I've been obsessed with this place ever since I tasted their bagels and their schnitzel sandwich. It's amazing! I've also interacted with a couple of their staff members in the past (both females), and they've been super friendly, helpful, and chatty.
However, and this is a huge however, the last time I went, it was a disappointing and frustrating experience. My husband and I were craving the mentioned sandwich, so we drove a long way to get one. When we arrived (it was closer to closing time, but there was still plenty of time to get something to go before they closed), the guy that was working intercepted us at the entrance and said they weren't open. I noted that we checked their website before we left, since we drove a long way to get there, and it said they closed at 4. His response was "we closed earlier today, at 3". When I asked why, considering the time noted on their business website, he mumbled "staffing issues". It was a very awkward and unprofessional situation.
To make things worse: We decided to get something next door at Decadent Creations, as a last resort. This is their joint/sister business (under the same owners, from my understanding - I always see employees go back and forth between both places), so we walked a few steps over to the little café. They were also supposed to be open, according to the closing time noted on their website. When I asked for a chicken salad sandwich, the woman behind the counter unapologetically said they were out of bread, so, no big deal, I switched to a biscuit, and she said they were "out of those too". Needless to say, we didn't bother trying to get anything else. It felt like they were just trying to rush us out, as well as the others who were trying to order. We left without getting anything and so did another couple that was behind us.
Back to Collective Market, specifically: I looked around these reviews and it seems others have also been told, on separate occasions, that they decided to close early due to "staffing issues" and couldn't accept their order.
I really like the intended concept of this place, and their bagels and bagel sandwiches are great. I truly hope they soon get better organized and improve their staff training so they can treat clients with a decent level of professionalism. For now, the incident has disappointed us to the point where we don't feel like returning soon.
Had I written this review the last times I visited, I would have given this place 5 stars. I've downgraded that to 2 stars because of today's experience. That said, if I ever decide to give this place another chance, and my experience improves, I will be more than happy to change my review and rating.
Collective Market (and Decadent Creations), you have a great concept going, with great potential....
Read moreI want to love Collective Market. The idea is wonderful, the food can be great when it's done right, and it's a short walk from my house. BUT, since it opened my wife and I have been frequenting this place (3-5 times a month) and I consistently have issues with my order and/or service. From small issues like not cutting my sandwich in half even though I asked when I ordered, to bigger issues like undercooked pancakes, missing items, or forgetting to renew their liquor license, there always seems to be something that's not quite right. I'm all for paying extra for the atmosphere and good ingredients, but I just can't keep spending my money here when the staff has been consistently missing the mark. I had hoped it was just a new business figuring it's stuff out, but it just hasn't gotten better. I want them to succeed, but they need to get someone in there that knows how to run a kitchen, get orders out accurately and in a timely manner, and train their employees to know the menu and how to interact with customers better. I truly hope you get it together before all the new businesses arrive on...
Read moreThis is a weird one for sure but I felt the need to share. My boyfriend and I love coming here. We came here this morning to get salmon bagels. My boyfriend was asking which bagels are the most popular and she recommended the one with poppyseeds. My boyfriend and I have been in recovery for years and live in Oxford housing that does random UAs as a part of the rules for living there. He told her he cant have poppyseeds and chose a different one. (poppyseeds can cause a positive result in urine tests for opiates) We got our order and he didn't realize until halfway through his bagel that she did in fact give him the poppyseeds bagel. Long story short, he got UAd today and popped dirty for opiates because of this flippin bagel. Thankfully they're taking it to a lab to be double tested but this positive result puts his housing at risk over a fricken bagel, so ridiculous. Im going to be calling them tomorrow to explain the situation and will update later. other than that we always have loved coming here just a really strange circumstance from our...
