - yes I was offered a drink while I waited, which I took. While on the phone, the manager stated that “she was given Thai tea Thai coffee and knew we were busy so..” (I’m sorry - should I be ok with being charged extra just because I was offered a free small drink since my order was 30 minutes late?).
Had they said it would take an hour, I could consider it and would have adjusted my pick-up time accordingly. Had they said there are extra charges for items or if those were posted online, that would be fair - I’m willing to pay when properly advertised. I know that “nothing is free” (to quote the manager) but I also believe what I see on a menu listed on a website, and the pricing, should be fixed. We gave the manager the choice to fix it. He said he would call back in 2 minutes and he did not. The manager was not apologetic and lied about his policies. To the manager, please fix...
