EDIT——REVIEW HAS CHANGED!!

Me and my family used to absolutely love this place. They had the sweetest servers and the kitchen was always on point. Over the last couple years, we have slowly stopped going as much. We have noticed a severe decline. It got to a point where we knew there would either be the B team or the C team serving. The awesome staff that was there before, I never see them anymore. We stopped going inside the restaurant because the kitchen blasts their music so loud. So we resorted to drive-through. That experience was also a disappointment. They put cold salads on the bottom of hot plates in the same bag. A couple weeks ago my kids were wanting to come visit inside the restaurant and I told them not to expect anything special. Well it was worse than it has ever been. It was a bunch of teenagers working which I have no problem with, but from past experiences, I knew these kids were not good at customer service. The service was very slow. When we finally got our food, everything was cold. The server clapped back when I mentioned it was cold. She said it was hot when she took it from the kitchen. Being in the service industry for many many years, I highly doubt the food was hot when she brought it out of the kitchen. I asked them to make it hot again to which I’m assuming they microwaved it. The food came back out and all the carrots were still cold. We ended up not eating, not taking it to go and will never be back. Waste of money and time. It’s really sad that this place has gone downhill. It was one of our favorites.

I would also like to add that even with complaining to the server, I did not see a manager in the building, and no one came to our table to check on us. Having been in management before, I would have definitely gone and checked on the table. We by no means want anything free. it really was just a huge disappointment that there was a major complaint and no one even cared. The whole feeling of the restaurant is that no one cares and it shows in the service and food.

ORIGINAL REVIEW YEARS AGO——Love love love this place! Service is always fantastic and food is awesome! The first time we went, we couldn’t believe what our bill was for 3 of us. It was a pleasant surprise to get great food, great service, and not have to pay outrageous amount of money. I would eat here every day if I could. There has not been one time I visit that everything is not wonderful. Thank you for a great restaurant and we always look forward to coming back...

Been a fan of Kurus for years, has always been my favorite sushi place until tonight, celebrating our friends birthday we waited 30 minutes just for drinks or someone to serve us and that was the only refill we got on our $3 teas the entire night, which turned into a 2 hour waiting game of us staving off hunger and anger with entertaining ourselves. While we waited 5 other families came into what was now a pretty packed house (which didnt start off that way) and that would've been fine if they hadnt been served and gotten their to-go plates before we'd even seen a sign of our food. One couple arrived with us but the other 4 groups came between 20 to 45 minutes after us. We finally get it an hour and 20 minutes into waiting with only our 1st glass of tea, and the food was cold and 2 plates were missing, and another was someone elses order entirely. The fourth member of our party, the birthday girl we were there to celebrate, got her food last and it was 20 minutes after ours came, cold, and not complete after our server said it was sitting up there and she'd be back with it... The icing on the cake was when we left thinking the $127 bill sounded a bit higher than usual and we looked to see 4 items were charged that we didnt even order, and of course despite complaints nothing was done to rectify it. This will be the very last time that I go back to what was once my favorite asian...

Highly overrated, especially for the price. The experience starts at the entryway. For whatever reason, the restaurant eliminated the airlock at the entryway, the result is if you're seated anywhere near the door a cold wind blows across you and your food everytime someone enters or exits. There is no printed menu available, you are expected to scan a QR code and download their menu. I understand that this probably minimizes their costs (they're certainly not passing that savings on to their customers but I digress), but a printed copy needs to be available upon request. There are many reasons a customer may need a printed menu and not having one available set a very poor tone from the beginning. The food: the best I can rate my entree is minimally acceptable. My wife's sushi was a nearly inedible joke. Meats dry and overcooked, the seaweed wrap on her sushi was tough and overcooked, rice overcooked, broccoli was an overcooked mess. Service: not terrible but not the best. Overall she was ok, but around 10 minutes into my meal she asked if I need a box. I was clearly nowhere near finished eating, and rushing your diners in this manner is very poor form. The only pros I can list are the shrimp sauce and teriyaki both have excellent flavor, the crab Rangoon was good, though slightly chewy, and the carrots were very good.

Overall, I do not recommended. Very poor quality, especially...

Disclaimer: these details are specific to the visit leading to my review. This restaurant may or may not change as time passes. But when I went, I was pleasantly shocked - it seems ku-ru is a vestige of a bygone era, where staff will actually serve you (my drink was topped unprompted! twice!), the food is actually delicious and worth the price, and the atmosphere is genuinely pleasant! I ordered hot appetizers (no photos, sorry, I was hungry) which came with CONVENIENTLY cool sauces! That's so thoughtful! They were also notably hand made, you could /easily/ tell they didn't come from a frozen bag (rangoons). And the wait time for the food flew by with company. Our hostess/waitress did not hover unnecessarily or push us to order quicker than we were ready. I did not catch her name but she was a MODEL server; I simultaneously felt attended to without feeling watched, and my date was treated with respect, too (I arrived as a walk-in an hour before closing, holiday traffic 😅). I rarely hand out full 5 star reviews, but this place is **seriously** worth a visit if you enjoy Asian cuisine.

Ku-ru is a new sushi/hibachi restaurant in Hickory. Well, new to me. I chose it because I thought it looked casual enough to go in our shorts from shopping. We were seated immediately and served kindly and quickly. Our waitress tonight was a real pleasure! They brought us Miso soup to begin, and it was delicious. Very intense flavor, and just enough to whet our palate. We ordered Crab Rangoon to begin and it was crispy creamy deliciousness, but the real stand out was the light sauce that came with it. It wasn't a cloying sweet and sour sauce, but a real sweet chili sauce. We all got sushi rolls for our meal and all were fresh and delicious. Everything looked as good as it tasted. The kids wanted to try the Mochi balls for dessert and they were good, but I believe that might be an acquired taste. It was a bit gelatinous for me, but the girls seemed to like it. We also got fried ice cream, and it was fine, but I do suggest just skipping dessert. We enjoyed our meal there and are sure to be back again soon!

Only thing that felt good about this place was 1.) they had Avatar the last air bender on the TV, and 2.) our server was nice. Aside from that, this place was trash. Prices were way too high for what you get. Veggie rolls were tiny (size of a dime). Ordered 6 rolls for two people, and left hungry. Food took forever to get out (literally watched over an episode of Avatar). Presentation and quality of roll was poor. Sweet potato was pretty cold. And, “pickled root” is actually just carrot. I’ve had better veggie sushi from grocery stores. The one spicy tuna roll ordered was okay, at best. I usually don’t give bad reviews like this, but I saw the rating and thought that I was going to somewhere good. Obviously very disappointed and want to let others know that this is not the spot for good sushi in Hickory. Will not return or recommend… they did put a lot of ginger on the plate though.
